Rogue Trader Marines and Other Loyalists

    Hi all,

I recently had a log which was going to be full of random rogue trader miniatures that I am painting. The problem was I got sidetracked by warmachine and when I got back to painting GW minis I realised I need to paint them 1 army at a time otherwise nothing will ever get done...
Now Im not saying I wont do other bits occasionally as I like to wander but this log will cover all my loyalist Rogue Trader minis as they get painted. I will be opening a Xeno and Chaos log in the future when I get to those armies.
Anyway enough rambling. Below is a current to do list. Im not planning on anything to special painting wise as I work a lot so painting needs to be neat and fairly quick.

lots of people viewing but not much interest in posting..
Not to worry I should have some more pics a bit later. Marneus Calgar Mk1 is done and so is the Unreleased Chapter Standard. I just need to decide on a banner at some point for him...

Some pretty old models there, a great log in my opinion. What chapter are you doing? I've never seen a colour scheme quite like this before.

Brother Alexos - Its no particular chapter just something I can paint fast and looks good enough to use on the battlefield. Its based on a colour scheme I used a long time ago in my youth playing space hulk..

    Anyway on with the updates..

Marneus Calgar Mk1 is done and heres a few pics for you all..

Okay on with the chapter standard..
Something a bit special here. This mini was never sold and I got it via a collector a while back. I have only ever seen 1 of them on the net and im pretty sure that this is the one I got as the flash and mold lines matched perfectly with the pics on the net.
If anyone has any other info on this mini I would love to hear it..

    Chapter Standard

    Rear pic

I plan on doing an old style painted paper banner for him later along with banners for the rest of the army sergeants but this will most likely be the last thing I do along with the squad markings so I can tell them apart on the battlefield.

Not sure whats coming up next so keep watching.
    As always C&C is welcome..

Great to see such original stuff and in such quantity. I wish I could say it's making me nostalgic but it's a bit before my time...! Really looking forward to seeing that Landraider and I still think 1st Edition Terminators hold their own next to the latest minis.

Re: Rogue Trader Marines and Other Loyalists

You are in for a suprise with the terminators then.
I think you may be thinking of the boxset terminators which look similar to the ones out now. I have a squad made up of the original 3 releases before the ones we all recognise now.. One is armed with a triple bolter

Nice stuff - old Marneus on the Latrine of Macragge always brings on a chuckle, but I really like the bikes. One thing, though, the white paper backdrop seems a bit harsh and may affect how well one can see the figures - have you considered trying a light blue? I consider light pastels to better complement figures. Might elicit more responses, too.

Kaisergrenadier - Thanks for the tip I will try to get a blue sheet printed next week and Im glad you approve of the toilet master macragge..

Hadriel - your support is appreciated.

Todays update is below. My first finished assault squad with the old style jumppacks. for some reason the lighting came out a bit yellow. No idea why as I am using the same lamp as all the other pics in the same location. Anyway onto the pics....

I may have to retake them if anyone can suggest why they came out yellow and how to prevent it..

Re: Rogue Trader Marines and Other Loyalists

Did you take them at a different time of day? Yellowing can happen if, for example, you were to take pictures in the evening as there is less natural light and so the tint of the bulb becomes less a direct, highlighting illumination and more of a wash in place of the natural light of day. If that makes sense. The assault marines look cool too

Re: Rogue Trader Marines and Other Loyalists

Hadriel - I took them at the same time with the same lighting which is weird. Even weirder is todays pics all taken within 2 minutes of each other and some are yellow and some are not..

Anyway todays update a bit earlier than normal.. I finished up one of my 2 devastator squads. this unit has 2 plastic missle launchers and 2 heavy bolters 1 the early 1 piece and the other slightly later shoulder mounted.
The sergeant has a double banner pole. I only have 2 of these so it made sense to put them in the devastators. all the seargeants without jumpacks have metal backpacks with rather bendy metal banner poles on them ^^

I have noticed a lot of severed human heads on the early marines. I guess thats something they mostly dropped later on..

Tomorrow we have dreadnoughts and assault bikes with sidecars.

    C&C welcome as usual

Quite decent! It's always nice to see vintage dreads, and those assault bikes turned out quite well, too.

One thing on your photos, though. I know I've already been b****ing about you using a white paper background instead of a light pastel blue, but it also looks like you photograph during daytime, but against the natural light source (cf. dreadnought pic).

I would strongly suggest you somehow reverse that order, i.e. have the sun in your back (although be careful not to cast shadows, then X-D), as this will greatly improve the lighting and visibility of your figures. If you cannot arrange that, having the sun shine on from the left or right does a similar job, although not as effective as having natural light behind the photographer.

Here's a diagram I whipped up to demonstrate the setup:

It really works wonders. If you cannot use daylight as a light source, artificial lighting will work as well, but it may distort the colours.

Re: Rogue Trader Marines and Other Loyalists

Thaks for that. I can change to left or right sunlight. The lamp I use has a daylight bulb in it so the 2 togehter hopefully will get me better pics.

Rogue Trader FTW!!! Love it, man! Being part of the Old Guard and having quite the (unpainted) collection, mostly guard and space ork raiders, from the old days, I love to see someone do justice to and old marine army... Just wish your lighting was better - the minis look like they're spot on, but the pics are too dim... Subscribed..
