The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 12 (FINAL THREAD)

Welcome to the Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011!

What is the Tale all about?
The aim of the Tale of Painters is to get an army fully painted within the next 12 months.

For most 40k armies the size will be somewhere between 1000 and 2000 points, but you can go higher if you want to (and you're crazy enough)! BFG and Epic armies will be slightly different, but as long as you choose an appropriate sized army for your game system then there's no problem.

Once you've chosen your army, your target is to paint roughly 10% of your army each month. For example, if you've chosen a 2000 point army then your monthly target would be 200 points. The Tale runs for one year (September 2010 to August 2011), so if you stick to your 10% monthly target then you'll only need to paint for 10 months of the year.

To cover the months when you can't/don't paint, you get 2 'Jokers'. You can play a 'Joker' at any time (provided you haven't used them both up!), which essentially means that you don't have to meet your target for that month. They can used for real life events (such as births, deaths, marriages, exams, holidays) or if you're just having a bad/slow month. If you use a 'Joker' then feel free to post a suitable image instead (a Joker or something funny).

What is this thread all about?
This thread is to be used as the completed work thread for August, and therefore the Tale.

Feel free to post any pictures of what you've painted this Tale, army lists, background stories, battle reports, questions, and comments on anyone else's posts. You can post as little or as much as you like.

    Frequently Asked Questions
Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : Unfortunately you are now too late! Don't worry though, the Tale of Painters will be starting again very soon (September), so keep a look out for the 'sign-up' thread.

Q : Can I paint more than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, and it's great to get ahead. BUT, we would like you only to post 10% (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 10% per month. For example, if you're painting 2000 points that means 200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc. This way you won't depress those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, but we would like you to try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example, if you're painting 2000 points and you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character/tank/unit?
A : This happens a lot. If your character/tank/unit is over 10% of your army you could simply paint him/it/them over two months (the sort of time your general/tank/expensive unit deserves!). For example, last year my monthly target was 200 points and I painted a Stompa (600 points). I split painting the model into (roughly) 3 months of 200 points, posting new WIP shots each month.

Q : Do I have to use my 2 'Jokers' during the Tale?
A : No, you don't have to use them at all. If you can manage to paint/post for the full 12 months then congratulations, you'll have exceeded your target and truly embodied the spirit of the Tale!

Q : If I 'catch up' with my points, can I 'buy back' a 'Joker'?
A : Yes, just let me know in your monthly post if you would like to do this. For example, if you have a target of 200 points per month and have played one of your 'Jokers', you could 'buy back' your 'Joker' if you can manage to make up the 'Jokered' 200 points at some point. This could be from painting 400 points one month, painting 300 points over two months, or just making up smaller amounts here and there (as long as you're back on track).

Q : What's with the D6 roll in your post?
A : The D6 roll was an idea introduced in the last Tale to help ensure that everyone gets some comments on their work. If everyone rolls a D6 when they post (I use the D&D dice roller if I don't have a D6 to hand), then we should have six roughly equal groups each month. Then, if you comment on those people who rolled the same as you everyone will receive some feedback. So, if you roll a 1, comment on all of the other 1's, if you rolled a 2, comment on all of the other 2's, and so on. Of course, if you have the time/want to, there's nothing stopping you from commenting on anyone's/everyone's work.

I'll start off by posting an entry for August. Feel free to copy my post to use as a template (edited to suit your army), but as long as you post your Monthly total, Total to date, Unit(s) painted and a picture then that's fine.

If anyone has any other questions, please direct them to me (misterboff).

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 12 (FINAL THREAD)

    misterboff's Dark Eldar: August 2011 (D6 roll = 1)

MONTHLY TOTAL: 285 POINTS (monthly target: 200 points)
TOTAL TO DATE: 2001 POINTS (target to date: 2000 points)
    #JOKERS USED: 2#

BACKGROUND/THEME: "Wych Cult of the Blade Denied"
The Blade Denied is an elder Wych House that specialises in the art of using their foe's weapons against themselves. The irony of seeing a warrior impaled upon his own blade is always a favourite of this cult, for it shows that even a weapon cannot be trusted.

