    The Road to the Storm

So i have a bad habit of starting projects and then abandoning them... BuT NOT THIS TIME!!!

i've started work on a Storm of Magic Tzeentch Mortals army, armour-heavy, with no marauders planned to make an appearence, and the only thing not in armour being the warhounds and the bossmage's Manticore

    But wait, there's more!

since i'll be building a 2400 chaos army, i will have 600 points of SOM allowance to play with, and i plan on having 2 things to fill that role depending on my mood:

    1) Vampiric-thrall-led undead force... because i like skeletons and have to do SOMETHING with the marauders i'll have left over when i've finished with the Chaos Warriors batallion.

    2) MONSTERS, specifically those lurking around at the back of the SOM book, some of which may not see much light otherwise, still at the planning phase for these critters, but Chaotic Unicorns and a Chaos Carnosaur are definately going to be there

"Chaos Carnosaur you say?" i hear you cry... or maybe that's just the voices in my head.

    Yes, chaos carnosaur... Meet Caligula

More to come as i finish my somewhat beastly Chosen, figure out how i'm going to model evil unicorns (marauder horses and spawn parts), finish off the sorcerer lord and his pet flying kitten, and do... other stuff yet to be decided

    C&C appreciated :3

Oooh, You should look at painting the Carnosaur like the First Chaos Dragon, Gaulrauch. It would be neat. Or completely black with Red Source Lighting coming from the eyes.

Re: The Road to the Storm

thank you very much for the prompt replies, as a reward, have some more pictures!

First up is the WIP Ghorgon i decided to start last night, after idly reading through the SoM book to see what interesting monstrosities there were. This one caught my fancy as it pretty much IS chaos, a mad Minotaur with four arms, mouths wherever they'll fit, and blades for hands... I have decided to name him Tiberius

So, i raided my framebox and found a minotaur frame from an aborted Beastguard project last year, as well as some other bits... and so i went to work...

Still in dire need of some greenstuff work, which i shall do when i'm not suffering from self-inflicted sleep-deprivation. the head is actually a Juggernaught one, as i felt it captured the mad "Ima eat yo' FACE" feel of the model.

Next up is Dido Juliana, the Maiden of Tzeentch

It is well known that a unicorn will only come for an unsullied Maiden, and while the unicorns found wandering the chaos wastes aren't quite as sane as the noble creatures found further south, they still abide by this fundamental rule. Because of this, the Sorcerer-Chieftain of the Varagnion Tribe had the young Dido sealed into a suit of Chaos armour when she first showed signs of magical ability, to preserve her for the express intention of attracting these insane creatures to his cause, leaving their care to her. As a result, she rarely speaks to the other members of her tribe, preferring the company of the unicorns, to whom she has become a sort of daughter-leader, under the protection of Septimus, the magnificent leader of these fell but noble beasts.

The idea behind this lady, who has spent a long time in her armour, is that she's the de-facto controller of the future Unicorns that will be popping up, and in-game they will be covering her while she does spellcaster things. My current idea is to have 3 'standard' unicorns made from Marauder Horsemen ponies with spawn-bitz for horns, and have a Royal Unicorn made from the majestic Dohrgar, Archon's big pony, again with spawnybitz

C&C appreciated, as usual, more to come soon!!!

Re: The Road to the Storm

Tiiiime for an update, which will hopefully attract a few more comments >.>

    First up

My Sorcerer-lord on a Manticore, Tiberius. There's no conversion on this particular model, unusual for me because I usually convert lord/hero class models to hell and back, but this particular kit is so beautiful (in it's evil-person-riding-a-demonic-flying-kitty kind of way) that i could not bring myself to take my knife to it. My current plan is to run him with the Crimson Armour of Dargan and the Glaive of Putrefaction and send him monster-hunting in SoM games, as that particular combo looks pretty nasty for that purpose.

    Next

The Exalted Hero, Nero, made with some Chaos Warrior legs i had lurking about, and the combat-based parts left over from the Manticore frame. He's about a head taller than the average Warrior, and looks pretty boss-like

    Now the Chosen
    Front Rank

    Second Rank

These fine gentlemen are a fairly simple conversion, just Beastigors with Warrior (and 2 Knight) heads, but the overall effect is pretty badass in my opinion. They'll be getting a bit of neckfillery at some point soon, so that they look less like heads glued to bodies.

And finally, the standard bearer of the Knights

I took the banner-top from the Chaos Space Marine sprue, and stuck it there to make it clear that this army is Tzeentchian (not that the eventual blue armour wouldn't give that away... but still)

That's all for now, the Ghorgon is getting dropped and replaced, as closer reading indicates that it's meant to be Giant-Sized, so that's a project for a later date.

As usual, C&C very much appreciated

    GS

    EDIT:

Also, here's the army so far. The astute among you may notice that there's also 13 warriors and a unit of Warhounds, but they've had nothing special done to them, and everyone's seen them before, so no detail shots until they get painted

The Ghorgon looks really good and your chosen are simple but effective. The sorceress' fluff is a very neat way of bringing in the unicorns. I looks forward to more.

