Eh. It costs nearly twice as much as an Empire cannon but it's also more reliable (fixed S10 grapeshot, re-rolls on the bounce) and comes with a free S5, T6 chariot and seven crew/beast attacks so its vastly less vulnerable to skirmishing war machine hunters, in theory due to being able to a) hit back and b) move and fire.
It's also the second cheapest Rare unit in the book.
Plus it looks awesome so you'll see a disproportionate number of them for a while.

Anyone got pictures of the Skaven sketches?
This book sounds amazing. I think WHF is going to "a new dimension", a "Apocalypse Fantasy", and I like it!
Does anyone know if this will include more scenarios? We have been loving SoM, and have embraced the whole 8th ed random scenario thing. But there are only 3 scenarios in the book, and well one just isnt ballanced at all (e.g. fun the first time but....).

Any chance of a giant bear? Not Giant size, but Ogre size would be nice and would go great with Wood Elves. Reaper has just such a bear that I would love to include with the white stag in a warhammer game.

Lots of lovely rumors floating around of late...
Yup, there are campaign rules for playing through the narrative of the book. It is divided into 6 phases each of which has a special scenario but also provides a framework for adding extra battles using certain of the standard scenarios for multiplayer campaigns. It also has additional rules for army selection and optional character casualty rules. The outcomes of the battles score you points which determine who wins each phase, each of which effect the battles of the final phase in a different way including some allowing you to grant 'veteran abilities' to units as a sort of experience bonus.
The first phase scenario centres around a magical altar which attacks units when first entering it but then grants that side bonuses in the magic phase including a somewhat risky and chaosy bound direct damage spell and grants extra VP for controlling at the end of the game. In all phase 1 battles Wizards can also all re-roll miscasts due to the heightened winds of magic but the 2nd result MUST be taken even if worse.
The second phase scenario sees the chaos side attacking and attempting to subjugate an army of giants for later useThere are dust storms in all phase 2 battles which can effect shooting and charging at range.
The third phase scenario works like meeting engagement but with a watchtower in one side which is being defended against the chaos horde (by the chaos dwarves in the narrative) offering bonus VP. In all 3rd phase battles the ground of the dark lands are represented by all hills counting as dangerous terrain in addition to normal effects and water or swamps deal damage. You can also choose to fight a 'dread host' an all monster army led by an emperor dragon using the SOM rules (which are optional scenarios in all phases).
The 4th phase scenario represents a border princes holdfast being assaulted by the chaos horde. the defenders deploy in the centre with some defensive structures with 50% the points of the attacker and must hold out as long as possible. They have Ld bonuses whilst inside this area and penalties when outside it. All attackers gain hatred and the optional destroying building rules are used. All 4th phase battles may also use mercenary allied contingents to represent the mercenaries of the border princes.
The 5th phase scenario works like battle for the pass and represents the Night Goblins of the Winters Teeth Pass falling upon the chaos horde. The attacker may deploy some of their units in reserve which can later enter play from the impassable long board edges. If the attackers are night goblins they also gain free collosal squigs which enter as reserves in the above manner. All 5th phase battles also allow the non-chaos side to make one unit an ambusher and the chaos side can re-roll their first failed panic test.
The 6th and final phase scenario is fought across a defended water ditch with the defender having 75% of the points of the chaos horde and 2 hills ans 12" of obstacles on their side at a position of their choosing. The water ditch counts as dangerous terrain. Grand Armies are suggested for this phase. All the victory effects from earlier phases come into effect for this battle.
MA sounds like more of a bestiary than a narrative though so hard to say if it will follow suit and contain any campaign or scenario rules.

This is what GW should have done with the release of the current 8th Edition a year ago!
Apocalypse is popular because it allows a lot of collectors and old school gamers to bring out their mass of models and chuck some dice! And adding NEW cool big monstrous beasties is just extra cake!
