A little bit of plague (marines)

I've been working on a little side project to both clear out my bits box and build some chaos marines that look more like I imagine them in my mind. I like it more than the "marines, now with added spikes!" that the chaos models look like to me when you build them as they look out of the box.

For now, I'm tinkering with my first few paint schemes in this range after having done a little extra conversion work on the basic idea of these guys, so I thought I'd post a few pictures to see what people think so far.

    Enjoy the rotten, filthy bastards:

Great paintjob and a fantastic conversion. I really like the route you are going with these guys. Definitely watching this one

I really like these guys too. Only thing I would add is some dirtyness to their caps. I think they look too clean compared to their armor. Your paint jobs are nice though.

Looks really good, good job on the painting. Ive always liked it when chaos warriors are converted into 40k marines, definately gonna watch this further

A couple more. I was playing around with green skin tones at first but wanted something that caught the eye a bit better and was still to the side of disgusting / diseased / strange. Hence the experimentation:

    Enjoy.

Very characterful, very moody and menacing. The red works really good with the dirty green. Great job!

Nice, not bad. But I would definitely try to change the leather boots into more Astartes styled leg armour.

I'd say your ideas are working very well. They look great. Great colours and your conversions are superb.

Do you cut the arms and shoulders off the chaos warrior body?

Really nice. I like the fact that they hold a real sense of size and strength to them, like the powerful brutal warriors they are meant to be. Only thing I could perhaps say is some of them dont look 'advanced' enough, i.e. the fella with the pistol and axe. Perhaps adding the odd backpack or piece of equipment? Thats just my thoughts, but still very cool. Keep it up!

Re: A little bit of plague (marines)

First, thanks for all the compliments. I thought these guys would be a nice little addition to my armies as a side-project, but I'm rapidly thinking it's worth doing the whole force of them. I am thinking a few squads of plague marines with rhinos, a decent bevy of characters to pick from (demon princes, sorceror, lord, and maybe Typhon), some terminators, some bikes. I'm torn on my heavy support options; I like vindies, I like Land Raiders, I like oblits, and I have the idea in my head of hacking up a soulgrinder to make a nurgle-themed defiler. If nothing else, I have a few more of these guys to do, and have included some special weapons and mutations in the group coming next.

To address some of the other suggestions in the thread (and I appreciate the input - nobody can ever think of everything themselves):

I am torn on this one; I have some capes in brown, but on the other hand, I've been thinking about your suggestion and I think it has some merit. I may just repaint the brown capes in red and run with it.

Ironically it was the astartes legs that made me want to do these guys; there is something about marine legs I just don't like very much. I know that is purely an aesthetic thing (I am sure there are people who feel the reverse, such as possibly you), but while I don't mind the terminator look, I am trying to avoid the leg armor on these guys.

Varies by guy. One of the things I have been trying to do is not make all the plague marines carbon copies. I want them in various states of disrepair and replacing their armor over time with portions manufactured or forged by the hands of chaos, so not necessarily standard imperium issue. Some use marine chestplates, arms, and shoulder pads. Some are using more of the chaos warrior.

On average, the trick is hollowing out the chaos "shell" to drop the imperial parts in, then green stuffing around it or over it to hide the seams. Very easy to do, actually, with the shoulder pads, as sculpting the fur onto the cape is not a great task. Trimming out the rest and fitting things evenly can be more tricky, but I think not impossible. Part of the beauty of nurgle is you can green stuff over with slime and buboes and it looks fine. By which I mean appropriately gross.

This has been the trickiest part of the project for me. How much marine is too much, and how much is too little? Obviously the helmets, weapons, and shoulder pads lean heavily towards the marine side of things. The rest is kind of a mash together, and I went with the no-backpack look at first, but perhaps I will add some after having looked these guys over. I am still not sure on it. Some of the other units look more "tech" oriented, especially when some of the special weapons are involved. Certainly the termies and bikes will. Something to think about.

Yes, defiantly keep the red capes!! The red contrasts very well with the green. I would just dull done the brightness of the red is all.

    Looking forward to updates.
