Rounded Captain Lysander Strike Force (IMPERIAL FIST)

I believe this list is more balanced and when I feel like throwing down even more terminators I shall use a Deathwing list rather than hearing that I smell like my chosen colors...

Comments and critique are welcome and appreciated. Particularily what armies and lists you believe my army would have trouble with....

Here's some background fluff on my army....

I thought I'd poke some fun at the serious nature of my chapter, so here goes...

Since the Imperial Fists are from Earth (sorry Holy Terra... ), a particularily sneaky, high level Apothecathery decided to tap into the vast genetic cogitator banks on Terra and clone the great Cold Warriors of the 20th century USSR to aid the 1st Company....

In great Soviet Army tradition, the Imperial Fists' 1st company attacks as a shock army, the core of this doctrine is to put as much heavy armor and massive firepower down the throat of an enemy position at point blank range as is possible. Probe the enemy for weakpoints in his battle line with skirmish forces, and then deal a great hammer blow against its weakest link.

Starting with the Skirmishers (The Sickle)

My Assault Squad is led by Veteran Sgt. Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev ; in the 41st millenia, Gorbie says "NEYT" to Perestrioka and UN mandates with the crushing force of a crackling power fist to the skull....Death from above, Komrade.

Tired of throwing shoes, and perhaps a bit crestfallen over the Cuban Missile Crisis, Veteran Scout-Sgt. Nikita Sergeyevich Kruschev has stopped pounding his fists into G-6 summit desks and started squishing enemy artillery crews into chowder with his power glove and bolt pistol.

"We will bury you" is often the last thing rear echelon troopers hear before his squad springs out of hiding....

Tac Squad Veteran Sgt. Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev and his goon squad roll over helpless satellite states with a blinged-out Zlin limo-transport (extra armour, smoke, and cool commie flags flapping on the deck). He deals with capitalists by capping them with rapid fire bolter headshots, sprinkled with plasma and krak missile death....

Before that heretic mole can confess to his capitalist pig-dog CIA handlers, Scout Sgt. Yuri Vladimirovich Andropov has his squad of elite KGB snipers paint his head in red laser dots and takes the target down faster than a lost South Korean airliner....

    Terminators (The Hammer)

With his faith in the Emperor,Communism, and his parish school upbringing , a young Master Epistolary Nikolia Gerasimovich Kusnetsov was previledged to hear an address of his great leader at an early age, and soon learned there was more to the galaxy than the backwater town of Medvedka could offer him.

Through years of hard combat and intense training, he rose through the ranks until the chapter's librarians singled him out to develop his dormant abilities.
A masterful tactician and great leader, he has honed his latent powers into a fearsome battlecraft as he wages war for Rogal Dorn and the Golden Throne.

Always the tinkerer, adapted to service in Lysander's 1st Company as Master Epistolary by using his experience as a Deathwatch Librarian and has modified his personal weapons and those of his Terminator Squads' Sargeants to make the most impact on the signature style of the Imperial Fists Veteran Company; a massive point-blank salvo of firepower into the fulcrum of the enemy line with a precision deep-strike afforded by the orbiting Phalanx and battlefield teleport homers.....

Leading a roving band of merry Marxists (in the heaviest armor Mother Russia-I mean the Emperor- can provide), Terminator Sgt Sergei Kirov acts as the
right hand man to Big Joe, the Chapter-Master. With a built-in cooler for his plasma shot power packs and vodka, he strides the battlefield in his terminator armor with power-sword humming and combi-plasma locked and loaded. When he and his squad make contact with enemy forces, they put down the hurt, Oktober Revolution-style...

Ever the hardliner, Terminator Sgt. Konstantin Ustinovich Chernenko used his experience at escalating the Cold War in the early 80's to great effect when he travelled to Titan with Epistolary Kusnetsov to do a stint with the Deathwatch. After a succesful campaign of fighting Swordwind Eldar and tree hugging Tau, he has since become an advocate of plasma technology and has helped the Librarian Kusnetsov requisition precious combi-weapons for the 1st Company from Titan's exotic Ordo Exenos Armory as reward for their years of service in exterminating alien scum...

Born in the town of Sovetsk , Terminator Sgt. Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Molotov was a quick study in Soviet revolutionary principles. A firebrand Bolshevik in early days, his talents at diplomacy and espionage have granted him many posts as an emissary for the Imperial Fists during the short periods of peace that break out unexpectantly in Segmentum Solar.

Somewhat embittered from his ouster from the Communist party for attempting to depose Kruschev. (now also in the 1st Co. as a Veteran Scout Sgt.;they try to keep those two apart in the lunchtime cafeteria). Molotov goes to battle with a gilded Dralthian Great-Sword given to him by the Arch-Doicese of Uluant. Glowing bright green when the enemies of the God-Emperor are near, Molotov wields this potent weapon honored to him for his single-handed suppression the Golan Rebellion thru political brinksmanship alone.

Those that question his battle prowess will quickly discover why the name Molotov is Russian for "from the hammer." Still not a convert to combi-plasma technology, Molotov instead puts his trust in his standard issue Storm-Bolter and the promethian-filled Molotov Cocktails he stashes underneath his terminator battle tunic...

