My blog with Necrons : http://40ktravel.blogspot.com/
Noted, thanks. So far I've received two votes grin, one vote faceless.
Thank you. I'm closing in on my last few bits, so it shouldn't be too long before I can actually get to work on it. I haven't posted much about the Horrors before today, but I'm posting the steps now. The steps are simple, but the paints make it difficult.
Thanks, I've never really cared for the naked aspect of the Deceiver, where her's painted all one color, so it was cool to see him broken up to look like he's actually in an outfit.
Thanks, I should be hearing about how I placed in the contest today or tomorrow.
This weekend was eventful at least. Aside from finally breaking into Skyward Sword, I've made some major headway with the Horrors. Each of them are up to the final stage of skin highlights, so they should be done by the weekend tournament.
Here are the skin steps 2-5:
Honestly, the steps are simple. It's layers of a 50/50 combination of Fenris Gray and Necron Abyss, with increasing amounts of white. Followed by a watered down wash of Asurman Blue (Careful, a little goes a long way to darkening), then lighter highlights.
It's a good scheme for a single mini, but I wouldn't actually recommend this for troops. The Necron Abyss separates from the rest of the mix which can cause some uneven colors, and it dries several shades darker compared to when it's wet, so it made it really tough to match the original model. That being the case, the nine new models seem darker than the test mini. I'm hoping once the highlights go in and the rest of the model is painted it'll lighten it up considerably. Were I to do it all over again I think I'd have used Regal Blue and Shadow Gray.
I hope to have all nine done by the Saturday tournament. Once they're done that only leaves five big models: The Bloodcrushers, a Daemon Prince, and the Bloodthirster.

Small update: My Deceiver model came in first place at the painting competition, so I was the happy recipient of an Ogre Kingdoms Battalion box. Kinda makes me wish I actually played OKs.

Thanks. One of my buddies has an OK army, so if he wants it I'll sell it to him. If not, I'll ebay it.
I got my hands on another set of Talos tentacles, and bluetacked it all together again. I've decided his backstory (if Daemons even need backstories) is that it was a Keeper of Secrets that possessed and took over a Talos Pain Engine, which allows it to exist outside of the warp.
I think the two tentacle pods side by side work perfectly. With a little greenstuffing and some decoration (probably knives and chains hanging from his belt) it'll blend together nicely.
I've decided the shoulder spike needs to go. He has so many tentacles going every which way a huge spike doesn't add anything to the model. Instead I'll greenstuff a gem into the sockets of the shoulder armor. Should add a nice detail without being a distraction.
Another thing I think needs to be changed has to do with the tentacles. On the back of each Talos tentacle is a metallic spine that runs down the length. To me, it's too mechanical and doesn't really belong on a Daemon. My idea would be to trim away the cord that connects each tentacle section that way it would look more like a bit of exposed bone rather than mechanical ribbing. Here's a photoshop comparison so you can see what I'm talking about.
Still haven't quite decided on the head. I'm currently leaning towards the faceless mask you see above, just because of the issue I'm having with the "psycho grin" head. Plus the talos head would fit well with the background story of a possessed Talos. More food for thought I suppose.

Damn sweet
Thank you much. There will be more in time.
Mini update: My Daemon army made it's first appearance at the local tourney, & I didn't fail horribly (which I consider a win). I lost the first game against Space Marines (Never ever ever charge SS/TH Termis), and handily won the second game against Mechanized Blood Angels, which was a big win since Daemons do not do well against tank-heavy lists. My army got a lot of attention, and one of the players commissioned me to paint his Space Wolf HQ. I'm not sure how much to charge him, since the mini is already built, based, & primed, but it sounded like he was willing to pay a lot more than I was expecting.
I'm just about done with my Horrors. Here they are with their completed jaws/bellies. This was pretty easy, i just started with Fenris Gray, and added more and more white to the mix
While I was at it I started working on the Changeling as well. Just the arms so far, painted the same Fenris/White mixing.
I'm not sure why, but the initial basecoat of paint does not want to stick. Maybe it's the fact i didn't wash the resin, or that I primed it when it was cold outside. I'm making it work, it's just a pain.

Wow, brilliant conversions and paintjobs. I love your painting style.

I appreciate you saying so. I always enjoy feedback.
News everyone! I finally finished my horrors today. I pushed to get them done just because an associate is commissioning me to paint up some space marines and I don't want any distractions while working on them. Additionally a friend bought me a Lord of Change mini for my birthday. I don't use one in my list, but I might have to make room for him
As far as my current list is concerned all I have left to complete are the last Daemon Prince, my Bloodthirster, and three Bloodcrushers, although they're going to take backseat to my commission work until they're done.
I plan to paint up the guy's Wolf Lord Terminator in the next week and a half, then probably launch into his Space Hulk Blood Angels. I'll probably still do some daemon work, since I can't help jumping from project to project, but it'll be slower is all.