    UNIT(S):
5 Beastmasters (inc. Venom Blade) - 65 points
    10 Blade-legged Helspiders (count as Khymerae) - 120 points
    4 Razorwing Flocks - 60 points
Donorian Clawed Fiend - 40 points

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS:
The Beastmasters are simply Hellions with bare Reaver heads and a mixture of weapons (Raider/Venom daggers, Venom weighted flails, Raider spears, and a Scourge Venom Blade). The Blade-legged Helspiders (count as Khymerae) are Forest Goblin Spiders minus the Riders. I was going to mount them on Bike bases, but the detailed bases that they came with (with cobwebs and little spiders on them) were too cool not to use. The Razorwing Flocks are actually the leaves from the Citadel Wood with spare Hellion flying stems mounted on 40mm round bases (which is shamelessly looted from SpeedFreek's thread), and the Donorian Clawed Fiend is an Island of Blood Rat Ogre with a 'Chaos' head (from the Apocalypse Squadron Command upgrade sprue), Tyranid Warrior Rending Claws and plenty of Green Stuff fur mounted on a 40mm round base (to try to look more like the original picture from the 3rd edition rulebook).

    PAINTING/BASING:
I'm roughly following the painting guide from WD371 for the Beastmasters, but substituting purple in where necessary. I'm roughly following the painting guide from WD374 for the Helspiders, adapting it where necessary for the Flocks and Fiend. The bases are simply Astronomicon Grey followed by Citadel Snow.

    Silver: Boltgun/Badab/Mithril
    Bronze: Tin Bitz/Devlan/Dwarf
    Black: Chaos/Adeptus/Badab
    Eldar Flesh: Space Wolves+Tallarn/Devlan/SWG+Dheneb/Rotting
    Flayed Skin: Tallarn(+Vomit/Dark)/Devlan/Tau Sept Ochre/Rotting
    Purple: Hormagaunt/Leviathan/Liche
    Blue: Mordian/Asurmen/Enchanted/Ice
    Green: Knarloc/Thraka/Goblin/Scorpion
    Yellow: Iyanden/Gryphonne/Bad Moon
    Orange: MSO/Baal/Vomit/Blazing
    Pink: Mechrite+Dheneb/Baal/Mechrite+Skull
    White: Astronomican/Badab/Skull

    STILL TO DO:
    Nothing.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: I think my models will stand out from the official models (and all of the conversions based on Dire Wolves/Flying Rippers), and am very pleased with them all - probably the high of the Tale for me. Also, as much as I like the official Khymerae models, they would have cost nearly FIVE times what I paid for my Blade-legged Helspiders!
Lows: I originally ordered some Bloodletter heads off Ebay, but they were ridiculously small when I tried them out for my Fiend so they turned out to be a waste of money. Luckily I ordered the Apocalypse Squadron Command upgrade sprue when I ordered my Webway Portal (to get free postage), and remembered the 'Chaos' head from that.

    NEXT MONTH:
A new Tale, with a return to my beloved Deathskulls...

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 12 (FINAL THREAD)

Dark Eldar 1500 points: August 2011

MONTHLY TOTAL: 135 POINTS (monthly target: 150 points)
TOTAL TO DATE: 1522 POINTS (My army composition changed)
    JOKERS USED: 2

Obviously, this is not my complete army. I will carry on painting my Dark Eldar in next years Tale.

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
The Kabal of the Bloody Tongue

    UNIT(S):
Talos Pain Engine (135 pts with upgrades)

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS:
    Straight out of the box.

    PAINTING/BASING:
I want my Dark Eldar to have a neon/Tron feel to them.
The armour is mostly dark blue (Necron Abyss) with light blue (Ice Blue) highlights. Some plates are painted silver.
Glyphs and hair are bright green (Scorpion Green) highlighted to white.
I'm painting the Dark Eldar's skin as I would bone. Dheneb Stone base with a Devlan Mud wash. Highlighted with more Dheneb Stone up to white.
The bases are bits of slate and sand. The slate is painted Codex Grey and drybrushed with Fortress Grey. The sand is painted Snakebite Leather and drybrushed with Dheneb Stone and then given a wash of Devlan Mud. Finally I added some static grass.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Talos is one of my favourite GW models and was loads of fun to paint.
Lows: Gluing the Talos together before painting. Even after 23 years in the hobby I still make this mistake.

