Thread: Ogre Kingdoms 8th Ed Tactics Recipe Book

Re: Ogre Kingdoms 8th Ed Tactics Recipe Book

single tusks are worth taking even if they never kill a single miniature. they earn their points back during deployment when you place a tusk down and the enemy places a unit. gives you a strong advantage for a meagre cost in points. if the skinks shoot the tusks then great a whole unit just shot a single miniature instead of shooting units of ogres or monsters where the damage could be more significant. i know which id be happier taking wounds with. dont increase the size of the units its just giving the enemy more kills.

the great thing about tusks is they are just enough of a threat to warrent shooting a unit at them, left unchecked they are fast enough to get at warmachines and mages aswell as seriously hold up units or block charges etc. one of the best distraction units in the game IMO and has stats which are impressive for the points.

im new to warhammer 8th myself, long time veteran of the game but only just getting back into the new edition with ogres, really like to hear some thoughts on the use of the firebelly. how are you kitting it out.

my thoughts are using it as a support caster to my slaughtermaster general rather than a second butcher with the ruby ring of ruin (MOAR FIRE!) and a dispel scroll. also had thoughts of using one on a flying carpet for a very mobile burninator..albeit quite a vaulnerable one.

Ive just got a ton of ogres and as a total newbie I have a few questions

1-does msu still work? Or should I just field units of 9-12 strong?

2-are ogres worth upgrading? Ie add hand weapons or ironfists?

3-i have 16 leadbelchers should I field them in units of 4? Or 8?

4-gnoblars? What do people think about them?

5-i am taking a tyrant despite the sm love. I want him to be a fighter. How should I equip him? I like the idea of the sword of bloodshed but im unsure

Thanks for anyone who can help me

    Field larger units, works better.

2-are ogres worth upgrading? Ie add hand weapons or ironfists?

IF. 5+, 6+ parry on cheaper ogres is golden.

3-i have 16 leadbelchers should I field them in units of 4? Or 8?

Both. Either can be fun. There still ogres carrying cannons!!

4-gnoblars? What do people think about them?

Still great tar pits and with trapper upgrade can be handy. Have seen msu of 10 with upgrade.

5-i am taking a tyrant despite the sm love. I want him to be a fighter. How should I equip him? I like the idea of the sword of bloodshed but im unsure

Lots of load outs for the big guy. Just mix and match to your taste. One that I have had fun with is Talisman of endurence, sword of strife, giantbreaker, E shield. Gives him 7 S6 attacks and a 4+ as, 5+ ws. Some throw in the greedy fist for another +1S and still gives you a 6+ ws. Still lots of other load outs....

Head over to the stronghold for any ogre questions you may have. Great bunch of fatbellies!!

It can but if you are inexperienced I would not go with it. MSU can surprise an opponent and if played correctly can work but is very hard to play correctly. I tend to run Ogre units 7 strong and add characters so they range between 7-9. That seems to work well.

At 10 points a wound the 2 points for the 5+ AS 6+ Parry is cheap. Most people upgrade.

You can't run 4 units of 4 until 3k points. For anything under that 4 in a 2x2 formation can do wonders, but 6 3x2 is just as good and I have heard of people running them 8 in 4x2 smashing things.

At less than 3K You probably won't run 16 LBs as there are many other things you might want to run for Special. If you did 4, 6, and 8 all work. 4 - Good for shooting a bit and then maneuvering for a flank charge. 6&8 - Shoot and then up front face smashing.

Cheap re-director. With the Trapper upgrade 10 of them are 50 points and they can be a nice little Barrier between your foes and your LBs. They won't block the LBs from shooting because they are so small, but will make people think twice about charging over there. You have to set them up so that they can't overrun into the LBs themselves such as angling them so an overrun does not carry the chargers into the LBs. Otherwise for 200 points you can slow down a flank advance most of the game if they don't have a ton of shooting to direct that way.

Tons of good builds out there, check the Stronghold for a thread on that specific thing.

    Gents,

Am having trouble facing off against Hordes. In my area, 3-4 blocks of 40-60 models is standard for every army. Facing faster armies, means that my units of 9 models usually lose 10+ wounds before I strike back.

