    Rooster's Fantasy Blog

So I've decided to get involved in this years tale of the fantasy painters and have decided to start a plog to show my efforts.

Go easy on me as this is my very first attempt at taking photos and I'm a bit of a beginner at painting, modelling etc.

Here is a ghoul that will be included in my first months offerings.

Hope my photo skills and painting will improve as this log gets going.

I have already noticed that I will have to be ALOT more careful with mold lines etc.

    C+C welcome

    Hey, it's looking terrific!

The blood is a nod to you, it's especially brilliant. The only thing I'd criticize is the base, the rim needs a color to suit te model, perhaps a grim brown.

    Cheers, welcome,
    Goat

    I don't like that.

Painting's superb, the models really well done, but it's so creepy and undead that I'm not going to be able to sleep now I've seen it.

    Cheers for the comments guys.

I totally agree about the base Goat of Yuggoth, but the thing is I have sort of made a movement tray for them to sit on and its in the same style.

I will tidy his base up though it is already chipped!

Here is a little look at the tray.

Trying to not show to much until the completed thread for this month is up.

The tray is wip and still need to paint the brazier etc.

I like your blood effects, very nice I'm working on a ghoul unit myself and am not thrilled with my blood effects so far.

Looking good! I'll second (third?) a vote in favor of the blood effects. The rat eating the decaying corpse is a nice, grisly, touch.

That green balefire you've achieved looks great as well. It's a nice color, and I hope it's something we'll see throughout the army.

Re: My first attempt tofp-Vampire Counts

    Thanks for the comments guys!

So I was in the rumours section this morning, it seems Vampire counts may be the next army released (when hastings and harry add their weight to the rumour its usually concrete).

This has got me very excited indeed because the models I have at the moment are mostly Mantic skellies which tbh I'm not 100% convinced by. I will paint some up for next months effort in the tale and see how they look though.

I have to say all the rumoured kits sound right up my street especially ogre sized zombies!!

Ps how do I quote people in my messages?

Click on the "quote" button at the bottom right corner of their post. There is also "multiquote", which you use when you want to quote multiple people. To use this feature click multiquote on as many posts as you want, and when you have one post you wish to quote remaining click "quote" for that one. Say, for instance, you want to quote Dan, Steve, Brian, and James. To quote them all you would click:

    Multiquote (Dan)
    Multiquote (Steve)
    Multiquote (Brian)
    Quote (James)

    In that order.

And here are a couple more! This is my contribution for this months tale,

Couldn't get a photo with the fire as well as the whole unit in a shot, really gonna have to work on these camera skills!!

The colour here is way off, but wanted to show a shot of the whole unit. Anyway you get the idea.

    Hope you like

No comments Ah well never mind.

I have spent the evening cleaning up and putting together a unit of mantic skellies (that I'm not sure I like the look of).

Anyhow, I am thinking of doing a quick etheral type paint job on them, with maybe metal gored up armour and weapons. What do you guys think, could it work or would a more traditional bone colour be better?

    Cheers Dean

Re: My first attempt tofp-Vampire Counts

I've thought that the Mantic Skellies are better suited for a different paintjob than pure bones since I first saw them. Ethereal is one choice, and the other is old bones, you know the effect that bones get when they're really old? Try searching "skeletal remains" for reference

Don't worry about the comments, the Fantasy section is a bit hectic. I have usually one reply and then the thread is tarpitted onto the fifth page before I update again... I think it's because the Fantasy section is so huge! But, more writers, more viewers, more replies. Eventually.

About your camera issues: Try different backgrounds. A black silk cloth, a blue metal panel. Anything that makes the picture look interesting. You might also want to not use flash, if the pictures come out too dark then just change the setting so that the light is behind you when you take the picture.

And take multiples, then you'll have plenty to choose from.

And of course if you're not already, switch to the macro setting. Looks like a little tulip. It also helps to take pictures further away and crop the excess.

    Hope it helps,
    Goatey

Re: My first attempt tofp-Vampire Counts

@ Goat of Yuggoth thanks for the advice and support it really helps!!

So I have been doing a few bits for the tale. I have made five blood knights using choas knights not very original I know.
But here is a couple of pictures of the first painted one.

This guy has a space wolves head with some greenstuff hair. Hope you like him

Since making these knights I have found some graveguard shields which might be suitable than the chaos ones?

Will try and get better pictures when I put my stuff in the tale thread.

Thanks for looking, c+c more than welcome!

    Yay vampires!

I really like your chaos/black knight. But I agree that a graveguard shield would be more appropriate. Although the chaos shield isn't bad at all. The greenstuff work on the hair and teeth is great, though!

The blood and gore on the zombies/ghouls is great as well. Can't wait to see more of your army. Keep up the good work.

Nice. There really seems to be a lot of ghouls running around in the Fantasy-Logs these days

For the bases, I would recommend you to use sand with a bit more variation in the grain sizes. Public sandboxes (or kindergarten ones) usually have a good mix right from the go.

I also believe the vampire knight, though great looking, would benefit from having some other colour on him as well. Just picking out the pendants in some light bronze and/or doing something with the eyes on his shield would break it up a bit.

Spectacular work mate! Absolutely love the gore. Though, I have to agree with Zywus. That Blood Knight would only benefit from having just one more colour in there. Just to break up the large areas of grey-ish, and create some visual interest to an otherwise wonderful piece.
