Thread: Sons of Deceit - Thousand Sons (my first army)

All that magnetising must've taken quite some time but I imagine is well worth it for the ease of painting and transportation as well as the economical benefits to it too.

I'm digging the converted backpacks on the Aspiring Sorcerors and I really like the blue you've used on the armour.

Green stuff work on the termies is a very nice addition, looks really good.

Wow, I have been so busy over the last month. Just a shame I have not been able to spend much time on this

3mmx1.5mm (same size as the terminator arms)

I used these (some good pics of rhino/predator conversion as well):

In some cases that might be true, but mine seem to be really strong and slightly flexible. (Haha, I just had a go at trying to break one).

I must have got lucky with my ratio of blue and yellow mixture, and had the right temperature when they were curing.

Even if they did break, I can always make more

Yeah, it took aaaaaaages. I originally started just with drill bits and twisting them by hand to make holes for the magnets But once I got the hang of it (and bought myself some decent tools ) the process seemed to get quicker. Most of the time spent was dry fitting to make sure the magnets were going in with the right polarity.

From a transport, economic, and hobby perspective, it was very well worth it though

Thanks, I wasn't originally going to do it. So glad I did though, would of been weird having 'bare headed' (so to speak) models within this army

And now for a small (phone camera) update:

First terminator pretty much done, just need to touch up a couple of things - power weapon/power cables/eyes/rear exhaust vents:

I need to learn how to paint power/force weapons

My Pink Horrors (Lesser Daemons) and Defiler have arrived, but I have only assembled one Pink Horror squad so far (can't bear the though of yet more assembled but unpainted models awaiting my brush).

    Test model:

Really happy to paint something other than Enchanted Blue for once, and to be able to experiment with flesh/muscle tones.

One down, 19 to go - layers and layers and layers and layers and layers...

Small boring update. WARNING - slow painter ahead

    Batch painting some trim/bone:

So I finally got around to buying some brown paint to use on the Pink Horrors (my paint collection was brownless till then).

Up until now I had been using a base layer of Dwarf Bronze for all of my gold trim. Was a very slow and messy process, and hard on my brushes. Using Brown is so much easier/quicker

I had a look at a few tutorials on the internet and just adapted them for my needs/ability/equipment.

I wish I had taken some photos of my progress whilst casting, but I didn't think of that at the time

So here are my casts and the heads of some unassembled troops that I used:

First I made the casts. This involved mixing a batch of greenstuff large enough to take the impression of the head. I flattened this into beer bottle tops so that I had a backstop to press against. After it was in place I smoothed the surface by rubbing it with a little water to remove fingerprints/creases etc.

After lubricating the surface of the greenstuff with olive oil (cooking oil), I then pressed the heads into the greenstuff slowly and evenly to get the details that I wanted.

Then left them to cure for about 2 days - with the heads still in the greenstuff so that when I pulled them out they would not pull/snagg/warp the greenstuff.

After pulling the heads out gently, I lubricated the casts with olive oil again and then filled them with fresh greenstuff (a generous amount that will fill the cavity plus a little extra) and left them to cure for about 4 days - I didn't want them too soft just in case the new greenstuff bent out of shape when I removed them (I had already had a bad experience with the Tzeentch symbol on my first scratch built Aspiring Sorcerer).

I then trimmed all of the flash/excess greenstuff off, and because these are only one-sided I had to shave off the back to make them smooth, and thin enough to fit on the Terminators without looking too 'fat'.

    Very easy I reckon.

I don't know if you have casted with greenstuff before and are asking specifically about casting these helms, or are asking because you have not casted at all. So just to cover both eventualities here is a youtube vid which covers ONE way to cast with greenstuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwzJkE2gKhA

I used that method myself, however it's been a few years since I've owned my own lego, so I used beer bottle tops instead

    Hope that helps.

I've been able to get a lot of work done on these guys over the last week or so (by my slow standards), so I'd thought I'd take some (phone camera) pics of the overall army progress to date.

nice work, like the look of the lesser deamons, very fleshy, should go well with the sea of blue that is the thousand sons!

would be good to see a side by side of the horror and the termi sorcerer.

The extra mile with all the magnetizing wasn't sen necessary to make this army awesome. But you did it anyway. Excellent work sir

Hahaha, I was just being a cheap bastard when I bought the magnets and spare bits. I payed dearly in the time of drilling and fitting of said bits though.

Thankyou for saying 'awesome' though, I really want to create an army that looks good and that I can be proud of.

Even if it takes me a long time to complete this, I am still having fun in doing so.

Comments like yours help motivate me to continue/finish what I'm doing, so thank you

Keep it up! We talked the other day about this, try to do maybe an hour of painting here and there, you can't let this army get put on the back burner.

Awesome models like this need to be on the battle field.
