Boogeymen; Renegades (I shouldn't be doing this)

    -Boogeymen Inc.-

The Boogeymen have been a criminal organization as long as they have existed. In their early days much of the business revolved around illicit smuggling, narcotics trafficking, and assassination contracts. They never operated out of any location for long, and a complex system of coding combined with stoic secrecy within the organization meant much of their activity was never directly attributed to them. This allowed them to avoid the wrath of the planetary governments who floundered around multiple sectors in search of them. Over time, their success in concealing their business ventures allowed them to gain a large amount of wealth. With a bountiful resource base at their disposal the Boogeymen began to evolve into the military threat they are today.
Warfare has become a commercial interest for the Boogeymen. Manpower and resources are rarely wasted on forlorn ventures as great emphasis is placed on ‘making a profit’. ‘Profit’ comes in the form of post-combat salvage and the capture of survivors for ‘repurposing’. Technological artifacts are a focus of the Boogeymen who use such finds to maintain their special arrangements with the Dark Magos who work with them. This partnership has resulted in the creation of such monstrosities as the ‘Shamblers’, mindless flesh automatons used to supplement the Boogeymen’s mercenary forces.

The mercenary arm of the Boogeymen is made up of contract criminals. Many of these men are wanted for trial in more than one system. They are survivalist of the lowest kind; hive-gangers, thieves, hit-men, and murderers. The most ‘stable’ of these men are scouted out by Boogeymen ‘recruiters’ and offered service contracts. The organization equips them with military grade weaponry and then turns them loose. They receive payment in the form of whatever they can pillage, plunder, and carry from the battlefield. The Boogeymen also draw in a great number of abhuman recruits whom they welcome openly. Along with the more familiar Ogryns and Rattlings, more peculiar specimens like the cave-dwelling Unterkin have contracts with the mercenaries. These auxiliary units are invaluable assets as they are naturally capable of fulfilling battlefield roles and will often fight for food.

Although they are vigorously pursued by the Ordo Hereticus, the Boogeymen do not consider themselves ‘servants of Chaos’ in the classical sense. Their motivations are entirely based on maintaining their ‘business’. That said, the enigmatic leadership of the organization obviously has no qualms with their ‘employees’ worshipping the dark powers, especially if it leads to the potential for more profits in the immediate future. ‘Gifted employees’ are considered a commodity, and their unnatural abilities make them valuable assets within the criminal enterprise.

On the battlefield, the Boogeymen have proven to be a challenging opponent. They often employ hit-and-run attacks combined with feints and false-retreats to keep an engagement on their terms. Many fool-hardy commanders have pursued a fleeing squad of mercenaries, only to be utterly obliterated upon entering a carefully planned kill-box. A typical Boogeymen raiding party consists largely of well-equipped infantry supported by light armored elements. Tanks are uncommon but will be deployed when a mission requires the extra firepower only steel treads can carry. Most of their heavy armor takes the form of mobile artillery elements, as they possess enormous destructive potential without the need to directly engage an enemy. Ultimately, a Boogeymen force will be tailored towards their specific mission as they rarely engage in prolonged operations.

The Boogeymen have become increasingly organized since establishing their fortress on Apotheos VII. The planet lies within the outer arm of large, eternally brooding warpstorm that dominates the Apotheos sector. This location deters all but the most hardened or insane, providing a perfect staging point for Boogeymen ‘commercial ventures’. Neighboring systems are plagued by raids from these masked madmen and shipping lanes suffer from constant piracy. They often act as mercenary auxiliaries for other traitor factions, even fallen Astartes legions. That said, their motives are always internal and they only fight as long as things seem ‘profitable’.

    -----------------------------------------------------

Well, I'm doing something I swore I wouldn't do, start a plog before I finished my CSM. Unfortunately, the large amount of awesome and inspiring renegade militia stuff I have been looking at has caused me to go on a minor tangent. Hey, at least it is still chaos.

Here is were all this begins.

This is my WIP first platoon command squad. From left to right: rocket launcher team (second member is the headless/armelss dude), platoon leader, grenade launcher, and vox.

A close up of the leader and the rocket launcher. Great increase in photo quality when two are in the field of view.

And a close up of the grenade launcher and the vox. The vox has the same gas mask look, but his awesome hat is a bit to big.

Re: Boogymen; Renegades (I shouldn't be doing this)

Here are a few mildly converted Steel Legions I'll be using as renegades. The commissar needs a lot more work.

Here is what I had the most fun with so far. Not to say this whole thing hasnt been a blast, but this just came together like I wanted it to. My ogryn.

Still WIP, needs some more on the mask and a hose from his mask to the tank.

Here is where he keeps the loot.

All of this is very WIP, and subject to change. So far I am happy with the look and feel. One last thing, a converted lasgun and auto-gun. Lost a bit of the grip converting the auto, at least it missed my finger. Any opinions on these would be appreciated

Let me know what you guys think

Nice, I really like the guy with the Hat. I would suggest doing a little less with the faces of the Steel legionnaires, as they have gasmasked heads already. Try and go for better backpacks and gear on those guys. All in all the Ogryn is cool, I especially like the Stowage kept on his rear. How did you convert the Lasgun? I really like that look, it reminds me of the old lasguns.

EDIT: You know there are some rulesets that allow you to use Astartes and IG in the same army.

Always good to have more than one project on the go mate! I've been painting Dark Eldar all day in spite of converting Deathwing yesterday!

OT- I really like the ogryns in particular but all the sculpting is lovely. Should be a characterful force. Any thoughts about paint scheme yet?

