Shaw3029's Chaos Iron Warriors Painting Log

Welcome to my Iron Warriors painting log!

If you have been following my Imperial Fist thread (in my signature) then you will already know that I have an airbrush and a lot of vehicles that I no longer want for my Imperial Fist army.

So now I am planning to turn them into Iron Warriors with the eventual aim of selling them to fund the new vehicles for my Imperial Fist army. If you know anybody that might be interested then feel free to point them to this thread.

Here is what I have to paint...

    That is;

    3x Rhinos.
    2x Predators.
    1x Forgeworld MKIIB Landraider.
1x Forgeworld Dreadnought. (out of shot)

So far I have undercoated all but the landraider & painted the Dreadnought.

I have ordered a new ramp & a set of Rhino doors for the Landraider. I also have one set of Forgeworld Brass Etched Chaos symbols on the way which I plan to use on all the vehicles.

The style I am aiming for is dark, dirty and gritty much like my Dozer blades that I recently painted for my Imperial Fist army.

The effect is achieved mainly with an airbrush and is a amalgamation of advanced techniques from the Imperial Armour Model Master Class Book.

Hope you like what you see so far!

Re: Shaw3029's Chaos Iron Warriors Painting Log

    Here is the finished Dreadnought.

At the moment It has no Chaos Icons because Forge world are taking there time delivering them. I plan to add one across the right hand shoulder section. I just had to get started.

Comments & suggestions are highly appreciated! Especially at this early stage.

Do you like the look? Will it sell?!

    Cheers!

looks really good, being a IW collector myself it saddens me a bit though to hear that you keep the yellow loyalists instead of the glorious silver traitors ;P
Joke aside, I really think you are on the right track from what I've seen, just remember to ad loads of hazard stripes/chevrons and some more brass. also remember to add some black areas as well, as the legion insignia is usually on a black background.
And a tip for your resale plan, go fluff nuts, it sells better than generic iron warriors imo.

Re: Shaw3029's Chaos Iron Warriors Painting Log

    Thanks guys!

My brass etched sheet from forge world came today so il try and get some paint on the vehicles and some new photos up but I have a weekend at work so I might not get anything done until next week.

    No problem Looko Rex.

Damned Artificer. I have a plan for the hazard strips as they cant be to bright or obvious or they wont fit in with the colour scheme.

What would you suggest by going nuts with the fluff?

    Cheers!

Re: Shaw3029's Chaos Iron Warriors Painting Log

The hazard stripes can easily take as much weathering as the dread you've shown and still look good and low key Well fluff wise, I have done a number of things in my considerations for my own IW army. The 4th legion excel at sieges and traps, so I have bought a bunch of the scout extras like the ropes hanging from their belt and loads of grenades and other stuff so they can booby trap enemies. then there's the armour, they will probably have a large number of mkIII suits as they are big and great for frontal attacks, ideal when you run for the walls of a fortress. My main consideration though was to give them loads of servo arms, bionic limbs etc. to really make them stand apart from the other traitor legions but still look suitably mean and chaotic. Also cult troops are fluff wise limited to bezerkers as the IW's doesn't really trust the four gods (well anyone for that matter) an mostly finds bezerkers to be useful tools, so any other cult troops would probably be on loan from the other legions. They also have a great number of obliterators and hate the imperial fists

I realize that most of this isn't that applicable if you're only doing vehicles, but here they are anyway

Damned Artificer. Thanks for that. Although I wont be doing any troops its cool to know. Hopefully your like the hazard stripes below. They arnt finished just yet. I will be applying a little more weathering over the tip.

I put a few hours painting time in today. The rhinos are very nearly finished just need to attack them with a sponge and lots of weather powder.

This is how they looked pre weathering with just the boltgun metal, mithril silver highlight and a couple quick patchy sprays of a purple and yellow glaze.

After that I applied a coat of hairspray, roughly sprayed a patchy coat of Iyanden Darksun all over and then took a paint brush with warm water and rubbed off the paint to created a weathered effect. I repeated the process again mixing the Iyanden Darksun with scorched brown for a darker effect.

The same technique was applied to the hazard strips but with yellow and black.

I then mixed rust weathering pigment with burnt umber oil paint & white spirit. This was then flicked onto the model using some paper and a old dry brush. White spirit was then sprayed through the airbrush to disperse the paint into the cracks and create some streaky effects.

Hope you guys like them so far!

    Cheers!

I love the hazarrd stripes, they look great I'd still suggest you add some black areas to the tank though, not only because it's the IW's colour scheme, but also because it helps break up the large amount of metallic areas. You could do the hairspray n'toothbrush effect on the black, leaving some of the metallic undercoat looking through and then weather it up heavily

Re: Shaw3029's Chaos Iron Warriors Painting Log

I think you might well be right.

What if the sections at the front and back are painted black & the front window sections & storm bolter painted bronze like in this photo.

Once I have applied the weathering with the sponge to the corners & other high wearing areas it will break the metallic sections up a bit anyway.

    Cheers!

Yeah or paint them black and put the legion logo there, you have an airbrush so make a stencil of the iron skull logo and add i to the blank doors that would be really awesome

Your big surface, bare metal corrosion on your dread is the best I've seen. Gorgeous.

    Thanks guys!!

I actually decided not to go with hazard stripes on the doors. At the moment as I thought they might over power the model. Hopefully with the additional black patches they work as plain metal. What do you guys think?

I think you Iron warriors are getting lazy and should give their vehicles wash!! - pride in your kit and all!!

No seriously I think it's comming along very nicely. I love the Dusty effect you've used.

I think a bit of weathered gold detailing will really finish it off nicely.

Nice work, look foward to more!

Yeah finish it of with some nice brass and you are nearly there, you only need to add legion insignia's after that

Re: Shaw3029's Chaos Iron Warriors Painting Log

Thanks guys. I am toying with the legion insignia at the moment. I cannot decided how to do it.

The photos took me a lot longer to post than I expected as I lost the camera lead for a little while.

I have changed the Rhinos and the dreadnoughts so the glass and buttons etc are now green.

I think it gives them a bit more pop and makes them look a little more chaos.

I have started painting the landraider which I hope to finish to the same standard as the Rhinos tomorrow.

    Cheers!
