    Salvation's Reach - First review

    Hi everyone,

I saw this on Dan Abnett's facebook page so thought I would share.

It's the first review of Salvation's Reach, and it sounds like it will be a good one. MIght have to drag myself to Games day to get a copy early!

Looks promising, though I'll reserve judgement as the last half dozen gaunt books have been dire IMO written on autopilot knowng they will sell well whatever the content

I agree that some of the books in The Lost arc have been less good then some earlier ones, but in my opinion Sabbat Martyr and Traitor General were probably the two best he has ever written. Right up there with the greats like Legion, Horus Rising, early Gaunt and Eisenhorn and Ravenor, if not better than some of those.

Necropolis is the best book in the entire GG series by a few hundred miles and then some

I enjoyed them all up to Traitor General , with the best being necropolis and some of the saint series. Traitor general was ok, bar the slaughter of CSM in hand-to-hand combat, but its one really downhill since.

I get the impression that Abnett is pretty much allowed to do whatever he wants now and that includes how much effort goes into a book. The last 3 in particular are dire.

I think the book needed to be another 100 pages as things where a little compressed.
Was one of the better Fleet Battles I have read and enjoyed it a lot.

I have all the Series and some are better than others but a good set of books.

As Zenxzen said, it should have been a bit longer. But the real problem, I think, was that there was so much Abnett could have done, and then didn't. Nonetheless, still one of the better ones, imo.

Out of interest, how do you go about getting co-signed as a reviewer and get the preview stuff? I've done some reviews on my blog (which gets maybe some old granny having a look, and probably my cousin when he's drunk). Is there a traffic minimum you have to have or something?

Re: Salvation's Reach - First review

I got it out of luck. I went to Waterstones when Dan Abnett was in for signings and not many people turned up due to bad advertisement (even the local GW forgot... manager "moved" the week after")

While there I basically spent two hours chatting to Dan about stuff and a guy who worked there who does a monthly "geezine" for Waterstones. We got on really well with the guy from waterstones and he asked if I fancied writing a review for them. I said go for it and gave him my address so he could get a couple of books sent to me. I have been receiving all pre-releases since and I pick the ones I want to read/review.

We have skipped a few months recently due to work and both of us writing something for the BL submission.

To be honest the best thing to do is contact BL. Say that you write book reviews (link to site/print off some depending how you want to contact them) and see what happens.

If you don't try you will never know!

We kind of knew number 3 was the plot of the book lol

5, I thought was surprising (well, it became obvious early on, but prior to reading the book...major surprise). 4 should have been handled much better. 1 Agreed. And 2 was definitely one of my favorite bits to the book.

I've been in quite frequent contact with Black Library for a few years now. Gotten to know a lot of those blokes personally, and many, including Dan have become good friends. They're an amiable bunch really, lots of great people. Best option is to contact BL via email, if you have a site that you do reviews for. They'll put you on a list of some sort, and as long as you consistently put out reviews, they'll keep sending you books. It's a win-win. Or an alternative to email is to get in personal contact with them at any of the number of Games Days throughout the world. They're always willing to have a chat with people interested in knowing more about BL and are eager to field questions if you have them.

If you check out the blog post on blacklibrary.com detailing the release of Salvation's Reach, you'll notice my "quick-quote" was used in that post. It's quite an honor, but it's taken a while to get that far really.

    1. Good to hear. Crusade command is finally taking them seriously.
    2. Awesome. I've loved that name for a unit since Freespace
    3. Yep, it's on the back of the book too. Not exactly a spoiler
    4. What chapters?
    5. I actually suspected it was possible for a while now. I also think that there is a Cain the younger running around via the Inquisition

Guys iam new member -so really dont know how to make spoiler questions but - as said River Song SPOILERSSSS - questions to the one who already read the book?

    1) Does ghosts die in this book fighting the Sons of Sek - or it without casualties like in Blood Pact?
    2) Someone of the major ghosts die? Except Dorden - he dies from cancer anyway?
    3) If they fighting with 3 Space marines - when they fighting against CSM i hope? Does Space marine die here? If yes - who kill them? Mighty Demon?

not everyone has read the book. And if you want answers, my best suggestion would either be to email me, or READ THE BOOK!