Re: The Road to the Storm

Glad you guys like the minoGhorgon, but alas, he is too small for my purposes, as according to the rules, a Ghorgon is approximately Giant-sized, so back to the drawing board with him, and i'll see if i can find a use for mr angry at a later date

In the meantime, @student, you mentioned the unicorns, here's the first one. Meet Septimus, the Royal Chaos Unicorn
Septimus is the first of the Chaos Unicorns that Dido brought to Tiberius' army. Entrusted to her while he was still a foal by his mother, Dido raised him with as much care as being a sorceress of chaos would allow. Blessed by Tzeentch, he quickly grew until he towered over her, and with a female unicorn that arrived later, sired a small herd.
Every so often, a brave or foolhardy Champion will come to Dido and ask her permission to attempt to break one of herd over which she is the de-facto matriarch, and turn it into a ridable mount. She always allows them to try, but the ones that survive usually quickly leave the force to avoid the vengeful fury of Septimus for daring to try and ride one of his offspring. The only one who is, albeit rarely, permitted to ride Septimus and his brood is Dido herself, although she prefers to walk.

    Septimus and his 'mother'

Septimus is built around Archon's horse, although getting the legs off made me SO glad the model is no longer metal, The horn is that of a dragon that i had spare.... Unicorn compensating for something?.

    C&C, as usual, appreciated

I'm a big fan of those chosen. Are they completely hairless, or is the angle hiding furry elbows/flanks? I like the idea that they're creepily bald - you could go for some neat smooth inhuman flesh tones. That would really give them the impression that they're more on the daemon side than the man side anymore.

Re: The Road to the Storm

Thanks for the comments so far guys ^^, glad you seem to be enjoying the project as much as i am

@ArtificerArmour: steal away, i wouldn't put it up here if i was worried about people taking ideas from it ^^

@Yorrik: for the most part, they are hairless, they do have the little tufts of fluff at the back of the legs common to pretty much all beastmen, but i plan on making their skin an extremely dark, almost black, blue.

@Borzoni: Expand? how does THE PROTOTYPE FOR THE STANDARD CHAOS UNICORNS sound?

All of the unicorns under Dido's command are kept saddled and bridled, not because they are to be ridden, but because it make it easier for the beasts to be brought back under control after a battle. With the help of their Sire, Septimus, Dido takes hold of their bridles and whispers words unknown to all but her in their ears, calming them and allowing her to lead them away from the slaughter to clean and brush them, ready to strike awe in another battle.

I'm planning to paint these beasties white, to further highlight their noble origin, tie them back to usual unicorn mythology, and make the mutated parts seem all the more perverse compared to the purity of their coats

As usual, C&C very much appreciated

Re: The Road to the Storm

I think this is a really cool idea for an army and I like what you've done so far but the bit about leaving the saddles on is a bit odd. I can understand why they would have a harness to make catching them easier. I know that removing the saddle means getting rid of a lot of plastic but I'm in the process of making some centaurs using the marauder horses and removed the saddles quite quickly using an engraving tool.

Alas, i lack an engraving tool, i may attack them with a craft knife when i'm feeling less lazy, but for now the saddles, and half-hearted excuses, remain :P

    Thanks again guys

Re: The Road to the Storm

time for the moment i gather most of you have been waiting for :P

    dun dun DUNNNN

    Paint!
The first warrior's paint test is done, tell me what you think guys? I'm not exactly the best painter in the world, and was going for something easy and quick-ish to paint so i can get the rank and file fieldable as soon as possible. My various creatures will have a bit more care and attention paid to them when i get around to doing them... sometime next millennium
    anyway, picture time!

Still considering a couple of the details, but for the most part, the proto-warrior is done. the armour is just straight boltgun with Asurmen blue wash, the gloves and boots are bestial with ogryn brown wash, the fur is beastial with badab black (I love the washes, can you tell?), and all the gold bits are just a straight coat of shining gold, might add mithril silver highlights to them at some point

    C&C, as usual, very welcome

Re: The Road to the Storm

    doubleposty update of dooom!

nothing new painted as yet, buut, there will be some more paint related updates once i've built some of this!

...the WOC batallion box is huuuuuuge

The main thing that prompted this update though, is the fact that i recieved the initial stage of the next member of my SoM menagerie

Yeeep, it's a Firmir, probably from Warhammer Quest, OOP since... probably before i was born, and i plan to convert the living hell out of it
    BASK IN MY HERESY!
    ...ahem

But yea, i plan to attack it with greenstuff, give it some orcy arms and turn it into a Firmir Balefiend

C&C on the paint job from the last job stillllll welcome by the way ~subtle hint~

The sorceress and her unicorn are neat (fluff-and model-wise). I hadn't realised the Archaon mount was such a beautiful sculpt until now, and the unicorn conversion really works well. I also like your exalted and the chosen look good too.