These are some very nice daemons. I especially like the talos/KoS. My vote is faceless. The psycho grin head looks neat, but there's something about the expressionless/faceless helmet atop that hulking body that screams "I'm going to hurt you, and it means nothing to me"...least that's how I see it. Giving me some nice ideas of my own....
You like the tentacle lower half? To me it looks too lite...I like the "shorter" tentacles on the sides, but I think he needs a few longer ones in the centre, though I'm not sure what you'd use beyond sculpting your own. Either way, the guy looks amazing, and the rest of your work is absolute top notch. I've never seen a deciver modle I liked, and after looking at yours I'm clawing my hair out fighting off the urge to buy one!
Great work. Love the Talos DP. My vote is for the toothy grin... it looks far more menacing. I think you get the best of both worlds. The mask covering the eyes gives you the "creepiness" of anonymous malevolence, but the toothy grin is just... scary, on a visceral level.
I can't explain, I just feel like the toothy variant is more malevolent.
EDIT: Yeah, going back to the previous page and looking, the toothy one is just way scarier. It evokes an instinctual reaction of fear in me, whereas the faceless mask variant works on a more intellectual level... meaning, you kind of have to ask yourself for a second "why is this creepy?"... but with the toothy face, it's just immediately scary.

The tentacles do seem a bit small in comparison to the body, but so do the Daemon Prince's regular legs. I hope that once it's all put together and painted it'll be well balanced between details on the upper and lower body.
I quite agree with you on that. You and Frausty both gave great reasoning for each head. To me, the faceless evokes a gimp-like S&M quality, while the psycho grin is a mentally-unhinged terror kind of look.
Speaking of my Keeper: There's a term writers use to describe what to do when you love something but it just isn't working, it's called "Killing your darling."
Basically it means that there comes a point where you have to say screw it, and start from scratch. It's not as drastic as I make it sound, but I had that moment last night. I'm just not happy with how the Psycho Grin mask sits on the head, so I carved the talos bit & daemon head bit apart from one another and mangled them until it looked better.
Here's the result:
It isn't perfect, but the mask now sits further down on the face than before, and at an angle where there isn't an odd bulbous quality to the forehead. I'll take a bit of greenstuff, but I think it looks just about right.

This week I've been working on the Space Wolf commission for my buddy. I'd painted a Rune Priest for him about 6 years ago, and now he's offering to pay me for more. He uses a dark blue scheme for his wolves (originally I used Storm Blue as a basecoat, but that isn't a thing any more, so I've been substituting Necron Abyss).
He likes the original, but wants the armor to be a few shades lighter, and the metal to have a more brassy tone to it. Here's the comparison with the new "Logan Grimnar conversion" and the original Rune Priest.
The head and armor are complete, but everything else is a work in progress. He's missing both arms (one with an axe, and another with a powerfist holding a wolf helmet) as well as a wolf pelt/cloak. He should be done by Thursday or so.

Very interesting take on the Space Wolf armour, I like it though! Logan seems to be coming along splendidly! As for your demons, LOVE the paintjobs, super clean and vibrant, and I'm also really digging your current Talos-Demon head too, nasty mix of mask and maw.

Thanks, although I can't take credit for the color scheme, that belongs to my friend/client.
Here's the finished Logan Grimnar:
I'm happy with him, and I hope the owner is too. You can't see it this picture but the door he's standing on has freehand scrawlings and Blood Angels icons as well as some weathering. If I'd had a bit longer I would have liked to do a little freehand linework on the cloak along with a few runes, although I figure it's probably still above & beyond for the price without it. He's already given me two more minis to paint up, Arjac Rockfist and Lelith Hesperax.
Not jumping right into those though. I haven't done much with my Daemons in the last week and I think I'll start there.

Looking forward to seeing what more you do with your daemons, but I'm very intrigued by someone with your talent doing Lelith.
Would perhaps swapping the shoulder tentacles for the lower ones work - they seem longer. So you'd have a pair of Talos tentacles at the top, and then the rest at the bottom around the longer tail tentacles?
You are one talented painter! Can't wait to see the Keeper-possessed Talos finished...
Very nice plog to go through and take a look at all the great models you have painted up!
That Daemon Prince is just an outstanding piece and I can imagine how well it looks in real life. Your paintjob is really crisp and I really like the Horrors you've painted, could I ask how you did that blue color on their skin? It looks absolutely fantastic and so smooth!
dwarf
I just got the Lelith on Wednesday. I've also been given the army color scheme, which is black and purple (Shading is Lich Purple through Warlock, which I don't care for, but it's not my scheme). I'll be sure to post progress once I get into it.
I'd started out with that in mind, but the tail "tentacles" just looked better above. Additionally, I've shifted them from the shoulders to the shoulder blades, which makes them appear a bit smaller from the front, but more dynamic all around.
I'm waiting to paint him until I've got some experience with the new paints under my belt. I always paint a practice mini before jumping in with new paints.
Thanks for the high praise! The scheme is simple, but tough to get just right since the pigments darken once they're dry. it's about 50/50 Necron Abyss/Fenris Gray, with increasing amounts of white into the mix for each layer, followed by a wash of Asurman Blue.
I've been pouring my attention into a commission Arjac Rockfist which I finished the other day (pictures to come), once that was off my work table I finally wrapped up the Changeling.
The freehand runes were pretty fun, & the skull turned out better than I'd hoped. i wasn't sure about my vision going into it since everyone seems to paint him blue, but now I'm totally pleased with how he looks. Plus now that he's painted up I'll probably remember to use his power more often.
