Arduhn carves out an empire in Nippon.

I've decided to finally do that samurai army I've always wanted to do, and have been talking about for a while. I'll base it on an Empire WHFB army. Here's the rough list, should be close to 2500:

    General
    Wizard Lord
    Battle Wizard
    Warrior Priest
    Battle Standard Bearer
    50 Naginata Ashigaru (Halberdiers w/command)
    15 Katana Samurai (Swordsmen detachment)
    15 Katana Samurai (Swordsmen detachment)
    40 Yari Ashigaru (Spearmen w/command)
    10 Teppu Ashigaru (Handgunners)
    10 Teppu Ashigaru (Handgunners)
    10 Ashigaru Archers (Archers)
    10 Ninja (Huntsmen w/marksman)
    20 Ikko Ikki (Flagellants w/prophet)
10 Yari Samurai Cavalry (Inner Circle Knights)
    1 Cannon

    not painted painted

Other possibilities that I'm thinking about to make the list reach 2500:

    Pistoliers
    Hellblaster
    War Altar
    Mortar
    Knights

I will be using models from www.perry-miniatures.com though, so some of those options would require conversions, or using models from the Choson Koreans line. I also have a few models from Okko.

Ninjas! The one on the left is from Okko

Ikko-Ikki. The guy in the middle is also from Okko. He's missing an arm.

Some characters. The ones in the back will be wizards and the Warrior Priest. I'm still debating which model to use for my General. The guy on the left is also from Okko.

Here are all the Okko ones together.

Here's a list of 25-32mm samurai model companies:

    West Wind Productions
These are very nice, for the most part. They are older style Samurai, Genpei or Mongol Invasion era. They are not as good quality sculpts as perry's, but they're not terrible. I'm using one for a musician in a knight unit right now.

    Perry Miniatures
The best 28mm Samurai I have ever seen. The whole range is good. They are realistic, well-proportioned, and consistant in quality and scale. Sengoku period.

    Kingsford Miniatures
They look fairly nice, but so far I haven't bought any. They do have some models that Perry doesn't produce, and they are really nice models too. I think the horses are one area that these minis fall down though. Sengoku Period.

    Hasslefree Miniatures
They have a ninja and a geisha. I haven't picked any up, but they look ok. A little on the pricey side.

    The Assault Group
I haven't picked any of these ones up yet, but they look alright. The quality is a bit variable though. They are older period, like West Wind. From what I've seen of painted ones, the non painted pictures let them down. I'll probably pick some up at some point to check them out. They are a bit pricy.

    Anima Tactics (Arcane Miniatures)
If you want to add a fantasy element to your heroes, there are a couple of models in this range that are suitable. I'll probably pick up Tsubasa Kuokami at some point.

    Eureka Miniatures
These are of variable quality. I'm probably going to pick up the ninjas and monks.

Okko (not sure if these are still in production)
Some good hero models. Some have a distinct anime style. A little more fantasy than historical, but well sculpted from what I've seen.

    Old Glory
A little smaller at 25mm. Some are kind of cool, but the quality seems to vary. Very cheap, but I'll probably skip them.

    Curtey's Miniatures
I would have considered these until I found west wind and the assault group. They're not bad, it's just that west wind and AG are the same style, and better sculpts.

    John Jenkins Designs
    some sweet scenery! Expensive though.

    Here are some new additions:

    Wargames Factory
These are fairly decent. They are inexpensive, and a great way to bulk out the army. They are also plastic, which makes conversions a possibility. Sengoku era

    Zenit Kensai
Nice models, but too expensive to make a unit, in my opinion. The characters are nice though, and they have a range of inexpensive terrain.

    Unreleased, probably from Andrea Miniatures
Not yet released, but these look nice. Great characters that will really stand out from the rank and file.

    Steel Fist
These should fit in nicely with the perry minis. They are a bit more expensive, and the range is limited right now, but it gives some variety for character models.

    Bushido
Decent character models. A bit fantasy, but they have a model suitable for an engineer.

    Clan War
Clan war has been reissued! Some cool characters, especially for wizards, and a decent, but expensive, selection of elite units.

I'm looking forward to this army, and really hope you will post bigger pictures, at that size I only see small silvery blobs ATM...

