    54mm space marine revamp.

In 2008 I made this miniature from scratch

    And painted him like this

I ended up loosing faith in the project as I didn't really like the paintjob I started, so now almost 4 years later I decided it was time for a revamp.

First of I decided he needed some more detail on the shoulders, this was fortunately very easy thanks to forge world.

Then I decided that it was about time he got a really shiny paintjob, so I enlisted him at the emperors favorite boy-scouts, the Imperial Fists!

He then got send of to the artificers department for his new uniform colours...

And here's the first picture of him, I am still working on him so no worries he is by no means done yet, but I felt I reached a stage where he was good enough for showing off and to get some opinions on him before I finish him.

    To be continued...

    More pictures:

He is painted with my airbrush and I can make a quick and easy tutorial if anyone's interested in my recipe for the yellow. The armor chipping is done with the sponge technique and it still needs some highlights before it's done.

Very nice so far mate, I really like the finish on the yellow - the shading is spot on and the chipping very effective.

    Re: 54mm space marine revamp.

Very, very nice work. I particularly like the yellow hue you've used: bright enough to be interesting and heraldic, but muted enough to look military. The weathering is also nice and subtle, which helps to convey a sense of scale to the figure, breaking up the clean panels and immersing him in-universe.

The tonal balance and contrast is very strong at the moment, so I'd urge you to keep the eyes fairly dark, so that you don't lose the focal point here. A overall deep blue with fine highlighting will set off the colours and prove very eye-catching without losing the strength of the overall composition.

Thanks guys I was actually toying with the idea of making the eyes like the eyes of the marines on the old DA and BA codexes ( http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/7/...%20assault.jpg ), they're more of a tan/ golden colour but till dark, keeps his visage looking menacing and compliments the yellow. Not big on the blue eyes to be honest, but I was considering dark green and dark red as well.

Really like this (go figure ), though I'd suggest you go with green for the eyes, if you keep it a bottle-green, then it'll still be menacing.

I'll be watching this, så pas på!

Uhh be careful when using Danish on the public forum, people gets pissed cus they can't read it But cool, always nice to find a fellow Dane

You shouldn't by any chance be a member of emperors pride then ?? as we have talked to them about doing tournaments at ome point when we get our newly started club Sanctuary up at full speed. Then you might eventually end up seeing some of my work

    Re: 54mm space marine revamp.

Yeah, that's also why I won't say another word in Danish

But no, I don't know those guys. If you do get a tournament up and running, hit me up. I'll be stopping by Giant Fanatic 14 too, but I won't be playing. You?

Damn that thing looks awesome. Love the use of the termie shoulder pad as a knee pad. This is as good as the big Space Marine that FW did a few years back.

Hehe good, good :P I'll make sure you're notified if a tournament gets on the agenda And no I probably won't attend GF14 as I have a lot of work going on. I have just started on what will hopefully end up as a nice side career painting miniatures, I am currently working on a test piece for 9K painting if you hnow of him, he's the first full time painter in DK and I'll hopefully (if he's satisfied with my work) be doing some stuff for him on a freelance basis

thanks, I think the artificers where out of crux terminatus' at the time he was given terminator honors so he stole it from a midget terminator XD

So for those of you who's interested here's the recipe for my yellow on this guy:

It's all done with an airbrush.
The model is basecoated in vallejo grey primer and given a pre highlight in white. Then a coat of vallejo flat yellow was applied followed by a layer of golden yellow for richness.

Then the model was shaded with snakebite leather and highligted with vallejo flat yellow.

That's it, the weathering is chardon granite sponged on.

Sweet ! Darn, youve got some skills with gs too. ( so jealous )

The new paintjob does the model so much more justice.

Wow. as usual this is a stunning piece of artwork. As it was said earlier the yellow is just right for the Imperial Fists, although I do find it funny that someone who has a Iron Warriors army would paint up a imperial fist model? Maybe it's to be used as target practice....

Personally I would do green eyes, rather dark with a strong sharpe edgeing highlight along the top of the eye piece. Also are you keeping the helmet stripe white? How about the shoulder armour's edges'? Are they going to stay black?

The weathering looks spot on. Thank you for sharing this with us. =o]

Please don't question my loyalties.... It could get messy

No but seriously, I like the imperial fists a lot, and I love painting yellow so that's a bonus as well. And even though I have a soft spot for the Iron Warriors my true love is still the mechanicus

I'll probably settle on the green eyes as they seem to appeal to me the most. The white stripe is to denote him as a veteran, as I thought a full white helmet would look a bit weird. So I made a white stripe on his shoulder and helmet as a variation on the sayings in the revered codex astartes on veteran helmets. He also have terminator honors,a few iron skulls and the imperial laurel as befits a veteran.
The edges of his shoulderplates will stay black, as he is assigned to the 5th company atm (again codex astartes) which was mainly because I thought the black looked cool.
It will of course receive proper highlights and weathering too
