    The Addams go to Malifaux!

    Hey all

So awhile back, me and Mrs Addams got into Malifaux. I say got into, we got two starter sets, perved over the book, and never did anything with it. However in an effort to move away from GW games, we've decided to have a proper crack at it. That and Sigurs awesome paint jobs.

First up are my first crews..

I do have lady justice but I was half way through painting her when I got a bit fed up so I'll be starting her again. I really like the Perdita model and its why my first crew is a Guild one. The Death Marshals and judge were a pig to put together, but with the addition of some fenris games resin bases they look spiffy!
I'm not entirely sure what to do with the spare coffins though...

I'll probably be adding to these soon as there are some rather awesome models that have come out since we bought our first models - the Lucius box set and some guild guard I think.

I knew I had to have these as soon as I saw them - absolutely lovely sculpts, and I got them at a bargain price so I'm happy. Still need to add the scythe to Cassandra though. Bases once again from Fenris, and I'll probably be adding the coryphee and the mechanical doves .

Painting pics should follow sometime next week, and pics of Mrs Addams first crew.

The main problem with Malifaux however, is that its all so damn pretty

    Ain't that the truth.
Without even having played a game I have so far amassed eight and a half different crews.
But then I tend to have a similar problem with any game I pick up.

    EMPEROR NORTON - Cheers bud

Well.. I'm making a complete hash of these..

I think the change in scale and slender nature of the figures is throwing me off a bit. Never the less, I will plough on. I'm hoping to get her finished this weekend and move onto one of the showgirls if all goes well.

Morticia has hers built now so expect some kind of update from her soon, and I'm currently wrangling a trade for another starter set to gives us more variety.

And for those who have a crew sat somewhere but haven't started painting it yet, why not join the tale of skirmish painters? - its only 1 models a month... go on...

You'll get the hang of it. Just enjoy the learning curve. Besides, she looks pretty awesome to me already.

Re: The Addams go to Malifaux!

mdiscala - Thing is, the paints gotten quite thick on Perdita with my constant attempts at correction and I reckon after finishing lady J I should be able to get her painted a lot better.

maddoctor - Indeed they are, and they'll probably pop up here sooner rather then later

lilloser2010 - Its more a case of getting your head around completely different minis. I'll be the first to admit I've gotten a bit lazy with my painting, so switching to detailed fantasy minis was never going to be smooth, but tonight has been fun.

So first up, the nearly finished Lady J

I don't know why theres lots of purple, but there you go. The skin needs a fair bit of work but my skin painting recently has been horrid for some reason, and at a distance it looks okay so I'm not going to fret over it. The hair is electric purple - I painted GW purple ink over VMC Violet and it rocks. Very manga.

I didn't have any white spray so after a bit of a think, I airbrushed on VMC Black, which was a first for me. I did use to use black primer a lot but about three years ago I switched to white - I think for the death marshalls and the darker figures from Wyrd I'll be sticking with black. I also painted the model on a cork rather then on the base which again, is a first for me. It encouraged me to be a bit gentler with the figure.

Its not the cleanest or prettiest of jobs, but I'm really happy with it - thoughts and opinions on her would be appreciated, and I'll try and get more shots tomrrow during the day.

Last night me and Mrs Addams had our first game of Malifaux

We only managed two turns as we were both pretty tired and it was our first go at the rules, however it had us chuckling throughout at all the nasty little tricks you can pull off and how you feel engaged throughout. In the pic you can see my death marshals about to get a pounding - they simply couldn't damage those damn belles! I think if we had gone much further Mrs Addams would have kicked my behind. Aside from knowing the rules better, her crew is a lot more effective up close where as I was relying on shooting.

The rules aren't as complicated as it looks, and I think the wording could be a little better. Getting your head away from using dice and into cards is a big transition, but it works better and having the ability to cheat fate is a real advantage. It also feels like the kind of game where the more you put into it, the more you'd get out of it. Things like terrain and campaigns seem a lot more important and relevant, whilst crushing your opponent is relatively pointless if your objects don't tell you too.