    NEXT MONTH:
A new tale with the same army. Bring it on!

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 12 (FINAL THREAD)

Zark the Damned and the aggressive expansion of Waaaagh Kargrak: August 2011

    MONTHLY TOTAL: 140 + 135 + 135 = 410 Points
    TOTAL TO DATE: 3651 + 410 = 4061 Points

BACKGROUND/THEME: Waaagh Kargrak is a largely Bloody Fang Tribe currently undergoing aggressive expansion into Imperial space following the Green Kroosade.

More Sunz join in this month, plus reinforcements for the Bad Moons!

    UNIT(S):
10 Slugga Boyz with Nob, Bosspole, Power Klaw, Trukk, Red Paint Job = 140pts
3 Deathkoptas with Twin Rokkit Launchas = 135pts
3 Deathkoptas with Twin Rokkit Launchas = 135pts

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS:
Mostly stock AOBR Boyz and Koptas. Nob is a converted AOBR Nob with a Biker Power Klaw.

Trukk has been converted a bit to look stripped down, the back plates and roll cage were left off and the gunner emplacement replaced with a standing gunner from the Battlewagon kit. Both crew use Biker heads.

    PAINTING/BASING:
Again not much new. Dark red clothing on the Evil Sunz boyz is simply Mechrite Red with a Devlan Mud wash.

NEXT MONTH: Decide which 'Tale of' I'm joining for next season...

    PICS:

    First up, last month's Bikers:

    Then, the Trukkers:

    Koptas away!

Finally, a couple of army shots. Decided to show off the whole army, not just stuff from the tale:

Quick diagram showing off the Klanz. Shows a remarkable lack of Goff considering I originally wanted a Goff army! Guess I know what to add next...
Zark not believe in democracy. We go left!

    djc's beastman guard

    MONTHLY TOTAL: 270 points
    TOTAL TO DATE: 2430 points

    UNIT(S):
3x Scout Sentinel with Autocannon - 120 points
Leman Russ Battle Tank - 150 points

    STILL TO DO:
    Finish off the bases

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Finishing the tale \o/ and painting more than I pledged to \o/
Lows: Not actually getting all the units in my original planned 1500 painted.

I'll post a complete army shop later in the month - I'd like to nip to GW to take some shots on a decent gaming table.

Oh, and I also noticed post picture taking that I'd not done the lenses on the Sentinels' Autocannon - this has been rectified!

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 12 (FINAL THREAD)

Well it feels good to be done! I'm looking forward to seeing all the finishers full armies too.

    Perplexiti’s Space Wolves: 2011

    MONTHLY TOTAL: 145

    TOTAL TO DATE: 2047

    JOKERS USED: 0

    BACKGROUND/THEME: Ragnar Blackmane’s Great Company.

    UNIT(S): 8 Blood Claws.

BUILD/CONVERSIONS: The Wolfguard is the classic 2nd ed Blood Claw sergeant. There's also a couple of 2nd ed Blood Claw minis in there too. Apart from that standard 3rd/4th Space Wolf plastics with a couple of chaos chain swords.

PAINTING/BASING: Basecoated black, then a Fenris grey coat, with very heavy drybrushes of shadow grey then spacewolf grey. The metal bits were chainmail with a badab black wash. I forget the name of the yellow I've been using for the lenses, but it's put over a iyanden darksun base.

STILL TO DO: Nothing but the basing, I've decided to sit down at the end of the tale and base all of them at once.

HIGHS AND LOWS: No real lows, but no highs either. It was a struggle to get these guys finished and I probably could have done a better job.

    NEXT TALE: Terminators.

I have just got back from holiday so my strangely Inquisitorial submission will be up along with a full army shot. I am borrowing a DSLR camera from a friend for the final army shot!

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 12 (FINAL THREAD)

So, this month I chose to paint an Inquistor to accompany my Imperial Guard army because for about a week straight I was in the mood to paint single models only. They are being used in accordance with Codex: Daemonhunters, rather then Codex: Grey Knights which I really dislike. I am really pleased with the results, particularly the Acolyte.