I will post some bigger pics ASAP. These were just taken with my iPhone, but when I have a bit more progress done, I'll pull out the removable lens camera and the light box, etc.

I made some progress on the Ikko-ikki. They are all primed and I went over them with black paint to catch the spots the primer missed. Today I'll start painting in earnest.

In the meantime, here's a link so you can see the Okko minis better. http://www.fantization.com/okkominia...byasmodee.aspx

Nice, a Nipponese log! We're awaiting painted miniatures.

Will you do some Japanese mythological monsters to accompany the army (as rank fillers, Storm of Magic monsters or the like)? In case you later on do, here's some links that might be of interest:

Very cool links, thanks for that Karak! I'm not sure whether I will include any fantasy elements in the list, I think I might want to stick to historical stuff, but if I change my mind, those links will be quite useful.

Re: Arduhn carves out an empire in Nippon.

Hey guys, I'm painting away here, but there's one thing I'm not sure about - the bases. Any suggestions for how to do them? I could just do the usual, sand, a bit of grass, done. However, I think I want to do something a bit different, I'm just not sure what. Another thing I need to consider is that the models are on little ovals, which I glue directly to the base, so there's a raised platform that they all stand on.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

I'd think about Milliput to blend in the oval. Other than that I'd just go for painted sand and grass, I don't think a lava base would fit.

Hehe, true. I might just go with sand and grass in the end. The ideas I had in mind were cobblestone/road, or a rice paddy field, but I'm not sure how I would do the latter. I also considered doing something with snow.

Great idea for an army! Cant wait to see how you paint them.

Regarding your bases, how about some pebbles like you see in Japanese water features?

There are some ideas in this link.

    http://www.cornishlime.co.uk/stores/...p?cat=8&sub=96

I had some modeling sand years ago but it was more like small stones. I didn't like it as it was not the effect I was after but it did remind me of pebbles here is a pic. If you want some im sure I have a bag of it somewhere.

Picture Removed as it was from the 41st Millenium*

P.S once you have had a look I will remove that picture as we dont want Tau cluttering up your plog now do we?

    Cheers

Hmm, that could be cool if I mixed it with water effects. I'm still not sure though. In the end I might just go with the usual and do something cool for a display board. I was thinking I would follow liljonas' lead and do an encampment.

Perhaps cherry blossoms falling on the snow:

Classic stuff. I know there's at least one company that makes cherry blossoms- I'll have to do some research.

Re: Arduhn carves out an empire in Nippon.

Thanks for the idea and links Dan. I'm not sure how I would do cherry blossoms, but it's a neat idea, and I think I will look into it, whether I do snow or something else.

I just sent off an order to West Wind for a few bits and bobs to fill in gaps with stuff that Perry Miniatures doesn't have. I picked up a mounted command, a samurai foot command, some Katana Samurai for variety, and Fujiwara, cause he looks cool.

I still need to order the bulk of the stuff from Perry, but I'm waiting to see if I get a store account. I'll probably do an order Monday, either way.

Anyways, looking around on some sites, I decided I would make a list of 25-28 mm Samurai models, with links, and some comments on the original post.

Looks good to me- can we get close ups on some of those miniatures? I'm not familiar with any of those model ranges.

    Ok
Ral Partha undead warriors (for a friend's mordheim warband). Ral Partha no longer exists unfortunately.

Ral Partha masters of Kung Fu (another friend's mordheim stuff)

    Hell Dorado Immortals

Ral Partha armoured ninjas. I'll probably use the one on the left in my ninja/huntsmen unit.
The rest are okko (link above for pics). Pennagolan (crazy vampire thing), and Oni Bushi to go with the undead samurai, plus a geisha for me.

The hell dorado ones are kinda small. I'll post a comparison with the perrys when I'm back in Edmonton. The wizard is big enough though. He's really cool, he has a dragon.

One other thing you might consider looking at are the L5R Clan War minis. You can also probably find the rulebooks for rather cheap (They have some rather interesting techniques, color schemes, and terrain tutorials in them).

I was about to scold you for taunting me with a miniature line that is out of production, but it appears they've been reissued.

King of the Dead: "That line is broken!"
    Aragorn: "It has been remade."

I'll check them out for sure!
