Shadows of the Glade of Silence

Hey guys, welcome to my first ever plog

Will start with a bit of personal info. My name is Shaun (or sasheep) and I live in Bath, England. I have been in the hobby for almost 10 years but am rather useless at finishing armies so I have decided to start a plog as an incentive. I have a fair few different fantasy armies, my biggest being skaven and the newest being TK. However I have decided to go back to my first love, Wood Elves, for storm of magic. I have dug out a load of old models that never saw any form of paint (or even glue in some cases!) and added 3 finecast treekin and a noble. I have also come up with some background for my army and will try and put it up at some point.
I decided to try and do something a bit different to my original colour scheme (a classic summer one) but didn't want to do winter or autumn as I see a fair few of them around which left me with spring. I wanted to try and keep my colours muted to show that it is still very early spring with winter still hanging on. After numerous attempts I decided to try and use a muted blue/green a darker green and brown as my main three colours. To represent the tranisition from winter to spring I wanted to have melting snow or patchy snow on the bases. Anyway here is my first model. There is one or two things I need to tidy up but overall I'm pretty happy with it. So what do you guys think? C and c is welcome Hopefully I will put a few other things up by the end of the week.

    Cheers guys
    Sasheep

I'm loving the blue! I think it works brilliantly for your theme.
    Can't wait to see more!
    The lion banner sways and falls in the horror-haunted gloom;
A scarlet Dragon rustles by, borne on winds of doom.
In heaps the shining horsemen lie, where the thrusting lances break,
And deep in haunted mountains, the lost, black gods awake.
Dead hands grope in the shadows, the stars turn pale with fright,
For this is the Dragon's Hour, the triumph of Fear and Night.
Vorash the Black's Warriors of Chaos! With Chaos Longship and scratch-built warshrine!

Good solid paintjob man, looks like a great start. A point of criticism though; the snow parts look like PVA right now imo, I would try to just put a couple of patches on the grass instead of 'mixed in with it'. Hope that makes sense.

I like it, the blue makes me think of flowers in bloom The snow looks like its melting imo which is good as that's what you wanted, maybe emphasis this with some water effect by it: never experimented with that myself. The painting is very well done, and I can see no faults. The one thing I would do, which is personal taste, is change the colour of the arrow flights/feathers to one that stands out more, and goes with the theme: another flower perhaps such as red or yellow look forward to more mate!

    Cheers for the comments guys
@Griffonclaw yeah I can see what you mean, might put a bit less snow on the next ones and see.
@JamieIsOOP yeah water effects is great idea, will have to try and get some in the next few days. It is interesting that you mention the flights becauseI was considering changing them to yellow this morning. Will give it a go

Well since yesterday I have started on the rest of my gg unit. they are all undercoated and have the base layers of greens, browns and skin. Just the blue to go and then I will start highlighting them all. I will probably do them individually though as I find my painting gets sloppy when I paint detail in batches . Will hopefully have at least one guy finished by tomorrow!

Great plog name. The painting is well done as well. I really like the half thawed snow base too.

Cheers mate, there is some backstory to the whole name which I will put up when I have typed it all out (its all randomly written throughout my uni note book atm ). As for the painting I have the skin, hair and flights to do on my second glade guard so he should be done by tomorrow. Hopefully the weather here will brighten up a bit tomorrow so I can finish undercoating my EG.

Re: Shadows of the Glade of Silence

Right so I have finished my second GG, kind of anyway. I have lost all my yellow paints so my flights are going to have to wait untill tomorrow when I can go into GW. I also have put sand on my EG and TK but it has been tipping down with rain all day so couldn't go and spray anything. I have been thinking of getting all the collectors models for WE soon, I just need to wait to get paid.
    Cheers

Re: Shadows of the Glade of Silence

Hey guys, got a few updates. I have finally been able to undercoat my EG and TK and will hopefully be able to paint some of them this week. I also have redone the flights on my GG.