At 2000 points I can't even make a list I am satisfied with.

What are you folks doing to make them more viable?
8th Edition Armies: Orcs & Goblins, Vampire Counts, Ogre Kingdoms, Lizardmen, Beastmen, WOC. Working on Wood Elves, Dark Elves, High Elves, Dwarves, Empire.

40K Armies: Ultramarines, Tyranids Working on Orks, Chaos Space Marines, Imperial Guard.

Make sure you get those defensive spells up and go for BIG units that can soak up the damage.

It might be boring but massive units of bulls is still the best bet. You might lose 10 wounds but they will lose 25

Also re-directors to slow them some of them units down and make them eat 10gnob trapper units as your main units take them on one at a time. Can you imagine how annoying it is to keep having someone throw a 21 point kitty in front of your unit for 3 turns straight. Never mind mixing in trappers....

Gnoblar Trappers. All those Dangerous Terrain checks tickle my funny bone.

Those don't really do much to be honest...

60 incoming troops charge the gnoblars, they are down to 50, wipe out the trappers, and move on to the ogres (probably just reforming if you placed them right).

Is a unit of trappers really worth killing 10 models? Is it worth the fact that your opponent now has VPs in the bank and you have nothing? Is it worth it even though you haven't reduced their attacks at all?

Well, I was implying that some form of redirection would be taking place, but point taken.

We have a few horde-cancelling options, as I see it: Scraplauncher (sheer fact that it uses a template, regardless of efficiency), Thundertusk, The Maw spell from our lore, and if you're lucky, Purple Sun of Jerk. Thin them out with Leadbelchers even.

I've also heard that Mournfangs are excellent in mowing down T3 foes. Scouting and Stubborn Maneaters could also hold them down long enough, Gorgers could threaten their rears, etc. But it all seems to boils down, as you mentioned earlier, to just making sure that when it does come down to a slug-fest, you have the advantage.

It's an uphill battle to be sure.

I have to say I agree. DT tests are neat - but it's a minimum of 50 points and if that's all the gnoblar unit is going to achieve before dying, have you actually even killed 50 points of enemy? Perhaps about even against big units or elites.

Right now I'm happy running a zero-gnoblar army and I'm not in any hurry to put them back in.
    ... and then I won.

Actually what the gnoblars accomplish is they kill1/6 of the enemy unit, often more than their cost AND they slow down the enemy deathstar for an entire turn since all they can do is charge the gnoblars and then reform after combat.

That is a whole turn (2 fighting sequances) their deathstar is out of the game.

This can be huge if the unit happens to cost 800pts etc.

If that's your true goal then the sabretusk is faster, easier to get into position, and cheaper.

Remember that killing 1/6th of a 800 point unit scores you 0 points.

Re: Ogre Kingdoms 8th Ed Tactics Recipe Book

That's what I've found. I tried to use 10-gnob units with trappers as redirectors and I found with M4 it was very hard to get them into position, even with a relatively static "gunline" ogre army. Sabres are so much faster and cheaper for that role.
    ... and then I won.

Re: Ogre Kingdoms 8th Ed Tactics Recipe Book

Ya...I still can't figure out why people love trappers so much. Dangerous Terrain tests hardly that scary, roll a 1 and take a wound? Trappers should have gotten the "Fail on 1 or 2" and they'd be worth taking...but as redirectors sabertusks are far better. You can get two and have extra points for the cost of one trapper unit.

I would only consider trappers in the occasion I had to tailor a list against a specific opponent with ridiculous army compositions (200 person units, giant knight blocks, etc). And i'll never find room for gnoblars (trappers or not) in a regular all-comers list.

I actually like that gnoblars are nearly "gone" from the book as a whole as this is not big orcs and little goblins..this is Ogre Kingdoms! Gnoblars are perfectly peppered in for minor comedic relief (scrap launcher, look-out-gnoblars, etc) and help cover areas that Ogre's can not. Still, ogre's are just better and don't need Gnoblars as fighting units.
