Good afternoon all,
I hope I've posted in the right thread... please let me know if not...
Well, after some deliberation - and in no small part to getting my hands on the Forgeworld Modelling Masterclass book – I’ve decided to start a diorama set in the 40k universe.
If anyone else is thinking of doing this I would urge you to give the book a go. It not only has some truly brilliant photography of existing tanks/scenes etc that have been completed by the authors – Phil Stutcinskas and Mark Bedford, masters both, but it also has little hints and tips about going about the actual modelling and painting.
As well as that resource I will be delving into forums such as this one and others – DakkaDakka for example.
One thing I have realised that anything that you want to make someone has probably tried to give it a go before you! I spent many fruitful hours researching making my own barb wire, painting red, using oil paints in scenery, airbrush use and a hundred other things.
So, on to the actual scene of choice. I started with a premise of a broken line. Warriors trying to hold against those who wish to cause them harm... in a lovely bloody way. My first thoughts were Imperial Guard and Khornate Terminators. The few against the many. A terminator lord holding aloft a stricken guardsmen while taking fire from his squadmates.
I still want to do this scene BUT unfortunately the cost proved something of a stumbling block. A new set of Termies with FW conversion kits etc would run pretty steep as well as the IG Cadian squad, again with FW conversion kits.
SO, back to the drawing board, or more fittingly the bits box. I have a lot of spare Space Wolves marine bits kicking about and a brand new box of Khorne Berserkers... so my armies were effectively chosen for me!
I’m going to start small – my base board is approx. 10inches x 6inches and have a fairly simple set up. A single ridge with sand bags and barb wire woven between dead trees and posts. The Berserkers have broken – or leapt – the line and are setting about the Space Wolves with their usual bloodthirsty fervour.
I had the image of a leaping Berserker taking a SW in the neck with his chain axe... the miniature suspended only by its hand on the haft of its weapon, curls of barb wire around its foot where it has leapt the line.
So that is my premise... I will update regularly as I go along.
Next post will be the design itself as I see it...
Thanks all...
KR