Re: Boogymen; Renegades (I shouldn't be doing this)

Brother Alexos: I like the legionnaires just the way they are, but I want to get rid of the ski-goggles. I do want to upgrade their gear too, so that is on the agenda.
The lasgun was simple. The long barrel came from an old chimera set (the lasguns that come out the hull). I just cut down the las a bit and glued on the longer barrel.
Where do you find these rules of which you speak?
    Thanks for the input!

twistedmarine: Thanks man, glad you found some inspiration. Glad it is going towards the cause of grandfather nurgle!

Hadriel: I had to give in to the temptation of running two plogs, especially after these ideas started hitting me.
I'm glad you like everything so far. I am trying to make each mini different. As far as color goes I am really far from making any kind of decisions. I want to give them a dark base color that will contrast some spooky glowing eyes.

Okay, small update. I finished the sculpting on Ogryn 1. A little on the wrist and finishing touches to the mask. It is supposed to look tattered, lost some detail with the phone sadly. I'm satisfied, but I know there is room to add to him. Thoughts?

Also started on Ogryn 2. Not much to see yet, but figured it was far enough to show.

Almost done with the platoon command squad. Just finishing the second weapons team member. I've pulled a full squad of legionnaires out of my bits box, and my file is ready to remove some insignia and goggles. Lots of diving and kit bashing to come. What do you guys think?

Re: Boogymen; Renegades (I shouldn't be doing this)

The rules of which I speak come from Imperial armour. The specific one I was talking about was Imperial Armour 9: the Badab war. That, or you could use your Marines as counts-as sisters in a Witch Hunters army, which can be fielded alongside an Imperial Guard army.

I really like what you did with the Ogryn's facemask. At first it looked like you were leaving it like that, but the way you sculpted the nosepiece really strikes me as well-done. I can't wait to see what's next. As a hobbyist that hasn't had much money to buy new models in the last 2 years, I've really had to step up my modelling/ kitbashing and overall converting skills, and this should be an interesting look at some different techniques.

Ogyrn number 2 is just sweet. I love his head. Got ideas running through my brain. Plague ogryns are on the to do list. It's a long list. I've been posting some of my stuff on here, check it out and let me know what ya think.

Seriously mate, I think you have many interesting ideas! I would leave the gas masks from the Steel legion troopers, but the ones with bretonnian helmets and masks, and the ogryns, look pretty good

These guys look suitably grim and ghastly to be dubbed bogeymen. Great green stuff work, they look good. Maybe a tutorial on how you do the gasmasks? Cause they look sweet.
Good start, keep it up, I'll be watching this.

Re: Boogeymen; Renegades (I shouldn't be doing this)

Thank you all for your input and kind words

Brother Alexos: Thanks for the info, I'm going to look into the Badab War book for sure. A counts as list is also a good option.
Glad you like how the face mask turned out. I know how you feel building on a budget. I am working out of my box of bits and sprues accumulated when I still had a disposable income.

twistedmarine: Ogryn 2 is almost done, and I'm really pleased with him. I'm looking forward to seeing your plague ogryns.

Jenen: You made popcorn for this???
Flattered you find my ideas interesting. I have done a little more work on the legion masks, maybe you guys will like them when I post later today.

hobodog: It is good to hear someone say the look of my units matches their name

Due to general demand, I will be preparing a tutorial for my gas masks and ogryns. It should be ready within the next three posts.

    Pics later!

Can't wait for the tutorial. Those masks will def be used on my ogryns. They might be awhile though. I'm workin on so much stuff right now. I've still got 30 plague marines I need to finsh and 7 termis. Oh, and 4 rhinos and a landraider haha. And a plague tower..... Almost done my blight drone though.

How dare you desecrating the steel legion's holy equipment?! Blasphemy!

But your log is very promising and I like the conversions you have done here (not the steel legion though - one sorry tear for them).

You could also use Imperial Armour 5, 6, or 7, depending on who these guys will worship. There is a downloadable ruleset on Forgeworld.

Jenen: I'm lost here. Knew what would happen?? Don't go starting a new IG army until those Blood Pact are done!! lol

twistedmarine: I've started working on the tutorial, so I should have it up shortly

DonKarst0n: Not even the prettiest minis escape the wrath of my conversion addiction. I accept your outrage, but you may have to accept this blasphemy
    Glad you like everything else!

Brother Alexos: Thanks for the info. Is the download free?

    Incoming update!
The platoon command squad is complete!

Here is a close up of the rocket team. The new guy has a mask without any filter, just a full face covering mask. I call em "boogeymasks". Wanted to give him a kind of range finder on his gun to make him look a little more useful.

Re: Boogeymen; Renegades (I shouldn't be doing this)

And here is the second ogryn, 90% complete. He thinks he is sneaky.

The mask is all that needs to be finished. Here he is next to the platoon leader for size reference, and cool factor. Plus, it helped me realize that this is looking like a cohesive force.

Okay, this is basically where the ogryn tutorial begins. I have started working on my Bone'ead. He is going to be the mini I build this tutorial around. There will be a lot of conversions done with this, so I will try and get to GSing the mask asap, but a lot has to be done before I get to his head. Big challenge number one, his left arm needs to be...fabricated.
Anyways, here are some pics. From the front

    And the side

Not a whole lot going yet, but there is that big thing strapped to his back
Thanks for all of the feedback you guys have been giving me. It is highly motivating. I am happy to have started a plog that people seem to be enjoying.
    More to come!

Re: Boogeymen; Renegades (I shouldn't be doing this)

The downloads are completely free. The renegades list there only covers basic renegades, without daemonic allies or mutants, but includes basic things like Worker's Rabble, and Alpha Legion squads of Chaos space marines. If your friends are nice maybe they'll let you replace Alpha legion squads with Death guard, or Khorne Berserkers.

    http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/News/Downloads.html

If you want Khorne guard, you'll want IA 6, and for Nurgle you want IA7. My favorite conversion here is the spike on top of that one soldier's helmet.
