Dark Eldar Webway Portal (wip)

Being idle and all, I've decided to make a webway portal, as a gift to my friend, who happens to collect Dark Eldar. I've never liked the GW limited sales portal, the celluloid ball cut in half, then painted with LSD colours, so I decided to make something truly portal-ish. Materials used so far are earcleaning sticks for pillars, random plaster cast bitz (skulls and leering faces), modular bases for WH fantasy, one random disused 60mm round base, one necron monolith portal I got from gauss pylon sprue (most probably can't be used for anything else) and PVA glue + sand. So far, it looks like this:





My friend will do his "fair" share of work, and provide me with Dark Eldar bitz, spiky stuff et al. to make it look more sinister etc. Will decide on colour scheme shortly.

Hmm, looks like some Necrons turned to Chaos. The shape imo is not really Eldar-like. Maybe you can remove the skulls and goat-heads and add some lage blade and fins like used by the Venoms and Raiders?

I know it ain't much now, but I'm waiting to get dark eldar bitz, scythes and other pointy stuff from their sprues, to make it look more dark eldar like. This is just the foundation part. I still got a lot of work to do.

Right, I managed to loot as much of friend's dark eldar bitz as possible.
Trophies, fins, scythes, hooks and spikes galore. Gonna undercoat it soon, then we'll see...I think it really looks dark eldar-ish, and sinister, considering what horrors are lurking on the other side..

Neat! Nicely done. Good idea with the Necron portal bit, neatly solves the problem of having to sculpt greenstuff in a whirl-pattern or freehand-paint the same.

The portal is starting to gain shape. I've been pondering on the colour issue for some time, and then I opted for a subtle contrast of colours. The metallic gold for fins, spikes and scythes, neutral grey for pillars, stairs and carvings, and deep,deep blue for the portal and blue areas. I think it worked out fine, so far. This is how it looks like after basecoating and wash appliance.
