Kaleb Daark and the Warhost of Malal: Beyond the ToFP

Hello, all and welcome to my second Plog. The first one didn’t go so well – mainly, because I realised that hundreds of Skaven slaves don’t really make for a diverse and varied blog to keep people interested, and nor do they make for a diverse and varied painting schedule. So instead of hundreds and hundreds of posts of near identical purple rats, I decided to give up and have a) a semi-painted skaven army and b) a life.

Also, last year, I signed up to the Tale of Fantasy Painters, in the Men’s Category for Warriors of Chaos. Unfortunately, due to a combination of moving house and a new job, I dropped out of the Tale pretty quickly. At least, that was my excuse.

In reality, I think that the problem was that I was trying to accomplish too much in too short a space of time. I had very grandiose ideas of what I wanted to accomplish with the army, and I didn’t have any of the models, or tools, or time to actually get into it.

Anyway, due to some recent good fortune on e-bay, a slight salary increase and some serious upgrading of my hobby work-station I have decided to re-enter the ToFP for 2011-12 with the same army, but with some more realistic ambitions.

Unfortunately, for my first post I am only going to rehash old ground (but at least it is a taster of things to come!). Below are some pictures of my entries for the first two months of ToFP last year. Part of the reason I dropped out last year was the fact I was trying to get through the bulk of my core in the first two months – which at 5 points a model meant 40 Marauders a month!

This was totally unachievable (for me – I am a solicitor which means irregular hours and mild alcoholism to get over ****** clients. Alcohol and painting miniatures don’t go very well together unfortunately, although they do go together better than alcohol and removing flash with a hobby knife, or lots of alcohol and trying to have sex with your very sober and possibly menstruating girlfriend) so I lost heart and gave up.

So below are the Marauders I did manage to paint. The theme of the army is Malal. For those who don’t know Malal is one of the “anti-Chaos” Chaos gods – or more famously known as the Chaos God of (alleged) Copyright Infringement (the rights to the Malal god, and his best known Champion Kaleb Daark, were fiercely contested by the original author of the background).

However, I very much like the idea of Chaos destroying Chaos and it has given me some really good ideas for conversions… but more of that later. I have typed up some mini-background for the army somewhere. I'm sure you could find it with a little search, but I'll probably infiltrate it later in the Plog.

(Also, is there a different abbreviation to "Plog" - it makes me think of POGs, which of themselves remind me of school. Unfortunately, I went to a boys-only public school in the English countryside, and as I was the kid who collected small figurines and wasn't really into mutual buggery they were very, very dark times for me. On the other hand, "project" is a really good Scrabble word and does make me think about Elecution lessons - which as our vocal-coach was one of only three females in the boys-only school (along with the cook (too old) and the nurse (too antiscepticy) - were a very, very good time for me.)

Anyway - this project log is supposed to be about photographs rather than trying to get cheap psycho-therapy, so let's get some JPEGs up.

Here are some lovely, 5th Ed Maurauders. Note particularly, the way that GW has not yet realised that the skull to figurine ratio must be at least 8:1. Note also, the lovely black and white division of the armour in the style of Malal. Please try not to notice the awful, awful photographs. I am working on this. However, the pictures are now a year old. Imagine it is sepia.

Here are the same Marauders from a slightly different angle. This is to fill space because it is my first post and I feel one photograph probably isn't enough.

Finally, here is a close-up of the Command Group. This is a 5th Ed. Chaos Exalted Champion. Although, he has got a lot more skulls than anyone else he simply doesn't have enought in 8th Ed. to justify such a position in my Army so he has been downgraded to Unit Champion. That's hard-lines, but the Will of Chaos is Fickle. (Also, I don't believe those skulls are real. They are far too small. Unless they are children's skulls, but that's a bit sick).

Well, that's it for now. I hope you are well (I am fine) and you like my pictures.

I like that unit it is tasty. So how are you planning to go about the tale this time round? I have entered and like yourself having cheap 5 point core is looking like a big challenge as I'm not the best batch painter. I'm splitting my big units into different months with stuff to break them up ie: 20 halberdiers, some knights and then the other 20 halberdiers.

Well good luck with the tale

PS: Looking forward to seeing that Warshrine
Marius Leitdorf is not dead, I bumped into him in Tesco last week.

Yak: Apologies for not responding to your post before - I hadn't even realise I had responses, but thank you for being my first poster! In order to over-come the inevitable 5-point core fatigue I have decided to:

    a) enter the 100 point Boys version of the tale; and
    b) do at least one "high value" minature per month. This month I am going to paint my "Chaos Ogre" champion which comes in at a nice 70 points (meaning I only need 6 maurauders to make it up to 100).

As for batch painting, I've never really got the hang of it. I always find that (no matter now much I promise myself that I am going to do every model properly), I find that I am getting bored/tired my model five of the batch and let my painting slip. I'd much rather paint one model at a time and get it right. Unfortunately, that means I don't have many fully painted armies!

On to today's post. One of the things I like about Chaos armies is the idea that anyone can convert to worshipping a Chaos god and move up through the ranks and I want to try and represent this in my army. I am planning three big units of Marauders for my 3000 point list, a unit of Warriors and a unit of Chosen. Each of these units will represent a different stage in the progression of Chaos: the immediate convert who has just pledged their soul > the fanatical worshipper who sacrifices everything > the marauder solid in their belief trying to prove their worth > the warrior the pinacle of humankind > chosen, the finest of Chaos on the cusp of Glory/Daemonhood/Spawn.

