Some great monsters in the book. I'm really looking forward to the Merwyrm (never would have thought that but the description makes me want a Pagowyrm for my DE) and the Fire and Death elementals. Not the most powerful new scrolls but not the most expensive either, which is good considering a 3+ spell known by every mage can wreck them or turn them against you...

Really liked this book, more so than the Storm of Magic. Have already convinced my gaming group that we should allow monsters into our regular armies as well, counting as rare so the biggest & meanest monsters don't get to dominate the battlefield, but it adds a lot of cool stuff. I myself plan on getting a Preyton (ambush & fly can't go wrong) & some skinwolves for my chaos armies. Might build my own Necrofex for my VC, just to try it out.

Me too!. I always liked the storm of Chaos conversions that were floating around. This has the extra benefit of being a good unit filler for Seaguard and Corsairs (with some strategic basing...). .. That goes for most of these things as well. With the 8th edition mass infantry paradign, a few monstersous unit fillers can make a unit look big and fantastical, plus gets some use out of these nice models in regular games.

I got the book today as well and like with Tamurkhan I'm pretty impressed! There is some great artwork in it, I love the Elemental of Death and the Necrofex Colossus, but all pieces are fantastic. The Mourngul is one of the creatures I'm also looking forward as a model, and the Phoenix.

Now doing some actual work and then reading into the stuff instead of looking at pretty pictures.

    Re: Monstrous Arcana

The Mourngul is basically someone who died in the freezing winter in the mountains after enduring desparation and cannibalism without a chance to survive. When they die some of them get saturated by the Winds of magic and are some sort of half dead, half alive monstrosity. They are only partly real and partly shadow creatures, feeding upon the living and radiating the deathly chill of the grave.
The artwork looks similar to a banshee, only much more horror-like. It is easily the most "horror" monster I've seen from GW.

On the evil tree spirit: Nothing directly, no. The closest monster would be the Necrofex collosus, which basically looks like the mast of a ship fused together with innumerable corpses and metal. But as the description implies, it is a creation by Necromancers, no evil tree spirit. The Preyton is a corrupted Great Stag, so maybe it is closer to being an evil spirit.

Nope, it is not the artwork shown there (think it was posted here as well, some time ago), the art in the book looks more along the line of http://magiccards.info/scans/en/shm/72.jpg Only less humanoid and larger. And a bit more evil...a lovely piece, really.

What's the google thing, then? Is it in Monstrous Arcanum?

    Re: Monstrous Arcana

Yeah, the Mourngul is a ogre-sized humanoid torso severed (in a "ripped in twain" kinda way) at around stomach height with a gaping distended jaw, pallid grey flesh, rats nest hair, and elongated arms that serve as both locomotion and form of attack. They are forever hungry in large part because what is left of their stomachs are open to the elements so anything they do manage to consume will just drop right out….

E: the google image may be an early concept of the MG but it's not really grimdark enough; too much green and looks too alive really.

First thing that sprung to mind was "wendigo"- cannibalism origin, cold weather, missing part of lower body. In the Wendigo's case it's the feet rather than everything below the waist, though.

Makes me think of the Peryton from D&D- stag head, eagle body.

I dont have a copy of the book but a guy i regulary play against does and well its a great book. We played the monster cave scenario and it was the most fun game of warhammer that i have had in a long time. The rules are quite balanced and just like the rest of mine and his games it was pretty close. This book is a great job by forge world id give it a 9/10

I received my copy about a week ago and must say I'm very pleased with it. It looks good, it's filled with cool monsters and even has some nice scenario's...

Does anyone know when the next book will be released? I'm really looking forward to it.

I'm the proud owner of one now too. It is every bit as nice as the people say it is.

My only bit of real criticism is the considerable amount of redundancy with Tamurkhan. But this is only because I own both. For people not willing to pay for Tamurkhan the current situation is great.
