Tale of Terrain Builders month 8 (and October's WIP)

The Tale of Terrain Builders 2011 – 2012 Month 8

This is the thread to post your work finished in September. After a week it becomes where you post your WIP for October. Hold off commenting about others work until then, as we want a bunch of shiny pictures , but we also want many comments later on. There is no dice roll mechanic for commenting, you should comment on each entry and share your thoughts.

    What is it all about?

The aim of The Tale of Terrain Builders is to help motivate those involved to start and complete enough scenery to fill a gaming board in the next twelve months.
Because not everyone can spare the same amount of time for various reasons, there are different levels of commitment. The standard, or Mens, level of commitment is to create a single, reasonably sized piece of terrain per month*. The lesser level of commitment is for the Boys category, and requires the completion of a piece of terrain every other month, but with the commitment to show progress each month!

The builders do this each month for the next 12 months, starting with their first post on the first day of March 2011, and finishing with their last post on the first day of February 2012. So we have this month, whilst everyone signs up, to gather scrap, parts, tools and otherwise get yourself ready to go with the first work in progress starting in February.

    * A single piece of scenery at least the size of a hill of building will be considered one piece. A barricade, tree, rock spire or similar would be considered too small on its own to count as a whole piece of scenery, however multiple such pieces would count as a single entry. If in doubt, terrain that covers a diameter of roughly 6” is what we are going for, but this is a loose definition. We certainly aren’t going to chide anyone because they only built an outhouse and a tree! After all, getting stuff done is the name of the game! Obviously, larger projects can be broken up over multiple days.*

A note on building whole Tables and Dioramas: Both building the actual playing surface for playing games on and Dioramas count for this tale. Dioramas can use the Boys level of commitment (unless they are truly large), and will count each month as long as appreciable progress is made each month. Tables, on the other hand, can range from a simple coating of flock to very elaborate set-ups. For these, if your planned table is pretty simple, use the boys category. If it is complex, use the mens. In either case, entries are judged on whether decent progress is made. Again, none of us are too anal about this. Just build and have fun and everything should be OK!

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with 1 piece of completed, usable scenery. That is 1 piece for 10 of the next 12 months.

At the beginning of each month a new thread will appear for the builders to post your previous month’s construction efforts and the rest of the builders to offer words of encouragement.

In twelve months we will all end up with enough Terrain to cover a table, which is awesome! (Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end will... it's harder than you think!)

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q : Am I too Late? Can I still join in?
A : No you are not too late. Yes you can still join in. Just post on this thread saying whether you want to build for the mens or boys category.

Q : Can I build more than one piece per month?
A : Yes, you can build as much as you like. However, please only post one of your pieces in the monthly thread to keep pace with everyone. Save one for the next month... take one off even. Of note though, is the * point above stating small scenery items count as 1/3rd of a whole piece. We would expect 3 of these as a single entry.

Q : What happens if I build a GIANT piece (like a huge defence laser)?
A : If you create a truly epic piece of scenery, then you're welcome to post it as s single months entry. However, you could (based on how many 'buildings/hills' in size you consider/count it as 2 or more month’s entries and post it at the end of that time.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Re: Tale of Terrain Builders month 8 (and October's WIP)

    And here are the participants:

WIP is for work in progress.
bigWip is for work in progress that counts as a full months work (Mens) or two for Boys
done is for finished pieces. This counts for two months work for Boys
done (+1) counts for two full months for Mens (4! for Boys)
Joker is a joker and J's are for default (not requested) jokers.

Please check for any mistakes I made.

@N810 The first boy and participant to finish this tale, you can still upgrade to become a men. The watch tower is already included in the table above and you would just need to finish another four pieces in the 5 months ahead.

    Little Joe: Mens

    THIS MONTH:
Orchenge finally done, I am very pleased with it. I left out the ivy as it looked already right and colourful enough (you can always add more but less is harder).

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Getting it done of course, I like the end result.
Lows: The pointy ends, oh the pointy ends and being inapt at taking pictures. I tried three days in a row, but only got slightly fuzzy ones in the sun.

    NEXT MONTH:
A mountain in two parts to redeem, but now I am off to a wedding so I look forward to many posts when I sober up.

After having it lie around in a rather sad and half-assembled stage I finally built my Fortified Manor:

Although I gave myself a bit of a headstart and put some paint on it already, I doubt that I'll be able to finish this thing in just one month, but we'll see.

Re: Tale of Terrain Builders month 8 (and October's WIP)

And now for something completely different...

Sorry ‘bout not posting any WIP shots last months. But I was working on a special piece and played it mostly by ea... Ehhh... By airbrush, I mean...

I promised the guys from the local train model club to paint a building for them, trying out different weathering techniques. So I bought a railway station, glued it together, fired up the compressor, and went berserk with my airbrush. Sadly, the slight variations on the colour of the brick-works aren’t really visible to my camera. You can see some of the dark exaggerated-for-the-purpose-of-showing-the-technique weathering on the front of the building, towards the ground. But you can’t see the handful of different yellow hues that went into shading the bricks, nor the fact that the bricks have been coated with a matt varnish whereas the roof tiles have been covered with gloss varnish to give them a more shiny look.

    Sigh...

I really need a better cam. And I really really really need a job to pay for it...

Oh well. I’ll do the best I can...

Actually, it felt good getting a bit away from my Flames of War table. It was a needed break from all the polystyrene and grass...