Captain Reginald Lysander, originally a high fashion runway model/child actor. (making several appearances in the highly accalimed White Dwarf publication) A big hearted boy with dreams of Little-Broadway, he was not able to find his true calling for many years.

Nevertheless, after an awkard McCauley-Culkin phase filled with free drugs and high living, little Reggy binged and purged until he was granted a vision of the Emperor, made a pilgrimage to Terra, and pledged his life to one of service in the Adeptus Astartes.

His self-less acts of valour and his complete inabilitiy to hit at Initiative 5 have been an example to all Imperial Fists who seek to be 'pure of heart and strong of body, untainted by doubt and unsullied by self-aggrandisment.' His crack Teleport Task Force is an example to all Sons of the 7th Legion; Bright stars in the firmament of battle ready to Power-Fist heretics and xenos scum into pulpy chewing tobacco anywhere and anytime....

[Still, he thinks its kind of creepy when all the guys call him Comrade-Captain Lysander-ov and he keeps finding copies of the Communist Manifesto tucked into the back-pocket of his terminator armor......]

In my opinion you need to work on the forces you put on the table at the begining of the game .

In my opinion relying on an 8 man assualt squad and a unit mounted in a rhino to ensure your assualt squads get telleported close enough to get into hand to hand is a little.... flawed.

(yes i do see the 5 man scout squad but those guys can be killed in one turn of shooting by a single unit unless they are totaly hidden so i dont seem them having much use.)

Mainly It just seems like if this lists main flaw is that its too easy to defeat in detail.

You are kind of relying on that Teleport homer to get you units into combat, what is your plan if the 10 man squad gets squished and the termies have to rely on just the teleporter and the scatter dice?

Have you thougt of the merits of drop pods? If you drop the Rhino and assault squad you have a starting point of 2 units of scouts on the ground and reinforcments of drop poding termies.

Re: Rounded Captain Lysander Strike Force (IMPERIAL FIST)

I agree that the units on the ground are going to suffer before the cavalry arrives....

However, the scouts will be hiding as best as possible, and I'll have two chances every turn starting at the beginning of turn two to land ALL my terminators at once....

That works out to two chances at 4's (after one round of enemy shooting)
and two chances at 3's after two rounds of shooting ect....

I have tried to come up with a force that balances out the need for a good starting presence with a devastating terminator contigent that will wipe out entire flanks and roll up the rest of the army in detail.

With this configuration, I have 18 marines in power armour that must be killed to eliminate their teleport homers. I have an additional 6 scouts who will be staying put unless a juicy target like a Basilisk or Broadside wanders too close to their neck of cover....

Any more terminators, and I end up playing hide and seek with a min sized scout squads (no fun in that really, especially for an opponent).

Any less terminators, I risk not being able to wipe-out whole squads in one shooting phase, essential to stopping enemy units from bogging down my termies in close combat.

OR Alternative 2000-3000 pts Heavy Armour Siege Brigade

(more for painting and treadhead character than for being effective)

deleting the 2 Landspeeders give me 1150pts to play with....

added the background fluff to original post ^^^

Having read the IF fluff about the Phalanx has sparked my imagination from this telling excerpt:

the Phalanx is the biggest ship in the Imperium..... a giant space station the size of a small moon

I plan on making a Yellow Deathstar out of some old star wars models I've seen around....

Going to mount it on a wire platform and have it loom over the battlefield!!!

I am also painting up a Forgeworld Prometheus kit that I have converted using the Damocles Command Rhino to have a giant satellite dish and extra sensors to physically represent Lysander's Teleport Assault rules as a data link relaying teleport info from the battlefield back up to the orbiting space station...

In games over 2500 pts, it will be Lysander's personal transport!

Hehe very cool army list. If it wasn't for the Lysander teleport attack special rule I could see soimeone pulling out the old "cheese" argument, but I think it's just plain fluffy personally. Hope to hear about your glorious victories soon, because you've certainly covered all your bases and made great selections.

This doesn't happen very often but I can't think of a single suggestion on the list. All squads are at even numbers, and I'm sure you've heard all the debates on the merits of Fury of the Ancients versus Fear the Darkness, so I won't go there. Personally I'd probably make an exception to my normal rule and go with FOTA in this army anyway, since pinned units don't shoot back and are easier to charge turn after you teleport in

Re: Rounded Captain Lysander Strike Force (IMPERIAL FIST)

    Thanks, Jericho

Been fine-tuning this list for a little while now. I feel like I have a pretty good balance. I originally started collecting Imperial Fist about 4 months before the new Codex came out. I had heard that Lysander was coming back, so I wanted to make a fluffy army full of character using Lysander to distinguish my Imperial Fists from the other codex chapters.

At the time I assumed that Lysander was going to have rules similiar to his old "Bolter Drill" abilities he had as a Sargeant. I figured that if he was now a Captain, maybe the whole army would benefit from rerolling bolter shots, not just one particular squad. I began to plan accordingly....

When the new codex did come out, I put Lysander on the back burner and made a bread and butter Fist army.

