Re: The Addams go to Malifaux!

    Hello Adams family,
I have recently joined Warseer (tale of fantasy painters). Right now I'm hopping around on the forums looking for great logs to read.

Gomez's avatar caught my attention (Addams family movies are in my top 10 favorite movies). So now, on this rainy sunday, I've read all three logs. Compliments for the quality of your models and entertaining fluff. Your testing of different games is very interesting. Looking forward for more news.

A special hello to Morticia. I don't understand why everybody thinks this is a hobby for males only. We girls usually have a better eye for details and better taste in colour combinations. Please keep posting.

    EDIT: Yay replies!

Welcome to warseer! And glad to see another lady wargamer on the boards (Morticia says hi). I have to agree about the eye for detail, as Morticia will spend hours perfecting a model where as I'm happier to crack on and get it finished. Thank you for reading all the blogs by the way (I have another one for Relics knocking around in the random project logs bit, plug plug).

Have you tried Jihad Ragsta's log yet - thats rather good for fluff and modelling goodness, so I've heard

I'm really happy with the flesh tones. I want to add some more definition to the folds but I love the color so far. I'd like to add some other spots of color to him as well as I think he's a little too bland at the moment even with the fabulous mask -

Wow! The latest is just wow!! I love the skin tones and his mask. I have no idea what this brute is but I love him! If you want some colour try some small spots of blood on those dismembered hands and a few more on his blades (fraggin awesome blades! *head explodes*). I think he looks quite nice keeping things limited - you could go crazy on his base though - that would make a nice contrast.

The Freikorps is well done. I don't know how I feel about the colour choices though... I don't know the fluff behind them but something doesn't feel right about it. The green cloth - that might have looked cool painted like leather or a deeper red.

Great horned owl - welcome to Warseer! Why the heck does Gomez manage to attract women to HIS logs? :P

I agree a tattoo would be nice. But if I were Gomez I would be afraid to ruin that perfect skin. Difficult choice to make.

That is a fabulous mask. I'd probably keep him as he is and let the pattern around the eyes be the only complicated part.

Re: The Addams go to Malifaux!

    Yay lots of lovely comments

JIHAD - He's a Malifaux executioner... you know Malifaux? That game I'm going to get you into? Mwahaha. I'm really stuck for the base at the moment. I've been coping out on the Malifaux bits and using some very nice resin bases from Fenris but I have nothing in 40mm... ideas?
As for the Freikorps, see below..
And about the blood... hes got ******* huge claws! Of course he's having blood!

JORMI - I've been doing a lot of tattoos recently it seems. Plus that big belly seems a bit too obvious for tattoo work. That and the mighty Sigur did some awesome belly tattoo work on him. I'm tempted to give him something on the arm though.

GREAT HORNED OWL - I'll just have to get another and stick a tattoo on that one instead I'm glad you like the skin though. I still think it could do with a little more work, as he's turned out a lot more healthy then I originally planned. I was planning to add veins and stretch marks, but.. next time. I'm quite like to do one hefting a massive axe or a scythe.

MDISCALA - Hows things? I do tend to agree with keeping it simple but... you've read my plogs. I'm always fiddling and changing things :P

Right, regarding the Freikorpsmann. I've emailed Lilloser who knows about color theory and good painting and all that noise and sort his advice. Turns out the reason people are a bit marmite over him is that he's painted in discordant colors (think, the joker from Batman) - some people just like discord :P He'll be getting a slight repaint to make him a bit easier on the eyes.

For now though, more work on Russell.

Not so happy with the Verdi gris as it seems a bit too muted. Going to play around with that a little more. Belly hair is... okay. It needs shaping a bit more on the right and around his.. erm.. chest. I think I may have gone a little too dark, but it looks okay for a first attempt I think.

Anyway I decided it was far too long since I posted up something new so...

Some Black Scorpion lady pirates (piratettes, Piratesses, whatever) on Kerr&King bases. Not particularly amazing models but good for the price. Clean up was... interesting. Nice soft metal to work with, but horrendous castings. I'm going to put it down to luck though, as I did get them for nothing. There going to be used as an NPC faction for a campaign I'm writing. The bases are actually a miscast set. I have two other sets from them here which are absolutely stunning.

Should have the executioner finished tomorrow as most of the blacks done. Current schedule* is:

    - Finish executioner
    - Ramos
    - Perdita aka GomezBane
    - Creepy crouchy death marshal
    - Mrs Hamelin
    - Cat swarms for Mrs Hamelin

And amongst all that I'll be painting a Peacekeeper, the rest of the Freikorps, and some pirate lasses (missed that one).

