Back to Fantasy, settled on Chaos Dwarfs

    **Latest update**

I came very close to starting Fantasy with Skaven, but got put off by the number of ratmen to paint. So I decided to go for a smaller and slower force, the Dawi-Zharr.

    **Original Topic**

Got back into 40k this year and my space marine force has grown quite a bit, although not all painted yet :S

However I want to get back in to Fantasy. When I played before, it was the time of the old single pose plastic troop boxes. I had bits of various armies such as wood elves, chaos dwarves and beastmen.

So anyway was thinking about what I could collect and ended up on the forgeworld website and so it was between Skaven (vermin lord) and empire (Theodore Bruckner).

I was also interested to see how cheap the Skaven from the Island of Blood can be had on good ol' ebay.

So anyway onto a photo. I present you my first Skaven. A £3.24 (inc postage!) Warlord:

I also ordered the IoB warlock, so once that is painted, I'll move onto some troops. I'm leaning towards the idea of Clan Skyre force (Ikit and warlock engineers), with a focus on stormvermin, slaves and some of the Skyre warmachines.

angelofrage, I'm a fan of your marines so it's nice to see you also doing my favorite fantasy army. The warlord looks good. The armour and red cloth are very good. It may just be the picture but maybe a very thin edge highlight along the edges of the blades might make them look sharper.

The warlock arrived today and a quick evening infront of the TV produced this:

Still a few bits of touching up and the base to be finished. Don't think he looks too bad and is ok for table top quality. Tried some effects on the warpstone parts, which will be good practice for later on.

You got all of that done in an evening? Quick work, and it looks good. Well done.

Cool models, good work. I'm enjoying the green and the not-too-dark metals. Its nice to be able to actually see the details of the figures.

Nice insight about eBay - as long as you don't go for the REALLY popular perennial favourites, you can still get fantastic bargains on eBay. I have always thought about doing something like a £100 challenge - you know, collect the biggest/best army you can with £100 on eBay. There are certainly some bargains to be had on Elf stuff, Undead and O&G - maybe there are more to be had on Skaven too?

Re: Back to Fantasy, now with added evil dwarfs.

Well after a day trip to Warhammer World, I've pulled another U turn on my fantasy force.

Looking over the amount of skaven I would need to paint to be competitive, was daunting to say the least. Even the gorgeous FW vermin lord couldn't sway me (it looks much better in the flesh, though still wasn't painted).

In the end I went for...

I like the look of the new evil dwarfs so far and from what the staff was saying there would be more "troop" releases due to good sales on the current releases. They will also allow me to get a solid unit of troops to start with.

I'm looking for some magnetic bases for them and the undercoat is drying on the command squad as I type this. Hopefully I'll be able to get this lot done fairly quickly, ready for the end of the month and see what else is announced for them at GDUK.

The colour scheme I'm going to go for is dark metal, brass/bronze and a dark red trim. Trying to keep it darker than the old school multi coloured versions.

Thanks for reading and should have some painted pics up for you soon.

Quick update with a WIP shot of the command squad. Should give an idea of the colour scheme i'm going for:

Main metallics are done, so many little details on these figures, especially the beards. I'm not sure if they will be best painted brown with silver details, or grey with brass details. Any thoughts?

    Welcome back from the 41st!

Its more fun nowadays is the old Fantasy. Your skaven looked good but your Chaos Dwarves look even better.

I like the scheme, simple but effective. I am looking forward to seeing this progres.

    Good luck

Shame about the Skaven, but the CD are awsome too. I love the IG models but not the others which is why I decided not to go with them. The painting on them so far is great. I like the beards as they are (black). But out of your two options I'd go for grey on the Command squad and brown on the rest. My reasoning is that the command squad would most likely be older than the standard IG to have earned the right to be in the command squad.

I feel the same, love the Infernal guard (and the characters/taurus they've previewed) but not made my mind up yet on the warmachines.

As for the black beards, that's an option. I am just not 100% confident in making them look black, maybe just a dry brush highlight of grey?

The old school Chaos Dwarfs often had ginger beards, but not sure they'd fit in the look I was going for. Black maybe best after all!

Pity about the skaven as they looked great, but the chaos dwarfs look like they will be just as intresting . I look forward to more.

Skaven and all well and good, but Chaos Dwarfs are better.

Re: Back to Fantasy, with Skaven.

I drybrush highlight of grey would work. If you don't like the look of it afterwards it's not any hassle to go over the beard with another colour (your grey or brown idea). I'd stay away from the ginger beards, not that I have anything against ginger hair, but I think it would be more suited to normal dwarfs than Chaos Dwarfs.

Re: Back to Fantasy, with Skaven.

Well, for the beards, I think black is the way forward.

I've done a very light drybrush of adeptus battlegrey. It seems ok, but the details are pretty tiny and hard for me to pick out.

I've also always struggled with flesh (hence me liking the full plate on these troops!), so i'm not sure how his face has turned out.

Also on the topic of fantasy, i've found this model from a while back. It's suffering from battle damage and missing spikes/horns

Seems silver/red/gold/brass are my colours I like and (at least think) I can paint.

Hope to get the first lot of troops (doing them in batches of 5) undercoated and base colours done over the weekend.

    Thanks for reading

Re: Back to Fantasy, settled on Chaos Dwarfs

Well bit more done before the light went:

Happy with the scheme, although they are a bit of a pain to line up on the 20mm bases. I've got some magnetic ones on order, so will be making a couple (2x12 and 6x4) of movement trays for them, once I can find the right lining for them.

Thinking the bases will be a fairly plain ash grey, for the Darklands / Howling wastes they come from. Maybe larger bases (taurus for example) can have something a bit more special on the base.

The more I look at those excellent Chaos Dwarf figures, the more I think you could put them on round bases and use the as chaos marines in 40k.

Really liking the effect you've created on those figures.
