I disagree. When you paint a piece of cloth the fabric absorbs the paint. You do not end up with an inch thick layer of paint.

Looking good! I agree about thinning your paints down a bit, but I don't think it's that big of a deal. I think you should darken the ground part of the painting, as it looks a lot brighter than the sky and castle. I think mixing some chaos black in with the ground color (is that graveyard earth?) should give you a nice effect.

yep, its graveyard over scorched brown, but i'm going to be washing it with a layer of devlan mud and a light layer of badab black as well to make it darker and blend it a little better

i'm about to upload some pictures of my work so far on Alaric, he's absolutely massive and the Venethrax sword looks amazing on him. i figure it makes a good representation for the Dawnstar Sword, rules-wise, just need a cooler sounding name for it fluffwise, anyone have any suggestions?

    EDIT: Alaric has arrived

Medieval banners would have been made out of a thick clothe like canvas. Have you ever painted on canvas? The paint always looks thick, and you can see brush strokes. There's no reason to believe that wouldn't happen on a medieval banner.

Sorry No-One, not trying to derail your painting log.

Awesome sword! How are you planning to paint him?

Did they actually paint banners back in the day? I see more instances of banners being sewn with certain colors, as well as stained. Painted, not so much, because they would get destroyed when exposed to the elements.

his armor will be painted a dark red-black, or just black, still undecided but leaning most towards black armor, the robes on him will be the same dark red of the Sylvanian troops, and the sword will be dark metallic, with faintly glowing red on the runes, as well as blood splatters/fresh blood from the Empire troop that will be killed on his base

i'm debating on whether i want to keep the skull-mask the same color as the rest of his armor or make it bone, or something similar, to offset the colors on the model

a dark metallic silver color could definitely work for the mask, i'll take it under consideration

Gosh he's a big lad isn't he? He reminds me of the way Peter Jackson represented Sauron at the start of Fellowship of the Ring. You could imagine him harvesting (Dwarf, High Elf, Lizardmen) soldiers with sideways sweeps of his mighty sword.

You may have trouble fitting him in the front rank though. You could overcome this with kneeling thralls either side, basking in his supreme evilyness.
Marius Leitdorf is not dead, I bumped into him in Tesco last week.

it actually shouldn't be too bad since he'll be in a unit of ghouls, which, with them being all hunched over anyway, should actually make him look even more massive

    NEWS!:

Still slowly working on getting my swordsmen painted up, i've been very lazy about it and seriously need to get my **** together and get them worked on, i think this week i will be doing that so i might reward myself with the new models i just received

what models you say? what greatsword swinging, skullmask wearing, knights of Sylvania, you say? Someone's defected from Lord Dan's Sylvanians and joined Alaric's Bloodcult? why yes, yes they have, and i hope to be painting them shortly

Dan, awesome work on them man, cant wait to start slapping paint on them... in true Sylvania colors!

Excellent, I'm glad they arrived in one piece and that you approve of the conversion work. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress on them, even if you are painting them with girly faux-Sylvanian colors.