Re: The Addams go to Malifaux!

    Finally! Shes done!

Shes a pain in the rear to paint, but I want to paint another. The overall job was fairly quick, but I kept having problems - the paint started to rub off the hat, I had splodges of brown on the skin, the sheer effect on the shirt didnt work, the pin in the base broke twice and meant I had to use a completely different base...yes, more problems then I want to think about, but shes finished and I'm pleased enough.

I have a feeling that to get the sheer effect to work, I'd need to add the nipples, but that if I get the nipples wrong she'd look ridiculous. I'll sleep on it. I'd also like to do something with that hat but again, after today, I'll sleep on it.

No progress on the executioner tonight - Perdita had all my time

She looks good by the way! I think this is a good example of perseverance being key when painting and modelling - when I was younger I would give up and actually BIN models!! I regret those days... This is a nice piece.

Re: The Addams go to Malifaux!

she's the best piece in this log so far. sheer effect looks good for would naturally be thick cotton - almost denim. you wouldn't get much nipple through that, but you'd get a faint skin tone if the fabrics tight.

leave her alone for a bit.

like the belly hair and chest hair - it just seems a little manicured at the moment. too much of a clean line from hair to no hair.

Re: The Addams go to Malifaux!

JIHAD - Dirty bugger Hmmm.. I'll add her to the list.
She does look alright on reflection, but I think part of that's because I've not done anything fancy which has become a bit of a habbit recently. Everything I've done recently has either had freehand or been a bit out there so keeping it simple and doing it well is probably whats thrown me off about it.

MADDOCTOR - Nice to hear from you, hows things? Thank you very much I agree with you about the shirt, I hadn't thought of it as cotton having seen someone paint it like silk (I'd still like to have another crack at that).
With the Executioner I'm not too sure. Had an ex- eavy metal painter tell me that it looks fine, as some men have shaped hair, and seeing as though hes the guy that sculpted the figure in the first place I'll leave it be for now

Anyway, another work in progress. I tried to go three for three (three days, three figures) but I didn't start him early enough.

Bit too mad on the shading.. I'll have a proper play tomorrow. He is a nice model to paint though, and I'm really happy with the muted colors. I am, as ever, tempted to break it up with something. Maybe some kind of pattern on the collar or OSL eyes.. that could be funky. He'll be a proxy for Ramos.

Lunchbreak, time for a reaction (trying to keep the butter and cheese away from the Ipad).
Good addition to the executioner. Better than a tattoo.
Looking forward to see the pirates painted.
Don't expect comment from me about painting boobs. I don't want to talk about it. PFFF.... Men....hopeless...
The priest looks good. I think the eyes and hair colour can lighten the look. Or you could make the lowest robe a lighter shade, mayby tan or cream.

GREAT HORNED OWL - Thanks very much
And don't be so harsh on the men. Morticia has far more female models then male in her collection. Theres usually a lot more movement and detail on a female model then on a male one. Really its the sculptors fault :P
I'll chew over the lighter robe idea. I want him to be a bit... dingy.

Sorry for the bloody awful pic. My long serving camera chose tonight to die a death - it must have know how happy I was with the face. Blasted thing.

Blacks not bad either. I'm good at this painting lark
Should have him based and finished tomorrow. Will try and come up with a solution to the picture problem..

just so you know - after what i said about the cotton i had to go off and do a bit of research - I was right - even a thin white cotton wouldn't show any detail unless the colour contrast is really really hig

Re: The Addams go to Malifaux!

The executioner looks great, very nice skin tone. With a belly that big, I'd expect to see stretch marks; that may be something to look into if you want to add a bit more depth to the model. I'd also add a little bit more shading around the belly to empahise its shape. Mix a little green into the mid tone and try shading the belly (green being a cold colour to contrast with the slightly rosier skin tone).

Try and find as many fat guys as you can and ask them to take their shirts off. I remember sketching a rather fat man in a life class and his skin was amazing in a horrible way. It had all kind of pock marks, purple mottled crevices and veins. May be worth researching if your inclined to do any more work on the big fella.

How is the freikorpsman? Any updates?

Re: The Addams go to Malifaux!

I think it is strange that it is considered normal for guys to talk about girls tops that way. Would it be just as normal if Morticia and I chatted about bulking out a models pants in a certain area? Maybe I'm prudish.

What a bummer that your camera broke down. I have got more than one. Photography is one of my other (too many) hobbies. For the pictures I take for the Tale I use a Sony Alpha with a macro converter I made myself. (well, with help from my brother). Macro lenses are very expensive and this work pretty good.
