'Age old resolve' and 'time-tested technology' The Barak Varr Throng

Durgrim Redmane cast an eye over the crowd ignoring the snores of the weak headed who had already succumbed to the ale.

That is the first senteance I read when i started my first warhammer army. So very long ago. A Dwarf army off coarse. Now you ask why i`m posting this (unless you succumbed to the ale). Take a seat for a long story. (or scroll on to the pictures)

Dwarfs were my first army. Partly painted in oil paint so thick the could bounce off a wall. (and did just to prove chipping does not exist) Had them up to a sizeable force before getting into chaos and guard and orkz.

I returned to my beloved beardlings at the time of the Storm of Chaos. And made a slayer army. I got addicted to doomseekers, and then got bored of them.

After that I started a new Dwarf army. Painted to a slightly higher standard. they needed a darker look then the red and white of old, so I went for black and purple. This force got to about 2000 points. before being retired just before the new edition of warhammer.

Right now I feel the need to get them up and running again. With more then some help from Boreas I got to work. I strated digging and rebased the remnants of the purple army.

These had normal bases with some stones, grass and snow. But i redid them with plaster blocks i got off Boreas. He ussed them for his dwarfs too.
But 20 warriors is not the most awesome sight on a battlefield, so i started digging. (getting in the dwarf spirit) I found 20 more warriors, mainly skullpass. Good enough for my tastes. Enter a horde of warriors.

I then stumbled on the oldest warriors in my collection. Over 60 warriors. Once 3 units, now the survivors are fixed up and they will for a second horde of warriors. They are rebased as you can see, but still need a touch up.

Then a unit of crossbow-dwarfs. These are the models one can make out of the current. But i added an old drunken dwarf to fill out the ranks.

Will post more tomorrow, there are characters and artillery calling for attention.

Aye, good to see you are finally entering 8th edition!

I remember those old warriors fondly, fighting battles on your table against my High Elves in the old days of 6th edition...

We'll have to do a battle soon...

NICE! Good to see you are finally shaping up for 8th edition... You'll have to admit, it was about time Good to see all those old Dwarfs (the way all Dwarfs should be). It should be no problem to incorporate all these diffferent models into the army...

The black and purple works really well! Prepare for battle, we have some Skaven to kill...

I already cast some more tiles for you. I know you are going to need them if you want to re-base all your Dwarfs. By tuesday I should have at least a hundred tiles for you, possibly even more!
Check out my Mordheim scenery! NOW! I mean... Please... Only if you want to of course...
Get your ale while it's still hot! And discover why Stirland should rule The Empire...

Thank you. At first I wasn`t sure, but the more tiles, the better the effect.

And about those skaven....I`m afraid you have more entries in the book of grudges then Malcador has. You will feel hairy revenge too, manling.

    Thank you! Purple rules!

Now for some more updating. I wanted to finish my core characters and warmachines. but unfortunatly i forgot the few basingstones that were left at Boreas`. So no basing.
But since it`s all a WIP still, here are pictures of the guns.

First off, three bolt throwers. I had two of them, one finished, one sprayed. Bought a new one yesterday, and swapped the undercarriage for one with wheels.

I have no new cannon, and only one very old stonethrower. I don`t like the new stonethrower models, and i don`t want to mix models with wooden undercarriages with my metal ones. I`ll need to think about solving that.

I do have a good organ gun, and build a second today. And i dug up the old flamecannon, and fitted it with metal wheels. (from a 40k ork lobba or kannon)

I just debased the first characters for the new throng. I have no plaster bases yet, but here are Kragg the Brimm, Mr. Bugman, and the white dwarf.

And the big bossman. Lord Lordi Hammerson, and his personal standardbearer.

Tommorow they will be joined by another older White Dwarf, some engineers, and some runesmiths. Also i need to find poor old Helga. i know the girl is in there somewhere.
Good day for now, but before leaving here`s a sneakpeak.....

Next update. Finished most of the Ironbreakers. I need 6 more shields, but i can`t find them. The front ranks are in order.

And two characters have gotten their oathstones. they will also be placed on the purple and black flagstones. That is next.

Free oathstones indeed. I dug up more IB shields myself. From the old unit of breakers. I`m missing two.

And the next update is even bigger! As today I done Characters and some war machines. I can gladly say that i finished the first models. Most still need touching up, but i have now a finished bolt thrower and a finished organ gun. each machine has one crewmember on it`s base, and two loose ones on single bases. The bolter has a engineer.

    And the bolter:

Re: 'Age old resolve' and 'time-tested technology' The Barak Varr Throng

Next up is a flamecannon. The wheels are stolen off a ork kannon. I don`t want wood in my armies warmachines. Wood bad, metal good!