Then I got to thinking how I could incorporate Lysander in a Termie heavy army that was made feasible by his special rules and the fluff facts of him flying around from battle to battle in the Phalanx-deathstar. (apparently it has more teleporters than most marine battlefleets)

In all honesty, I don't believe this list would be feasible without the boost assault cannons receive. It's hard to justify the pts cost of terminator squads unless they are packing two in each.

As my list grows, though, you can be sure there will not be squadrons of Asscannon Tornadoes flying all over the battlefield. The rest of my units are fluffed out towards my Chapter's codex and siege-specialist doctrines; Landspeeders fly around with Multi-Meltas for busting fortifications and guns, and Heavy Flamers for clearing bunkers and pill-boxes of dug-in infantry, for example.

I have been collecting the 5th company as well, and have a mostly codex organization besides some tank hunting dev's. Takes a long time to paint yellow armor to a good standard....I have a gorgeous Forgeworld Vindicator still in its box. About 4000+ pts, only about 850 pts tournement ready so far.

I will also be getting a digital cameria soon , hope to post my troops up soon.
(I am using only new plastic termies for my army)

    Thought about ...joinng...the ...dark... side.....

I'll see if I get bored after a few months of solid gaming with this list.

I have Crusader and Prometheus already, as well as a Venerable Tank Hunting Dev Dread I have converted up...

I thought of a cool idea using those Landraiders for my Fists in big games, though.

I can allocate my Prometheus to Lysanders squad (5 guys).

Add junior Codicier to Kusnetsov's squad to make 8 for my Crusader.....

and then deploy the LR's on the table, but deep-strike my termies!

The 'Raiders haul ass 12" for 1-2 turns to roughly the area I would like to deepstrike...

Then my termies arrive, annihilate the perimeter, and two squads mount up in their transports! Don't forget Kuznetsov's squad will have TWO librarians and a Sgt with power weapon Furious Charging out of a Crusader already flanking the enemy...

I like this list, and the army background, its very original and enjoyable to read.

I have a question, I dont have the new SM codex, are combi-weapons the same as 3rd edition, only getting to fire the non-bolter once per game?

Re: Rounded Captain Lysander Strike Force (IMPERIAL FIST)

drop the librarian, you only really need 2 characters in 3000pt games, spend the points you get on increasing your termie squads.

    Great stuff.

Andy Chambers (that pinko commie) would be proud.

As for the list itself, it might prove a challenge to properly pull it off, but it should be doable to kick some ass...

Re: Rounded Captain Lysander Strike Force (IMPERIAL FIST)

Yes, they are still one shot weapons.

They are great on deepstriking termie sgt's and characters though. Rapid fire plasma, two shots, gets hots save of 2+, and then you can rapid fire your bolter or move and fire single shots at 24" while still being able to assault. Giddy-up!

I calculated the amount of kills I would lose(on average) from dropping StormBolters in favour of combi-plasma. I lose about 0.6 kills per turn outside rapid fire range and no change within it. This is worth it as I am deep-striking into rapid fire range with my T-homers, and I will get an average of 4 dead marines for my 6 rapid firing combi plasma shots from my 3 sgt's.

On average, with the combi plasma shots, my termie contingent should be able to wipe out about 13-14 marines in one shooting phase....

Re: Rounded Captain Lysander Strike Force (IMPERIAL FIST)

    thanks, that was very constructive.

If I wanted to play an easy boring force, I would just take as many basic space marines as I could possibly fit into the points, with a few missile launchers and plasma guns sprinkled in.

Been there, done that. I'd rather try something more exciting that leaves less room for error than a basic marine list.

Why play an army just to win if you dont even enjoy its character and fluff?

I would rather lose with an army I like, than win with an army I don't enjoy painting and displaying.

Now if you can tell me what aspects of this force that really bother you, I would thank you for your input.

Well, its been a year since I touched this thread, I've been really busy since then and have been out of touch with the hobby since the summer.

Just wanted to bump this thread and get some fresh input, maybe some new perspective with the Tyranids, BT's, and Tau coming out...

While I still have an option of using wither a 6 man sniper squad or a 7 man tac squad, I lean heavily on the use of the 7 man tac squad as they will be able to soak up much more firepower and divert attention for the T-Homer equipped squads.

Re: Rounded Captain Lysander Strike Force (IMPERIAL FIST)

Well at a year out, haven't you played your list sufficiently to know if you like it or not?

Myself, I run Lysander, Libby, and 3 termie squads with 2 scout squads w/ homers for the full "boo-yah" effect... but that's me.

Re: Rounded Captain Lysander Strike Force (IMPERIAL FIST)

Well, I'm a pilot in Canada, so my last job took me far, far away from civilization, paint pots, and this forum. Essentially I am right where I left the thread, just restarted painting up the army, all my guys built, primed and about 70% of my models are 75% done painting wise.

I really must find a digi-cam so I can post pics of my few guys that are close to finished. The damning thing about yellow is that you always think about adding one last subtle layer on an otherwise finished model.....A few are already up to 7-8 thin layers....
