Thanks DPA! I'm a sucker for nostalgia... Now and then I'm still flicking through the 2nd ed CSM codex + the accompanying 1996 White Dwarf. Good times, I was completely new to the hobby back then and couldn't believe how awesomely evil and baroque these "Chaos Space Marines" where!

Indeed. I cover the whole model in it. It does leave a bit of a shine, bit nowhere near a gloss finish. Maybe you've got a faulty bottle? The satin shine looks great on all the metals and seems to make the black a bit deeper (if that's even possible).

Man, I feel for you. That must be agonizing for a true hobbyist like you. Here's to your speedy recovery brother! That your Black Legion may grace these forums once more.

Thought I'd already commented on this, but I must have got distracted by something shiny and forgotten to do it....

Continually awesome work brother, I love the termies especially. Despite being the newer models, you've given them a real old school vibe that works really well!

On a side note, Vallejo varnish really is ace. I sometimes use their brush-on stuff (matt in my case), but I can highly recommend their sprays too, never had any "frosting" issues (or any other issues for that matter). They are in a completely different league to the GW rubbish!

Freaking beautiful stuff, especially the dreadnoughts (I agree with you that the model doesn't deserve the hate it gets, I've got a couple of them, too). Looking forward to seeing more of the army.

Thanks brothers for your kind words. The old Dread is indeed not half bad, its just a little static and well, the helmet is very uninspired. Other than that, it's still pretty decent. BUT still hoping for that rumored new dread though!

I registered on here to come and comment on this thread - it's a big inspiration for me and I've been referring to it via bookmark for a while now. Awesome work, far and away the best looking black legion warband I've come across.

Hey thanks Bog Witch, so much honour. Glad I could inspire you. I hope to finish some basic dudesmen sometime this week.. Starting to feel the pressure! But that's a good thing I guess, keeps me from playing too much World of Tanks.

But in the mean time, here's another update!

Aha! Forgot to drill out his plasmapistol.. don't you love it when that happens.

Still looking awesome brother! I love the double-handed axes and I especially love the red period banner! Keep em coming! What's next on the painting table? Any chance of an army shot soon?

Re: BasetheRuins 2nd Ed Black Legion

Thanks brother Atraphos and Vomikron! To honour your requests, here are some army shots. Sorry if the pics are a bit crappy. I took them with my girlfriends camera, a Canon EOS 450 D. A pretty nice camera, well suited for the enterprising amateur, though not professional in any way. I took the pics with the automatic macro function, yes I'm not quite a pro!

    So far I've got painted:
    - 35 Chaos marines
    - 5 terminators
    - 2 dreadnoughts
    - 1 sorceror
    - and NO finished bases! Still on the fence about them. I'm thinking snow bases (never done these before) or urban rubble. Any suggestions are more then welcome!

As you see the army most of all it lacks transports, armored support and HQ choices. Just before the new price hike I've ordered some stuff with Wayland Games: two rhinos (yay), another box of terminators and a termie lord. Should keep me busy for the coming months.

    Some 'closeups':

To answer your question Vomikron, here's what's coming up on the painting table: FW goodness! A Decimator with soul petard thing and a Black Legion dread with missile launcher/lascannon. Don't know when I'll get around doing these things though, real life pops its ugly head around the corner

Thanks for taking those pics brother, legion are looking fantastic all together! Still loving those dreads especially... And that Decimator is going to make me a very jealous man, they're amazing models and I know you'll do it justice! On the subject of bases, I'm usually a fan of the urban base over the snow base, HOWEVER I think the snow bases would provide a rather nice contrast to your black-armoured marines. Tough choice though, I agree!

Wowzers now that is what I call a Black Legion warband!

Seriously impressive stuff. I'm loving the old-schoolness of them all.

The FW additions are something I am really looking forward too. Tip for the Decimator though - a bit of thin plasticard would be helpful for making the PITA lower leg joints fit a lot better!

That's how you do Black legion! I love the scheme. So old school- my regular opponent when I was a kid played black legion, his dad painted them and they were similar to these. I love all the conversions with the big axes; neatly done and totally appropriate to the style of the minis. I look forward to seeing the FW stuff come together.

Snow bases would be a nice contrast to the black armours, but would probably look out of place on most boards, where as the rubble and city-themed bases are likely to fit into more boards...

Nothing fancy going on here, just a supremely well executed Black Legion army. Fantastic work!
