    Any Man o' War news?

I would LOVE to see this released again. I never had the chance to get into the old game, because I started playing Warhammer right after Mo'W "sunk," and I will never get into one of the many E-Bay bidding wars for the old rules and hard-to-find ships that are scattered across the Sour Sea.

Is there even a tiny rumor of a re-release?
I'm almost desperate enough for a false hope. Ships can make a campaign complete, so I thought I'd try the new product from "WizKids."
Buying the "Pirates of the Spanish Main" card game, and trying to give racial/army character to those VERY simplistic rules is near impossible.

    Yes, I know I'm crazy.

Actually there is a "tiny rumor" about a rerelease of man o' war from Specialist Games. (Called "Man o' Warmaster") They mentioned it quite a long time ago, I think somewhere around the time the new Mighty Empires rules were released... I think they still want to do it, but I have no idea how many years until it surfaces... (Then again, I guess one shouldn't complain too much about free stuff...?)

If you are that desperate for new Mo'W rules, why not sed an e-mail to Jervis asking about it? (As long as it is a polite e-mail it can hardly hurt, right?)

    [EDIT]

Found the quote from Jervis, but can't remember exactly when it's from... (Ie, although the intent to making it is probably still there, how much longer it will take? Well... the phrase"don't hold your breath" comes to mind!):

Man-O-War: Rick is very keen to do a new version of Man-O-War using the Warmaster rules mechanics as a starting point and with a new range of ship models. While MOW was a good game for its time, it suffered badly from over-development, also known as the 'everything and the kitchen sink' syndrome. I mean, Skaven and Ork fleets, what were we thinking?!?! We also think we can do a much better job on the ship models this time round. For these reasons we won't be doing a reprint of MOW, but you can expect to see Man-O-Warmaster rules coming out from Fanatic a couple of years time.

With the downsize at Fantanic, I doubt that MoW is likely. Fanatic has enough problems to keep the current range of Specialist Games prospering.

During the mid 1990's, when I had just discovered GW, I had found by chance at a small retailer shop, a copy of Spacefleet.

Later on, I went to my usual GW shop, and asked a redshirt about this mysterious game. He told me taht it was an old game of spaceship battles and that it was a very bad game. I asked him if there were chances that it be re-done, he answered NO.

Roughly five years later, Battlefleet Gothic was released.

All this simply to say not to loose hope. They may not want to release it now, but they may do in the future...

I understand that a new version of Man O War is on the list of things to do at GW, but whether resources will allow it to become more than a brainstroming session I doubt it.

If it did, currect GW trends are to move away from oodles of cards and tokens, which Man O War did have.

I would love to see a new version of Man o' War, but I doubt GW will do it. GW always brings up the fact they won't re-release a game that requires cards and punch out tokens in the main box. I think a new edition of Man o' War could be done without the use of cards and with tokens made of plastic. That way the components could be made in-house. GW just has to be convinced that it would be profitable.

It would be good if GW could move Man O War to a living rulebook without the requirement for endless counters, as Fanatic?specialist Games did for Bloodbowl.

Re: Any Man o' War news?

Man o war was a game set in the WFB world, but each race had a fleet of ships, so set at sea obviously (!) It was essentially ship to ship combat

I think I have already answered this question on this new incarnation of Portent. At the moment there are no plans to rerelease Man O War. There is a Warmaster based Naval game that was in one of the Fanati Mags, though I can not remember off the top of my head.

Re: Any Man o' War news?

Thank you all very much. With so much attention being focused on campaigning in the White Dwarfs and supplements, I'd hope that there would be a greater interest in maintaining trade routes and such as a result.

Here's my suggestion to avoid "over-expansion" of a new naval game:

I'd like to see the different races get their own fleets once again. Sea powers like Empire, Dwarfs, and High and Dark Elves should have many ship options and unique abilities, but Skaven, orcs, and undead, for instance, may only have one or two ships unique to their race. So, if a player wants an all - orc fleet, he can possibly take the unique "goblin fire ship," but any other type of ship in the fleet would have to come from the few ships from the generic ship list, similar to the common magic items list in Warhammer. So, the orc player could say that his boyz stole these basic ships from the Empire and made them "orcy" (ring a bell?). As a result of these generic ships of various sizes being crewed by orcs and goblins, the rule book would state the stat differences: sailing and navigation would suffer, boarding may improve, etc.
This way, GW wouldn't have to overproduce too many varients of ships that may not sell; thus, there's less risk to GW.
GW could make "plastics" (easier to convert too) for the generic/common ships list, and an undead player would be able to have his "ghost ship" as well as his plundered or "raised" common ships.

The main rule book could include all of this info as well as each army list. So, each army would have its own list of what would be allowed from the common ships. While the Empire/DoW would have possibly every common ship at its disposal, the Skaven might not be able to crew some of the largest ships for instance.

Does this sound plausible, yet safe for GW? Yeah, I'm still nuts.
