The Sons of Ioneth: Mantic Undead

About two months ago, I purchased mantic's undead army set and assembled them. There they were, pride of place on my desk, waiting to be painted. And so they remained...

So after kicking myself into gear, I decided to give my poor neglected (and eternally damned) souls some much deserved attention. So without further ado, I present the cursed souls of Ioneth

The province of Ioneth was governed by Baron Artur, a just and noble lord who managed a prosperous land. Whilst it would be untrue to say he was loved by his people, he did not receive the same bitter snipes and organic projectiles that other men of his status did.

In the mountains nearby lay the Dwarf realm of Karak Drunk . The Baron was on very good terms with King Beerdy, even despite the rumours surrounding the Dwarf noble... *
The two realms entered a mutually benficial trade agreement, in which the Dwarfs provided metal and engineering advice for beer, lots and lots of beer.

One day, the Baron was called out to war, leaving his three sons in charge. Unfortunately, having been spoiled by the life of nobility, the sons were incredibly mischefious, and numerous pranks on the perpetually inerbirated Dwarfs caused the relationship to sour. It wasn't long before this mischief was taken too far.

In the dead of night, the three brothers crept into the Dwarfs' mountain hold and set about stealing that which every Dwarf holds dearly in their hearts. The trusty axe.

The next morning, the brothers woke up to an angry knock upon the door of their hall. Upon opening, they looked down into a wall of helmet and beard. The small amount of face visible between each unit of metal and hair spoke daggers. It was then that the brothers made their worst mistake.

The sons attempted to sell the stolen axes back to the Dwarfs.

Luckily, they managed to escape the ensuing violence, and watched from a hilltop as the Dwarfs took their revenge on the province of Ioneth. They watched in despair as the Baron's soldiers were defeated by the rage of the Dwarfs, they cried in shame as the peasantry took up arms in defense of their homes only to be struck down, and they Wailed in agony as the entire brewery was carried off by the triumphant invaders.

The three brothers returned to their stricken domain. The crops were razed, the population had been massacared, and the Baron's dining hall was completely trashed. The sons began to panic, their father would be furious to find his land in a state like this! It was time for another plan.

The first job was to tidy the hall. Then they set about re-sowing the crops. Only one (fairly substantial) issue remained; the mountain of corpses. A solution presented itself, and the brothers felt relieved. They were going to try necromancy, and hope that father wouldn't notice....

*My friend will be collecting a Mantic Dwarf force. He has come up with a brilliant backstory in which the overly drunken king of his clan takes things too far and wakes up next to a female ogre.... but more of that some other time

Before I talk about the rest of the army, I'd like to share my necromancer miniatures. This was an exercise to see what kind of conversions were possible with mantic miniatures. So without further ado, I present the three brothers, Pek, Ek and Sett:

Sett, the youngest of the three learned how to raise the dead. His hobbies inlclude flexing and generally being a lecherous crone

Pek, the middle child, was charged with maintaining the undead, ensuring that they remain shambling around doing as they should.

Ek, oldest of the three and general ringleader. An aspiring commander and failed drama student, he is often seen on the battlefield ordering his soldiers forward and making flamboyant gestures accompanied by cheesy catchphrases which cause his subordinates to groan in embarrasment.

And now the rest of the army. I apologize for the quality of the photos, but the lighting conditions were poor. I will provide better pictures at some point

The Baron's soldiery, lead by Captain Gywain. Undeath did not phase them at all, and they continue to fight with the same gung-ho attitude they did before.

Annoyingly, I sprayed the banner bearer too closely, so he had to be replaced. This is supposed to be a phalanx horde, and I will gradually be replacing the remaining handweapons with spears when I can be bothered.

The Baron's personal guard, lead by Commander Lance Sparingly. Stoic and Silent, very little has changed since their reincarnation.

All in various stages of WIP.

    Zombies & Ghouls
The peasantry. These poor souls can still be found going about daily life as usual.
Unfortunatley, when casting the reincarnation, the brothers were unable to filter just who was raised... so some of the ancient Ionethites have been raised aswell. Decomposed and disdainful of the attitude of young whipersnappers these days. The brothers saw fit to round them up and keep them penned in lest they irritate the population too much.

I've assembled all of the ghouls and zombies, but I don't really have much to show for them. The zombies are awaiting little conversions to make them into grumpy looking ancestors (think bags of sweets and zimmer frames) But here is my homemade ghast:

And there we have it, my first stab at building a kings of war army. Updates will only be of painting for now, but expect more conversions and fluff in future.

    >>>A very nice start. Thats also a good look you've got with your three necromancers, very neat indeed. I recently bought some mantic skeletons to add to my TK army, but i really hadn't thought about chaning them up to much (other then doing some shield modifications).

Can't wait to see more, especially those necromancers all painted'up!

Very nice, good painting and i really like the necromancers with no/ethereal heads.

Funnily enough when I kitbashed/sculpted Sauron as the necromancer for a lotr army the concept was near identical to your necromancers, bodies but without a head.

Re: The Sons of Ioneth: Mantic Undead

While I prefer Necromancers to look like old sorcerer dudes (or skeletons), I really like those conversions you did. It may be a little lame of my mind to work like that but they (especially Sett) really remind me of the mages from Magicka. Also like the Ghast a lot. Looking forward to seeing more!

Looking good, really like the necromancer conversions.

Ghouls with the revenant armour are an interesting idea as well.
If you play any of Mantic's games, check out my Battlescribe project for KoW and Warpath.

Re: The Sons of Ioneth: Mantic Undead

Thanks for the comments I'm glad the necromancers are being well received

Firstly I've tried to get a better idea of the painting on the skeletons, but the Lovely welsh weather has meant that I've had to resort to yellow bulbs as a light source once again so the colour are looking very washed out. You may also notice that the commander and musician suffered a similar fate to the standard bearer and have had some of the detail obscured by the close spraying.

And work has begun on one of the necromancers

    Excellent start.

Those necromancers are just like the idea I had in my head for my own, but since I found some ringwraith models I'll probably use them.

Where in north Wales are you pal?

In the middle of the wilds of meirionydd

Well things are getting a bit busy around here so only a small update on the painting of the necromancer. This is my first attempt at lighting effects and whilst I'm not completely happy with it I'm satisfied for now.

I laughed at the background text - sadly rare to see humour used in an undead force.

Bah! If only I could exist purely as a warseer-bound entity, things would be so much simpler.

Thanks I drew inspiration from a passage in the vampire counts book a couple of editions back. The only line I can remember now is "Alath Mathter, hith head fell off".

Anyway, on to the miniatures! Not a lot done unfortunately, but I hope to have some ghouls and another necromancer done and uploaded by tonight!

William, the drama teacher, hasn't been out of character for many years. He is to blame for the many excruciating performances (and resultant alcoholism epidemic) starring his worst student, Ek

Nearly done, some detail remain to be filled.

poorly lit wip zombie test scheme. Max brooks' description of zombies with grey skin and black blood really captivated me, so i'm applying it to my zombies.

Two ancestor conversions. I'm worried these may be the equivelent to blasphemy when it comes to mantic's lovely zombie models.

Mini update: Work on the necromancer and a raised skeleton!

Expect more regular updates from now on... but that isn't a promise
