Picked up a copy of this at the Forge World open day last month but only started reading it last night (at four in the morning, when I couldn't sleep ).
Wow, what a fantastic book. Well written and beautifully produced. The sort of book that it's just a joy to own and browse through.

We really need a like button on this site.

I find it funny how much the Magma dragon looks like a Desert Spiny Swift(Sceloporus magister), I've currently got one in the shop and just looking at the book and then looking back to her is really quite amusing.

Yeah I thought it was incredibly lizard like, doesn't look promising.

Btw I just ripped apart a paper on Sceloporus jarrovi today at school, nice coincidence!

There's been some weeks since WF released something. Can we expect a new monster tonight?

Apparently not! This weeks news letter is 40K

I'm sure at least the Giant Squig must be ready by now.

Do you think that the upcoming Bull Centaurs will be on monster cavalry bases (does the book say)? How big will that make them? I don't mind if they beef them up a bit, but I really like the old ones, so keeping them CD like and not making their torsos to big could be important to me...

They will be on 50mm bases (according to Tony Cottrell after a 5 minute ramble about what the models fit on)

    Re: Monstrous Arcana

Just received this book a few days ago. It's as amazing as I'd expected.

I just love perusing through all the great monsters and artwork. Reminds me of when I was a kid and used to scour the Dungeons and Dragons Monstrous compendiums for hours, reading all the descriptions and looking at the pictures and rules. It's amazing to think that Warhammer forge will be bringing all these great creatures to life as models.

I don't know which is my favorite. There's monsters I've seen that look like they will be amazing in sculpted form. I am anxious to see the Necrofex colossus, the dread saurian, and the Ka'ddai destroyer when they are finished. The colossus in particular should be HUGE based on it's artwork, though extremely fragile I'd imagine.

I'm wondering if things like the Bull centaurs will get versions with all their weapon options? I know the Fimir have the option of 2 hand weapons, but only have the great weapons modeled for them. Things like the Ka'ddai Destroyer have completely different build outs (bull like, humanoid, etc) which correspond to different upgrades they can take, I can't imagine WF will give you all the options for these though.

It's exciting to think that this is only the first of other monstrous Arcana books, and that they will release more and more monsters as the years go on. Can't wait to see what they come up with next.

This. If I'm allowed one no-content post, it'd be this.

    The Squig looks cool

For those who have the book, is there any Wood Elf oriented stuff in there? I want to get the book but cash is tight right now.

just had a quick glance in the 'panoply of monsters' section in my copy and bar the usuaul like Great Stag, Unicorn, Eagle and Dragon, WE have no kinship with any of the other monsters they only close that I personally when I first saw the artwork I thought the 'Preyton' would be WE friendly but after reading it's background that's a no starter

It's not really important. It's not likely you're ever going to field two of any of those, unless for some reason you want to have werewolves or those CD things in your WE army...

    Re: Monstrous Arcana

I'd imagine the merwyrm could be made to fit WE quite nicely and also the Arcane Phoenix. But there are no WE specific beasts. Oh I'm sorry - elemental of beasts!!! That would kick as in a WE army. Supercool! I think it would be nice if they included some forest things in the next MA. There's an old magic card that comes to mind - wormwood treefolk. That combined with something huorn like would be nice, lke a decaying tree walking around eating stuff. Could fit both Beastmen and Woodies. Some haloweenish pumpkin/plant animation would be cool too! (This is just rambling guys, I have no idea if this will come to pass).

BTW, book is truly awesome, I love it! The same as Tamurkhan! Great stuff!!

Both the Dreadmaw and of course the Incarante Elemental of Beasts or very fitting for Wood Elves. Apart from that: nothing really in my opinion. One could work with "counts as" for some monsters, the Rogue Idol of G/M could work as a gigantic treeman or something similar.

Yes and no. I don't have the book at this place, but I remember that the Dreadmaw was marked on different locations in the map of the Old World - including Khemri. I simply extrapolated that, to my opinion that a burrowing creature would fit quite well into a forest.

I like all the shiny new monsters and magic items in this book...........however I wonder how much they play tested them? Some of them are so horribly broken it's not funny.

A Flying Kaadi Destroyer anyone? (As if the one that walks wasn't bad enough)

A Carmine Dragon who's breath weapon does 2d6 cannon balls in close combat?

Or the Basilisk....... I like the model and I like the rules..... except the rolling a dice at the start of the cc phase for every model in the combat involving the basilisk. That could really slow down the game, imagine a couple of hordes are involved, nothing like rolling 80+ dice before you even get to swing!

There is some nicely balanced stuff in there though.

    Re: Monstrous Arcana

Picked up the book last week, great art and bestiary descriptions, i quite like the new magic items and the mythic artefacts, could have done with some more stories though other than teh very very short narrative, but thats just me wanting more background with the new monsters.

If theres any creatures I really want to see as a miniature it would have to be the merwyrm (love the art, very primeval looking thing), the necrofex colossus just to see the flayed corpses and bodies within a giant framework and a Dread Maw, simply because I want one in my chaos dwarf army, giant burrowing worm drake found in the mining pits, yes please.
