    Empire Terrain Effort

    Hi

I am new here but have been watching and modelling for many years now. I have always been meaning to get a thread started but not got it together until now!

I really like the terrain of the Empire and making my own buildings, the Hirst Arts bricks have come in very handy. I have recently started to play whfb after about 15 years purely collecting and modelling.

I am aiming to make a terrain set for when I can hold my own games, but I'm aiming big. I want to start with a collection of Empire buildings and eventually build enough for a whole city. I will show you some of the previous stuff i have done to give you an idea until i get more pictures up.

    Any suggestions would be helpful.

    Love it!
Great eye for detail and I like empire buildings you could actually live in so carry on.

The top is foamcore with balsa wood and a paper roof?
Could you show a close up from the windows?

    Re: Empire Terrain Effort

Here are the other pictures of the work so far. This is a market place building which will be in the main square of the town I guess. I have usd the fieldstone and ruined fieldstone molds for this one. The flooring uses the small brick mould. The top is removable so models can get inside. I wanted it to be a platform where people may address the town. Balsa has been used and the roof tiles have been laser cut in strips for speed.

The roof is really thick card, about .5 mm with laser cut tiles from the same material. The main frame is black foamboard/core.

Great terrain, looks really professional and is suitably Empire-y ^_^
Looks like a lot of work to get buildings of that quality, I might just have to stick to TabletopWorld and GW terrain for my Marienburg Armies on Parade board.
Hope to see some more great terrain soon!

    Thanks

    Re: Empire Terrain Effort

I wish I could do laser cutting, cutting by hand is such a pain. That should allow for a very reasonable building time for your city, is that how you made the windows as well?

Here is my next piece which is supposed to be a town limits shrine or toilet! It will get some weathering in the painting process. I usually make one piece at a time but with a ton of bricks it's hard to stop building.

Here is some progress on the Empire market place. The photo shows the roof cap which i made out of plasticard. I hope to paint it in a sort of verdigris lead/copper colour. I am thinking of putting a wind vane on the top as it is in the centre of the town.

Very impressive. As someone who also hopes to build an entire town of "empire" inspired buildings I am looking forward to seeing what else you produce. :-)

    Re: Empire Terrain Effort

I have now put on some cardboard ridge strips on the marketplace and stuck on the roof cap. A mixture of PVA and superglue works a treat for this job. I have also added a little plaque to the front of the building.

The second picture shows my first tall town house. I imagine this one would be in the better end of the city because it is neat and will have a lot more detailing to it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Another building here. As you can see this one is narrow with a little balcony at the top.

Little bit of painting here. What colour should I do the walls? Bleached bone type effect or more of a washed out terracotta?

    Re: Empire Terrain Effort

Wow these are awesome, are they just for battles of Warhammer or are you planning to do some ruined ones for some Mordheim as well?

As for your latest building, I think a light bone or even grey-ish stone colour work work well against the red roof and wood. I think if you did it terracotta it may end up looking a bit too warm as a building.

    Re: Empire Terrain Effort

Check out some real buildings and go by that, google is your friend.

I am all for the old style yellowed bleached bone but terracotta would be a more modern aproach.

EDIT: go BB for a coherent look with your other buildings.

You know it is totally up to you on colors, but I'm with Little Joe in thinking you want coherency. Not necessarily uniform, but you don't want one building to look out of place

No plans for mordheim as I have never indulged. I think the bone colour will be more in keeping. Cheers all.