My first proper post of the Plog (and my first newly painted models) represent the very, very first step on the road that these unit will represent! I recently bought a set of the "Mordheim Angry Mob" along with some of the other Empire "collectors" models. I intend to use these to represent a unit Marauders with Shields, and the very first step on the road to Chaos. I imagine that the mayor or priest of the town has convinced the villagers to follow Malal in vengence for some raid by Chaos on their village!

These are the two youngest of the village. I would note for the record, that my Girlfriend's name is Anwen, her birthday fall on the 18th and she is often a very grumpy girl! I like to think of myself as occassionally naughty. Basically, it's a semi-autobiographical work!

Finally, this is a photo that went a bit wrong, but which I like to thing makes it look like a Hollywood "glamour" shot!

Well, I'm back at work tomorrow and it's looking like being a busy week. I'll try to post again mid-week. I am currently trying to batch-paint 10 figures that will represent the "second stage" of the progression, but as I said above - I'm not very good at batch painting and the models were already rather badly painted when I bought them... ah, well, excuses, excuses.

Great start to a blog, your painting is really good, you've got a great choice of miniatures, and most of all your writing is excellent and incredibly fun to read. Subscribing.

    Keep it up,

Lovely little diorama you have there.

Subscribing now to await the inevitable awesomeness of this plog!! (It's really really good now, but you only started this four days ago, so I'll wait for entropy and / or boredom to try to creep in).

Looking forward to seeing Kaleb Daark himself. I was huge fan of the comic back in those early days of the Citadel Journal.

Re: Kaleb Daark and the Warhost of Malal: Beyond the ToFP

Oh my god, oh my god, oh my GOD! I have subscribers, and a rating and, oh, everything. I’d like to thank my father-in-law for his phallus-based inspiration, and my girlfriend for still loving me even after I painted a sulky little girl to look like her, and my agent: “I love you, Jerry!”. It’s all too much.

Seriously though – thanks! And compliments from people whose work I have previously liked and whose painting I respect. Niiiice. (Please do rate me and comment. Provided you say something pleasantly (even if it isn't pleasant!) I guarantee you a response!)

@BeatTheBeat: I was very upset when you decided to stop your Savage Orc army and sell it off? If I had had hundreds and hundreds of pounds lying around I would clearly have taken it off your hands. If I manage to capture half the character in my army as you did in yours I will consider it a job well done.

@Purplebeard: I’m glad you like it. I know you’re a fan of classic models (love your WHQ stuff by the way, especially the noble), and I have been scouring e-bay to get as many as possible into this army, so hopefully there will be a few more pieces you’ll approve of.

@Saulot: It’s not so much entropy or boredom – I’m always keen to paint a few more models! It’s more that life overtakes the hobby and I just don’t set aside enough time to paint. If I can just squeeze in a bit more brush-time, hopefully awesomeness will indeed ensue.

    @PrecintOmega
: Those comic books are exactly the reason that I wanted to start a Malal army! Walpurgis and even Malal himself may be making an appearance later on… As for Kaleb, that was a great miniature, if only I owned one… or two…

    -----------

Today’s update is only an update rather than a finished product. It’s another two models for the “first step” unit of marauders – the villagers who have sold their souls to Malal for revenge on the Chaos raiders who destroyed their homes. It’s one of the Collectors’ models from when 8th Ed. was released last year – the Dancing Bear.

Now, moral objections to glorifying medieval animal cruelty aside – I think it is a fantastically cool model and I am still trying to do it justice so this is definitely a work in progress – the bears’ fur still needs highlighting, and I’d like to try some more tartan on the drum. There’s also few highlights that need finishing.

I’m particularly pleased with the tartan on the hurdy-man’s bonnet, but I might re-do it from scratch to make it a little better.

Unfortunately, my photo-fu was weak today, so there is a bit of a red glare. Nonetheless, here are some WIP for your consideration.

No wonder you can't finish hundreds of skaven. Anyway, good work, and a nice diverse collection of models so far.

Woah, huge praise there mate, thanks! You'll be happy to hear though that nobody wanted to cash out for it, so Wuddat and his tribe are still lying dormant in a cosy bag, awaiting A) the end of recession so somebody will buy them, or B) an almighty return to match that of the final Star Wars film.

Oh, and you're way on your way to achieve "half the character", to say the least.

    Cheers,
    BTB

Dancing Bear is coming along nicely!

Testing, testing - is this thing on? I've finally come back to my project and am just seeing whether this post will resurrect the thread, or if I need to start a new one. If it does, please expect WIP pictures of the Greatest Daemon of Malal, Ba'lekor, Prince of Shadows by the weekend.

Fluffwise Be'lakor isn't a daemon of Malal, but I still want to see your work on him.

Most eager to see your Kaleb Daark though.

@snyggejygge - Reverse BE'LAKor's name... then take a look around the internet.

I will also be bring Kaleb out soon (and I've also restored the classic Skrag), but I need to get my painting and modelling skills back up to scratch first! I'd forgotten how hard pinning was - to the extent that I almost wished in was Fineca- ahahahaha. Sorry. Nearly kept a straight face. Pics to follow.

It's a theory or even a conspiracy, fluffwise Malal don't exist anymore, Malal was gone long before Be'lakor was even thought of, if it suits you, then go ahead, however Be'lakor isn't even hinted at being a daemonprince of another god anywhere, just a really powerful daemonprince, who also happens to be the first one. You do whatever you want with your army ofcourse, but that thing with the name is far fetched, as is the rest of the article, I am still looking forwards to see your progress though, I myself have always been a big fan of Malal ever since I heard of him.
