    Chaosy desert table

Sooo, having finally gotten the opportunity to make by own tabletop, I have started working ever so slowly.

Sadly, my kitchen table is occupied by lots and lots of drying mushrooms at the moment, so I can't show proper pics of the table. I however felt I just need to start this log up before I do any more, otherwise I will not have anything to update later on.

A sneak peak at the table.

I also made a bunch of trees this summer when I had some days off, these are the first round.

For my second batch, I wanted them to look slightly "dryer", like the trees tend to be in dry climates.

I have also made a few buildings, one done and two almost done, so I made a test piece. This ruin was the result. I haven't painted the details as you see, but the buildings will probably look quite a bit like this colour-wise, plus some more high-tech stuff.

*EDIT* I feel it is appropriate to point out that I will be using quite a bit of Hirst Arts molds for the buildings. The tech-peices and the basic blocks are made using Hirst Arts, though the floor panels and the window peices are made using masters and molds I made myself. I will say which is which later when I post more pics of buildings.

I really like the color of your table. What paints did you use?

Dried mushrooms? Some traditional Swedish treat?

    Re: Chaosy desert table

IŽll post a step-by-step of the ruin for the next ruin i do.

The table is just some MDF board painted with a 50/50 mix of water and PVA glue. I then sprinkled sand from a nearby sandbox over the table, washed my hands (because of the cat piss :P ), then mixed some plaster and water and applied random piles, which I then flattened when the plaster was the right consistency.

After that, the table was painted in indoor wood paint, colour = "Earth". It's a form of pale beige colour, and very cheap! Then I applied wood stain, colour "light brown"
It's BB=16 YO=12 RE=6 if you want exactly the same.
When that was dry, after like 2 days, I gave the board a drybrush of white with just a tiny bit of yellow mixed in, using cheap acrylic paint.

The Ruin is just white plaster with some brown pigment mixed in during pre-casting mixing, which then got a wash of the wood stain mentioned above, and the same drybrush as mentioned too.

Very easy, and quite cheap, but the wood stain takes forever to dry.

Hehe, yeah, we got mushrooms growing all over, have gotten 7 liters of dried "trattkantarell" so far, and as wikipedia says "It is an excellent food mushroom, especially fried or in soups, and is easily dried for conservation" so that's what me and the missus are doing!

    Re: Chaosy desert table

    Update time!

Sadly, my grandfather died a few months ago, which was a bummer. However, he was a huge model rail road fan, and no one else wanted his supplies, so I got to inherit quite a bit of useful stuff, which was nice.

So, I think I'm done with my forest. The trees are attached by magnets, so they are easy to remove should any tanks or other large models want to drive through. I gave the big bases some small shrubbery, the forest looked so thin and strange with no smaller bushes.

They turned out quite nice I think.

I have also been putting my Hirst Arts molds to good use, and my first real building is essentially the suggested "Large Fountain" found on their home page. I just changed some details, and I have not done the water effects yet. I also tried another wood-stain, which was mahogany, and not at all as nice quality as the brown one. It was more like paint than wood-stain. However, I could save the fountain by drybrushing and giving it a thin wash of brown wood-stain, and this is how it turned out. Might be nice to break up the colours of the table some. A bit boring if all the buildings are the same colours as the board.
It's a bit hard to see in the picture, but I made the masters for the floor tiles myself, and cast some molds form them, and I did some with chaos stars, which I used around the fountain, and inside the temple which I will show you later. I'll paint them so they become clearly visible later on.

    Re: Chaosy desert table

I'm also building a chaos temple!
I wanted some nice windows, so I made some masters and cast up some molds myself. I should have been more thorough when I did the masters, because they didn't fit all that well with the Hirst Arts pieces. Oh well.
The roof is missing, which will have a sacrificial stone altar thingy. I can't decide on if I should paint it like the ruin or like the fountain? Sand or reddish?

And a combination of Hirst Arts, my own molds and Pegasus Hobbies 'Chemical Plant' and 'Platformer'. Unpainted and the base needs flock.

And some Hirst Arts pipelines, to go with my pumpstation, and coming refinery. These are entirely unpainted, but their bases are flocked.

Looking gooood! I'm not a fan of hirst art stuff personally and I almost have a phobia for plaster, but I still think your making it work well. And I DO like that reddish colour of the fountain, as you say yourself it breaks things up, but I also think the colour fits with the rest of the scale.

One more thing, the walls of the building with the chemical station on the top: they look rather bland and simple, maybe you could do someth there?

Awesome! I, like my fellow country-person lasergreger, am not a huge fan of HirstArts, but it works really well here. I especially like the pump station. I recommend painting both the temple and the pump-station in the same colour as the fountain, to maintain a cohesive colour-scheme across the board.

    Re: Chaosy desert table

Thanks all, and no, this is actually not for a Tzeentch-themed army, but for my Word Bearers and allies.

I had a battle last night, and afterwards I figured I could take some shots of the table with what I got.

The paintjob of the tower in the middle needs to be redone. It was supposed to look like the fountain, but I failed horribly. I mixed too little red into the drybrush paint.

Also, the fountain now have water in the pools! No sprinkling water yet, but there is something there at least.

And a Warning! Don't use GW water effects for any water deeper than, hmmm, about 1 mm. I have actually been filling the pools with water effects waiting three-four days for it to dry, and then filling again for well over a month to get where I am now. And I also needed to cut away some and redo some because of odd looking colourations and stuff.
GW water is for totally flat surfaces only, no water-depth at all!

    Anyway here are some pics!

I feel I need to make both some taller terrain, like some big rocks or something, and more ruins.
It's quite a different experience playing on this table compared to the one I played on before, which was a cityfight table. Suddenly vehicles are pretty darn useful, and long range guns can really be used to put the hurt on early.
I guess that's good and bad, but it's very refreshing for me at least.

Very nice. Does anyone no a website where the Chemical Plant set can be bought? Preferably in the UK. Again looking good, maybe next time you could take some shots mid game, would be nice to see some models in the middle of the action.

I bought mine from TheWarStore.com, which I know is based in the US, but I live in Sweden and it was no hassle at all. Just like ordering within the country, and I didn't get any hidden fees or anything.
In the US they are distributed by Pegasus Hobbies, and I think I remember reading somewhere that they have a UK distributor too, but under a different name.

And thanks all! My terrain building is going painfully slow, now with the holidays and there is just so much stuff to do at uni and home with the gifts and all, so it doesn't look like I will pick up the pace any time soon.