A JOKER for me this month. Haven't done much on the 40k front for the past month or so, been plenty busy outside it. Got a set of urban barricades / walls ready to clean up and paint when I'm finally in the mood to make stuff, other than that nothing big planned yet...!

Hmmm I guess I could post a mostly empty base as a wip, it is textured and primed,
not sure what I'm gonna put on it yet.

Love the house. Orchenge looks great and the fountain would look great in the middle of a city for the Tomb Kings to fight over.

Work got the better of me last month, hopefully I can get something done this week...though no promises that it will be fantasy/40k good chance it will be historical (ACW)

Re: Tale of Terrain Builders month 8 (and October's WIP)

Hi guys, it is getting a little emptie in this tale, what is the matter?

Not much to comment on, but here it is:

@Little Joe: Orchenge looks fine, i especially like that rust effect on one of the pillar tops. Know what you fell about that pics, it is a big problem. Found i got the best results with a tripod in the shadow in the evening, but that may be my cam. My photo setup is ok for minis, but terrain is much to large for it.

@ Xasil: Now that is breathtaking, love nearly everything about it.Only the fountain at the top isn`t to my taste, but i really don`t have an idea how to make it better. Is there water effect in the topmost basin?

@ EmperorNorton: I am looking forward to see what you will make of it.

@ f2k: It is nice, have you ever been to the Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg?

@ all the missing guys: DON`T LEAVE US ALONE!!!!!

Haven`t really decided what to do this month, started my TK-Army at the ToFP and began an Oasis together with the next TTW house and yesterday i ordered the new graveyard by TTW.

    Thanks.

No, sadly I haven’t. Some of the guys from the club have and they’re talking about going back next month. Unfortunately I 1) don’t do well on long drives (get the motion sickness ever so wickedly) and 2) probably won’t have time to go...

    Yeah...

Want's been going on? Lot's of guys missing...?

Oh well, who am I to talk? Haven't exactly been super active myself lately...

For this month i decided to do the oasis and start the TTW-house, think the oasis is a project for 2 or 3 days so i can have a headstart for the House in November.

Let me put it this way: I get seasick just by standing on a pier and looking at the water...

I'd never survive 750 kilometers in a car...

Strangely, I suffered really badly from it when I was a child, then it went away during my teens and now in my early thirties it's come back...

My project this month: A Chapel. I'm about half done.

I'll post more as I get done.

Hi, I'd like to rejoin the tale of terrain builders starting this month. I would like to join the mens category. Thanks!

To start, here is a WIP picture of a waste water reservoir I am building for this month.

Can I post more than one entry for each month? I have a few in progress right now.

Re: Tale of Terrain Builders month 8 (and October's WIP)

    I finally finished something!!

It's not much, but I guess I should show it... Perhaps by the end of it I will be HALF done with the Tale... Or perhaps I can make up later...

    Anyways, pictures!!

Finally finished the aptly named Dreadstone Blight. I didn't have access to the magic wheel for the right colours so it took me a while. But now I do and so it is DONE!

It's a nice model though. One of the nicer ones (because it is pretty generic) GW has released.

I just found out this is actually the official colour wheel with black and white added, which I think is a cool touch GW added to the magic system. Shows me they care!

Odd... Black is on top in the picture... Wonder if I did that on purpose... Hmm....

Here is a quick few WIP shots of my waste water reservoir for this month. I just need to add a few more layers of water (the water looks cloudy because it has not set yet). Comments and criticisms appreciated!

Re: Tale of Terrain Builders month 8 (and October's WIP)

I am sick so finally get to stay at home for a change, but not sick enough not to work on my mountain.
My sincere apologies for the lack of comments on my part.

@Xazil I like it, the composition of its elements is well done and the painting gives the stonework a nice shading. From what I can see the water effects look good but for all the cracks it could do with a bit of weathering and a bit more murky water.
On the other hand clean buildings seem to be rare on these plogs so nice and refreshing.

@EmperorNorton When that kit came out I was happy with the new age of terrain sets, but a bit disappointed by the thickness of the crenulations and all the supporting beams. It is however a nice set and I am looking forward to seeing you paint it.
I would not worry about time you are without jokers.

@f2k Well that is something new well executed. It makes me wonder if there are people out there using train buildings for their tabletops and if they come in all the scales needed. I always assumed them either to large or to small.
Always planning ahead I have plans for a building a portable table for skirmish games and am looking at Renedra or TTW to supply me with some buildings (any other places I might look).

@DAGabriel Great painting as always and a bit of pink thrown in as well. How about a wanted poster of a local highwayman on the wall (Name him Bravo)?

    @Thoume missing your pictures already…

    @N810 Please do.

@Ghost 1 Actual I have seen nothing yet. Maybe you could tell me about the use of railroad buildings in tabletop.

@Green Feevah! Looks good so far, keep updates coming.

@Narcissus Welcome back, I put you in boys for now as we do not have that many months left, but you are welcome to try. Whatever you do it will be a men’s amount.
If you have plans for more do not worry as I plan to go along with the tale after this one, but might make it a month break to align to half time in the big painting tales.
I see it got done and at a stunning level, I just love to see somebody scratch build and you certainly are up to it.
Is the rust done by weathering powders? While making the large tooth on orchenge a bit rust I found the painted effect fine but to the touch a very fine surface might have been better.

@Daniel36 A great paint job on a building with too many skulls on it for my taste, but looking great none the less. It is very well painted in deed. Looking at the excel sheet you should be fine for this tale.

And a research question to you all: “Does anybody have experience with these bolts?”
They look the right size to me for not having to make rivets.