After the game we spent a fair amount of time realising how cool some of the options are in the rulebook. Models like the executioner (which I never rated before) are now awesome, whilst the Ronin play exactly how you'd want them to (with the classic dash strike and seppuku!).

I'll going to pester Mrs Addams for a game this week - I haven't spent all night painting Lady J for her to sit and look pretty

Lady J looks really good, dare I say much better then the Cowgirl?

I think the inks have really made a difference.

The skin looks really good on Lady J. I don't even know if it looks like you did crazy shading and highlighting or anything. I think you just got a real smooth paint application on her in that picture. Regardless of technique, Looks like alabaster. Well I'm off to cruise bars for goth chicks...

MADDOCTOR - Very much so. I don't think it'd look the same by a long shot if I hadn't busted those out.

Keravin - apart from the dodgy arms on the death marshals, and the fragility of the belles there beautiful models. I think I'll be picking up a second lady J to do in alternate scheme as its such a nice model.

    mdiscala - Sigged

Brief update from me. Mrs Addams is ploughing through Seamus quite quickly so expect an update from her within the next few days.

Going to add some florescent paint to the blye next just to give it a bit more ping. Very very happy with how well it turned out considering I did all that blue with the airbrush (and I've never done it before). Thing is now, how should I do the coffin??

Tuesday night is now Malifaux night in the Addams household, so expect to see a proper battle report tomorrow which I will once again have parts of my rear handed to me.

Re: The Addams go to Malifaux!

    Short update from me

Lost steam on this guy. Need to do the pistol and the face a bit more but I think I'll do that when I do the other two so I can get proper cohesion. I should really have painted the coffin before the lighting effects as well but hey, you live and learn.

Next up on the block from left to right we have a performer and mannequin, a Freikorps Librarian (which will be my first months painting for the tale of skirmish painters), a converted Perry samurai to be a female ronin, and a death marshal.

I'm hoping to finish the conversion work on the ronin tomorrow and get the freikorp sanded if I get time. I'll be starting the showgirls from scratch with a bit of nifty airbrush work.

And some pics of this weeks game

A no score draw sadly. I drew reconnaissance and Morticia drew Slaughter. Lady Justice flew up the centre cutting down everything that got in her way while Seamus made everything in his path insignificant (literally). Lots of fun was had by all, and I'll edit this with more details tomorrow when I'm not so knackered

Yep, definately getting some of that when it comes out. It'll save us a lot of space and hopefully they'll do more sets.

Minor update - did some more work on the ronin

Needs more hair and shes a little bit wonky, but hey, not bad for a model that was originally destined for the bin.

Re: The Addams go to Malifaux!

Thanks for the comments guys Brief update from me. Random figure from the big box of bits.

I'm going to use him as Hans, as I don't particularly like the Wyrd version (far too techy).I'm thinking of adding some kind of freehand around the bottom - some kind of celtic knot as I'm feeling a little brave. I've gone with green as thats the color I think I'm going to paint my Freikorps, however he doesn't look too out of place next to Lady J which is handy.

I've also managed to nab on the cheap a lucius box set and two extra guild guard. No Ryle though, but I never liked that miniature so not too bad but I'm really stuck on how to paint them. I think I might end up having a zorro session at some point.

I'm also thinking (and this applies to the freikorps as well) of having a crack at monochrome. Theres a decent tutorial on mini painter and I think it'd look very atmospheric but I'm still chewing it over. I think partly why I'm stuck is the fact that I've picked up the two starters most resembling a real military force... the thing I was trying to move away from... bugger.

Sorry for the general lack of updates. Had a rather nasty letter through from the letting agents so I've spent most of the last week doing house things. The above should be finished this week as he's coming along quite nicely.

Tiny update from me as he's moved on slightly - decided to call him Gruber

Absolutely love this figure. Its an absolute joy to paint - the whole things taken less then an hour so far. Don't be surprised if I paint up another couple (one for each faction... maybe).

Going to have a crack at more freehand tomorrow along the trim.