I had like a second birthday today. Was cleaning out my room and I came across a load of un-opened boxes from unfinished projects so I decided to go and swap them for some new toys. I managed to get like £150 worth of things! And here is the stash:

The vortex things, magic cards and cockatrice I got the other day. While the SOM book, chimera, battalion, treeman, the WE bsb and the direct only EG only cost me like £3!

With the battalion, I am going to make another 20GG, 4 scouts (to add to my 6 I have already), 12 dryads and then convert the 8 GR into wild riders. I have 2 or 3 spare GR from older armies so I can push the unit up to 10 and I have already started converting a GR into a spellweaver on unicorn to join them or the TK. I have also counted up my points and to my surprice I have around 2400 plus my two SoM monsters.

Re: Shadows of the Glade of Silence

This is just a little update.
I have almost finished another 3 GG just got final details, skin, hair and bases to do and they are done.

I have also started on one of my EG. So far it is just the dark green that is finished.

My cockatrice is glued and my word is it awesome! Such a well sculpted model, there are loads of different textures and the detail is incredible! I haven't touched the chimera yet, might try and glue him together later on in the week. I have also ordered another 5 EG so my unit is now 19 strong. What sort of size do you guys think is good? I was thinking of aiming for around 25? I haven't opened the battalion (I find having too much on the painting table rather soul destroying and daunting ) but I was thinking of converting the GR into WR and adding 2 extra GR I have to make the unit 10 strong. Again is this an alright size for the unit or would it be better doing 2 units of 5? I will try and write up an army list soon and post it to get some c and c. I have also just organised a game for this weekend though I am not sure what I will be facing. My mate has HE, Skaven and TK. I haven't played his TK yet so I will probably be facing them. We have set it to 1200 points just so we can fit in a normal game and our first SoM game. Pretty excited, it has been a while since I have played him and used WE and SoM sounds like a good laugh.
    Cheers!

Re: Shadows of the Glade of Silence

    Cheers guys!
I have been rather bad at updating this thing and just painting my WE in general but my 'rents asked me to paint like the entire house instead of paying rent over the summer and it has taken longer than expected. BUT I have pretty much finished so I can now paint more interesting things . I have managed to finish the 3 GG above and am about half way through the other 5 in the unit. I have also made the chimera and started some of the things from the battalion. The games I have managed to play have been pretty good fun but I will put up a bit more detailed post about them later in the week when I have a few more models done.

These are looking great, I wasn't expecting to like the blues as much as I do - they really work well !

Also - I visited friends in Bath for the first time this year and it's a lovely place - you're a lucky man!

Cheers Demortu. It took about 5 different attempts to get a blue that looked good. And cheers again, Bath is rather beautiful
I have just made my first movement tray for my GG unit instead of trying to finish painting. Man I get distracted easily. Hopefully I will get motivated to try and finish the first unit. I was also wondering if anyone has some pointers for painting dryads (or any forest spisits for that matter) as I just can't get a colour I like.

Re: Shadows of the Glade of Silence

@Alathir- give in and do some WE! The more time I spend painting these guys the more I love the models. And we surely must be close to a new WE army book... well hopefully anyway.
And cheers to you and Artificer
Well firstly I want to appologise for being rather bad at keeping this updated. Had a manic time at home atm. My 'rents have needed me to paint the entire house, then help recarpet it and do other odd jobs for the past few weeks. Unfortunately my camera got packed up, and time has been short but thankfully it is all finished now .
I have managed to get some painting done and now my EG unit is about half way done and I have tried a few test models for my dryads but I still don't like any of them =/ Should hopefully have my camera again by tomorrow once we have unpacked anything so a better update is coming soon.
    Cheers.

Nice idea, very well painted elf folks.

Do you have also an idea how to make forest spirits in that colour scheme? some fairy - like blue glow maybe?

I will definetely keep an eye on your p-log.