Now for the characters. As i said in a previous post Josef Bugman and Kragg the Grimm were waiting. They are now based. However they must wait for an updated paintjob. I want to get ready for some games first.
Bugman and Kragg flank the first unitfiller. A troll in chains, once for my slayer army during the Storm of Chaos. The chains broke and will be fixed when i do the rest of the slayers.

Then there are my Runesmith and the battlestandard who have been fully based now. The runesmith is ready for battle, the standard needs some chips worked away.

And Lordi Hammerson of clan Elgi-a-Dreng, and thane Helga Horsekiller.

    First unit filler indeed....

Could you perhaps turn off the flash of your camera? The pictures are a bit bright imo.

Re: 'Age old resolve' and 'time-tested technology' The Barak Varr Throng

    To long no updates.

@malcador. They are without flash. Might do them without the lights on. My camera is more suited for long range.....

@ Boreas. (now almost two weeks after that battle) It was an epic one. Biggest I played ever. Thoug the few fourthousand pointers i played involved you too.

So, yes. I the week I started this thread, i started mouthing off having thousands of points ready in the week. So Boreas, the mad Imperial engineer that he is, took me up on it. And we organized a 5000 points battle. And boy, can i tell you, it was goood!

My army inclueded a lord on his shield, a couple of thanes, a dragon slayer and Josef Bugman. I took a horde of warriors, twice, I had 30 Longbeards, 20 slayers, 20 breakers, two times 14 crossbows. and three times 12 Thunderers. And a lot of war machines.

I had to bring so much dwarfs and stuff to Boreass glorious gamingtable, that I couldn`t take a camera. (mine is a bit big) But he took some pictures. (OK only during the first turns, after that we forgot. So: pictures!

A boltthrower, ready to fire behind it`s cover. (the red and white wall is borrowed from Boreas, who also has dwarfs.

    next up, the right flank.

And a pict of the left flank.

An overview of the whole line.

The battle was glorious. It had epic moment. Longbeards stopping a charging horde of Greatswords dead in their tracks. luthor Huss being chopped to little ribbons by a dragon slayer. A unit of Ironbreakers, charging right through imperial lines under heavy fire from hellblasters and handgunners, killing of a unit of spearman in the process. miners whiping out a whole artillery hill, and most of a pistoliers unit.

    Epic stuff.

I do have to admitt defeat.

And Boreas, I will settle that grudge on your Hellblasters.......26, 26 aààànd 28 shots.....grumble.....

Re: 'Age old resolve' and 'time-tested technology' The Barak Varr Throng

It was indeed a great battle! Even in defeat your Dwarfs proved very tough (as they should be)! It was the biggest battle I ever played, but not for very long... As soon as you have some more models based we can even go for 6000 points (que megalomaniac laughter)! That would be awesome!

Your army worked quite well and proved very balanced. The big blocks of tough Dwarfs were a real pain to deal with and Dwarf artillery is very, very effective (I must grudgingly confess it's superior even to my Empire guns). It's very good to see the army works so well in 8th edition!

Grumble all you will about my Helblasters, they did very well... In fact, they did so well that they are next in line for some paint!

And what's that about those Oathstones? Are they for free?

Thank you. It gives a special look to the force. Specially when fielding a lot of them.

Re: 'Age old resolve' and 'time-tested technology' The Barak Varr Throng

    @ Boreas

Battle next week sounds good. But first some more pictures.

I start with the rebassed unit of longbeards. In the last edition my battlestandard would lead 19 of them. Now he will be leading 30. Someday i might get them up to a true hordesize. But for now, 19 painted ones, 11 black ones, all in need for shields.....

Also the slayer that so grandly chopped up luthor Huss last battle. This one used to be the armystandardbearer from my SoC slayer army. That is why the hand is damaged. he`ll recieve attention soon.

It`s the best slayer model they ever made, no?

Re: 'Age old resolve' and 'time-tested technology' The Barak Varr Throng

Another little update. Last edition I ddn`t ever field stonethrowers. (not grudgethrowers! i use the old name, like a good dwarf should.)
I liked the old stonethrower, the wooden one. It was all romanlike, and i could imagine it working. But the new model i don`t like. It`s not symetrical, and I don`t like the advanced springtorsion system for firing. I doesn`t look like it would work. But the problem is I don`t want wooden warmachines either.

My solution was simple. Make them gunpowder machines. Field mortars. Stonethrowers can missfire, so the rules don`t mind. (I hardly play tourneys anymore) My ussual opponents don`t mind, here is what i came up with:

    What do you think?
