Thread: Kings of War for Battlescribe (free army building software)

Re: Kings of War for Battlescribe (free army building software)

I'm running Windows XP. The error occurred while trying to create an army list. Battlescribe seemed to load OK but I'm not sure if KoW loaded OK as it crashed before it let me.

I'll keep trying! Bloomin' computers.... :S

You've not installed it in under Program Files have you? It could be crashing as it doesn't have permissions to create a file.

Battlescribe looks promising. Is there a way to preview an item without adding it to your list? I'd like to see some of the details like points costs etc.

@Osbad - Only major thing I can advise is to download the latest version of the Java JRE and see if that fixes it. With an XP install you've probably got a very old version of Java on there.

If that doesn't work you could also try the "Windows Setup" version of battlescribe from http://battlescribe.net/, see if it plays nicer with XP. Also, right click > run as administrator can also randomly help on things that don't want to work.

The only way to confirm that it's definitely my files causing the problem is to grab some files for other game systems from another site and seeing if those work okay. If someone else's files do work, then it's definitely an issue with mine.

I couldn't get the zip file to download at all from earlier in the thread, but I went to the Battlescribe site, got the Windows download from there, and then used the data file from here... works a dream

That's a good idea. I'll ask the developer if it's something he might consider. In the mean time there's not a lot I can do... if I add the points value in brackets to the unit names it will also appear in the final roster printout.

Edit: also.. Warpath Forgefathers added. Hit update to grab the list.

Re: Kings of War for Battlescribe (free army building software)

I just tried using the BattleScribe App on an Android phone and I get an exception/error when trying to update from the dropbox link in the first post.

"Could not update one or more files. There may be a problem with the repository. Failed files: Abyssal Dwars, Dwarfs, Elves, ... , Warpath".

Updating works fine when I try it on the PC (using the same repository).

Any idea what I'm doing wrong here? I guess I did not read the help text properly?

Re: Kings of War for Battlescribe (free army building software)

I have no idea, but if works on the PC without any problems, then that's a bug with battlescribe, not my repository.

Or it may be that your particular phone does not allow downloads or some other thing. I can't offer any sort of help with that because I don't have a smartphone.

A work-around could be to simply copy the files over to your phone manually, if that is possible. Again, I have no idea if it is or not.

I haven't made any updates recently anyway, so you shouldn't need to update, you're not missing out on anything until the new lists come out (which I will be doing as one big update as soon as the 8 lists are all out.. and also repackaging as a download containing all the lists so you can just grab that instead of updating if you prefer).

Warpath files need a rework because I was too eager to impliment the alpha, and now that the beta changed every single unit's profile, it needs scrapping and redoing. I might decide to wait for the full release rather than doing the beta then seeing it change again from beta to final.

One final thing that it could be is that battlescribe is now version 11-point-something (probably the version you have on your phone) and my files were written in 10-point-something and the developer might have made some tiny little change that requires me to recompile everything.

EDIT: Yes, it's a problem with 11-point-something of battlescribe not recognising my older files.

I remade the index file, try it again, let me know if it works.

However, now that I've fixed it to work with version 11, there is a very high chance that I've just broken it for version 10 users...

Edit 2: Yep, the index is now buggered for anyone using version 10. Update battlescribe if you have any problems, that will fix them. There really is no rush though, no updates or fixes to my files have been made in the last several months, you're not missing out on anything until all of the new KoW lists have been released.

Re: Kings of War for Battlescribe (free army building software)

Yes. But there aren't any updates anyway, so no worries. I removed the Warpath alpha lists for now. Update your PC version to version 11, from the battlescribe site. That will work no problem.

Also, update your mobile version, with the latest version from the battlescribe site, then test again.

As for the mobile version not working, do you definitely have version 11.11.01b, there was a bug with version 11.11.0 that broke everything, then 11.11.01 was released which fixed it.

Unfortunately there is not a stable and current version of battlescribe currently available for download, since the dev has replaced it with another new beta release which may also be broken.

EDIT: *sigh* battlescribe updating is currently broken. Again. It's a problem with the software, the developer released an all-new format, which was buggy, and then got fixed, and then he added some new thing which looks to also be buggy and.. to hell with this, it's sunny outside, this is one of my few days off this month, and updating will have to stay broken until I make a new release at the end of this month. It's not essential, because there is nothing *to* update.