This submission concludes my Tale Of 40k Painters and I am really thankful for the help and advice from all who took part and especially Misterboff! I wont be taking part next year, but I'll do my best to drop in and give comments.

    Models Painted this month:
Inquisitor Lord- Needle Pistol, Anoited Weapon, Digital Weapons, Icon of the Just.
    - Word of the Emperor, Holocaust. 140
    Acolyte- Power Weapon. 23
    Familiar. 6
    Ogryn. 40

Total Points This Month: 140+23+6+40= 209
    Total Points Overall: 1795+209= 2004
    Total Jokers Used: 2

    Inquisitor picture:

    Acolyte picture:
Waiting for my sister to upload from her camera.
    Familiar picture:
No picture, its pointless on its own!
    Ogryn picture:

    Group shot:

    Army shot: To follow.

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 12 (FINAL THREAD)

    Mini77's Dead Suns: August 2011

    MONTHLY TOTAL: 655 Points
    TOTAL TO DATE: 5031 Points
    #JOKERS USED: 2#

    BACKGROUND/THEME: Dead Suns Space Marines

DIY Space Marine chapter. I have units and characters from across all the Marine books (except Space Wolves) so I can switch at will for different play styles and models.

    UNIT(S):

Imperial Guard Veteran Squad; Flamer, Missile Launcher
    Armoured Sentinel; Plasma Cannon, Searchlight
Death Company Rhino; Storm Bolter, Extra Armour
Assault Marine Sergeant; Power Sword, Bolt Pistol
Librarian; Epistolary, Bolt Pistol, Force Weapon
Sergeant Chronus; Servo Arm, Bolt Pistol
    Twin-linked Lascannon turret for Razorback
Predator; Autocannon, Heavy Bolter, Extra Armour, Pintle-mounted Storm Bolter

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS:

The IG have been painted to match the colour scheme of the marines whilst I've been playing around with a Tyrant's Legion army list. They're standard Cadian minis with German gasmask heads from Westwind.

Sergeant Chronus had all the Ultramarines icons removed (pain in the backside) and is sitting in the Predator, though seeing as I've been using either Blood Angels or Tyrant's Legion lists for a bit I doubt he'll see use anytime soon sadly.

The Librarian is made up of quite a few different minis and was loads of fun to convert and paint. I now have seven Librarians though.....

    PAINTING/BASING:
My usual technique of basecoat, shade, extreme highlight pretty much across the board here.

    STILL TO DO:
Guardsmen, Librarian and Assault Sarge need basing and varnishing, tanks are done.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Pleased with the markings on the Death Company Rhino. First time I've used masking tape.
    Lows: Off-field issues.

    CONCLUSIONS:
I'm amazed I've been able to paint 5000 points of miniatures in 12 months, especially since I broke a finger twice during that period. My initial commitment was 1500 points, upped to 3000 and then finally 5000. Bit crazy really. I'm going to get some army shots done over the weekend after I've based these last few models. I'll also be participating in the 2011/12 Tale as well, continuing the same army, though this time aiming for a little more modest 1500 points and I'll likely take Jokers for the first two months to take some time off.

Thank you all for your support and encouragement over the past year, and I look forward to the next one!

I have completed my obligation for the tale.
Razormasticators 75th Logres Prime Ice Drakes IG

    Total Painting for August-September: 350

    Units:
1 Vendetta Gunship #78, sister to the previous Vendetta in my army. This one has seen more action, is a bit more weathered and has been retrofitted.
    Manticore

Some other ongoing WIP shots of the finalized Rough Rider assembly, a Valkyrie (with painted interior from over a year ago) and a Chimera in progress.

    Painting:
Same as always…. If you really want to know at this point just ask.

    Basing:
    Standard Approach. Winter Thaw…

    Still to Do:
    Dull cote

    Highs and Lows:

    High:
Getting 2 more of my multitude of vehicles done

    Lows:
Not getting as many infantry done for this tale as I should. I still have so- so many to paint at this point.

This army is ongoing, and whilst I will be focusing on my Orks for the next tale, I will be continuing to work on this army as well.

Comments and an army shot to follow after the 10th of the month.

    Irondog's Orks (and Grey Knights)

Total Painting for August '11: 100 points of Orks

Total Army Size: 1925 points (Orks - 1285 pts / Grey Knights - 640 pts)

    Die Roll: 4

    Units:
Well, I only managed to do 100 points for the Tale this month, so I missed my goal by about 75 points. I painted up an old school metal Dreadnought. As cool as the new plastic kit is, there's something endearing about the ol' walking trash can.

The reason I only got 100 points done?

Well... have a look at the pictures to see why.

    Conversions:
Nothing major. I added a grot rigger and some tank bitz to the base, but I left the model pretty much stock.

    Painting:
The metal area are Boltgun Metal drybrushed over a black undercoat. The red area are multiple layers of Blood Red, and the gold areas are Shining Gold washed with Devlan Mud.

    Basing:
Bestial Brown followed by drybrushes of Bubonic Brown and Bleached Bone.

    Still to Do:
Another 75 points worth of Orks... after I get some of this commission work out of the way

    PICTURES

    Here's the Dread.

... and the reason I didn't get the rest painted. Over 600 points of Blood Angels for a commission gig.

Hopefully I'll get an army shot up early next week. Until then, just paste the Dread into the army shot from last month.
The Orks are the pinnacle of creation. For them, the great struggle is won. They have evolved a society which knows no stress or angst. Who are we to judge them? We Eldar who have failed, or the Humans, on the road to ruin in their own turn? And why? Because we sought answers to questions that an Ork wouldn't even bother to ask! we see a culture that is strong and despise it as crude. - Uthan the Perverse, Eldar Philosopher

Army shot as promised. Unfortunately, I won't be able to transport the army any time within the next couple of weeks so you'll have to make do with a plain background.

I'd like to say thanks to everyone who took part for keeping me motivated - It's been fun tracking the progress of all the armies, and nice to see the end product. Special thanks to misterboff for organising everything too!

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 12 (FINAL THREAD)

First of all, well done to everyone who has made it to the end of the Tale this year - give yourselves a huge pat on the back! There are lots of fantastic armies, and you should all be proud of what you've got finished.

Also, thanks to everyone who thanked me. I appreciated being nominated to take over the running of the Tale, and enjoy doing it and seeing all of your lovely models!

@Fanny Crowbar: As a fellow Dark Eldar painter, I've loved watching your army develop, and look forward to seeing what you get up to in the next Tale. Also, your Talos is brilliant, the skin tone really goes well with your neon colours.

@Zark the Damned: With Orks being my main army, I've really enjoyed seeing your army develop too. You've certainly managed to paint an insane amount of stuff in just one year! The yellow detailing on your Evil Sunz this month suits them perfectly.

@djc: Great work as usual this month. I like that you've got such a great variety of poses out of the Sentinel kit. The plain background for the army shot actually helps the models to stand out. Loads of Beastmen and loads of vehicles - looks superb!

@perplexiti: Another good looking bunch of mixed edition Space Wolves. I think the eclectic nature of your army really matches the individuality of the Space Wolves. The army shot is very impressive too, that's a fair amount of Space Marines!

@bigcheese76: A bit of a twist at the end, but it's a good one! I always liked the Fabius Bile ("Fabulous Billy") model, and your little converisons fit in nicely with his look. I love the old 'fist in the air' Ogryn too. The army shot is great too - that's a whole lot of armour!

@Mini77: And the award for most points painted goes to... Mini77! An outstanding achievement to paint over 5000 points in just one year, and you're continuing the army in the next Tale too? What a hero! Maybe your newest Librarian could be the seventh son of a seventh son...

@razormasticator: Lovely work on your vehicles once again razor, you've been consistantly excellent throughout your time in the Tales. I'm sure all that painting blue will come in handy for your Deathskulls too! Your IG army must be getting pretty huge by now (looking forward to the army shot)...

@Irondog: Wow. Another phenomenal paintjob for yourself, and plenty more for a client! I love the little Grot scampering around the base - is he fixing the Dread or looting the remain of its latest victim?

@pudsey098: Great work on the Boarboyz, (in particular I like the one on the left pulling the wheelie) and the finished Dread looks suitably killy too! A very interesting army shot too, with a huge variety of units - good to see you're joining us again for the next Tale.
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.