The error code isn't any use to me. I need to know what version you are currently running.

EDIT: *sigh* battlescribe updating is currently broken. Again. It's a problem with the software, the developer released an all-new format for the files to shave a few seconds off of the download time for mobile users, which was buggy, and then got fixed, and then he added some new thing which looks to also be buggy and.. to hell with this, it's sunny outside, this is one of my few days off this month, and updating will have to stay broken until the new release at the end of this month. Download the .zip in the first post for access to a fully-working version with zero bugs that will unfortunately not work on android.
On the phone I'm running BattleScribe v1.11.01b (downloaded via the Android Market).

I'llk try to update the PC version now...

Btw, what are the file names of the repository files? I'll try to copy them to the phone.

You need to download the ressource files from the mentioned (currently not working) repository.

Don't download betas, as a general rule... they are full of bugs.

Anyway, here are the files. Copy the .gst file to your gamesystem folder, and the .cat files to your catalogues folder.

If those folders actually exist on an android phone, that is. I have no idea, I don't own one. This is just assuming the android version works the same way as the pc version.

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/27484619/gam...20of%20War.gst

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/27484619/catalogues/Undead.cat

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/27484619/catalogues/Dwarfs.cat

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/27484619/catalogues/Orcs.cat

My hands are really tied with this one, even if I do try and fix it I can't personally test it or have any sort of clue about what might be going wrong. It could be a setting on your phone for all I know.

Re: Kings of War for Battlescribe (free army building software)

As far as I ccan see you can't really choose the version you want to download via the Android Market, you always seem to get the latest version available. I may be wrong with this, though.

I copied the files to the corresponding folders of the phone:

    *.gst files:
    /sdcard/BattleScribe/gamesystems

    *.cat
    /sdcard/BattleScribe/catalogues

The mobile version is working now, thanks a lot.

Okay, I got the battlescribe developer to download my repository on his Android phone and he also got an error, which he'll try to fix tomorrow. It's definitely a bug with the latest version of battlescribe since the repository works fine on the PC.

I guess Android auto-downloads the latest version. Works great if that version is stable, but is not good if it isn't.

There was a major change to the structure of the XML files this time around so the update to 11 is unavoidable.

OK looks like I've figured out the error with this repository. I need to do a little more testing, but I should hopefully have the new version (desktop and Android) out during the week.

Downloaded this to make an Orc list last night. Had to use the Windws download option from the site as the file set on its own got the same errors others have seen.

Simple to use. Good work guys.

Yeah, that pre-packaged .zip is old and seems to not work anyway, so I've removed it from the first post. It was created before data repositories existed, to make things easier.. now that repositories do exist, it's somewhat redundant. Recommend the windows .exe for installs, it is the simplest install process and keeps everything neatly in the same folder.

When I release the new army lists, everyone will have to update their version of Battlescribe to the latest version. The new version will have a cool hover-to-preview unit stats function that I've had people ask for on the mantic fanatics and the official mantic forum... I asked Jon if it would be possible for him to add the feature, and it was, so odds are you'll be wanting to update to get your hands on that feature anyway.

Re: Kings of War for Battlescribe (free army building software)

@mattjgilbert I'm glad to hear the newer version worked better

Sorry to everyone who's had problems with scarletsquig's zip file. It's my fault that some bugs got in there. If anyone has problems please do let me know on the BattleScribe forums or Twitter, and I can take a look asap. I'll usually get a fixed version out after a few days once I'm aware of a bug.

I say this because poor scarletsquig has been tearing his hair out trying to sort out the errors, and I feel like he shouldn't have to (sorry for that dude). The sooner I find out about a bug, the quicker I can sort it out. I didn't realise the problems people were having here until a couple of days ago. Essentially, bugs and issues are my problem to deal with

I'd definitely recommend keeping an eye on the BattleScribe website/blog/twitter for new versions, and staying up to date. BattleScribe is still beta because there is still the odd bug, and new features to be added. I try to get a new version out every month-ish, and often these releases solve problems people were having.

One last thing to note, BattleScribe is backwards compatible with it's older file formats, but it may well have problems with files from newer versions than you have installed. This means v1.10 files will work in v1.11, but not the other way around.

    Hope this helps
