    The Battle of Pilgrim's Ashes

Hey everyone. This is where I hope to start my project log, which will chronicle my work on the various imperial factions that I'm interested in working on. I have about 5-6 thousand points of imperial guard, with about 1,500 points of DKoK and the rest in the Altairan First, a regiment of my own making which will someday make it onto this log. For now I'm working on the first company of my space marine chapter, the Dark Ravens. All the armies are modeled around participating in the Battle of Pilgrim's Ashes, when heretic forces launched a major assault on the capitol of the Altair Sector, Altair Prime. So lets jump right in.

The events that set the Battle of Pilgrim's Ashes were initiated, like many events in the 41st millennium, long before the actual battle took place. In the close of the 38th millennium, on the Serra's World, the final resting place of the saint that originally lead the crusade to claim the Altair sector in the name of the emperor, a massacre at a small coastal abbey would set into motion a secret conflict that would eventually see its climax at the beginning to the First Altair Sector War. Inquisitor Lord Byron Serren requested the personal aid of Dark Raven's chapter master Byron Forwin. The Dark Raven's had in the past often been willing to lend their aid to fellow imperial forces, and so they did so on Serra's World. Unfortunately, the Dark Raven's were entering a trap. Serren presented evidence that the tenants of Carfax Abbey had fallen to the dark gods and were attempting to summon a host of demons. Trusting Serren's intel, the Dark Raven's slaughtered all who they found in the abbey, and deep within it found a number of bound demon hosts.

Serren, an Istvaanist Radical had lured the space marines to this place to initiate the tremendous conflicts that wrack the Altair Sector even today. It was he, not the abbey tenants who had summoned and bound the demons, and he now set them upon the space marines that had come to offer him their aid. In the ambush, Forwin was fatally wounded. Despite the suppress attack, the terminators of the first company were able to slay all but one of the demons. The one that escaped, Shavra Kar, was bound in the body of a young girl, clad in a simple white dress. Kar escaped the abbey, initiating a private conflict between herself and the Dark Raven's that would last for the next two thousand years.

The Dark Raven's never could catch Kar, and though they came close a score of times she always slipped away. That is, until just four years ago, when she allowed herself to be captured by the Dark Raven's. Despite the betrayals of the past, the Dark Raven's had continued to work closely with other imperial organizations, and upon capturing Kar they contacted the Inquisition. The Dark Raven's gave Kar up to a Black Ship, where she then wrought havoc upon it and escaped. Taking with her, a band of acolytes who she would then use to rally her forces.

This event marked the beginning of the War of Shadows, a secret war fought between the forces of the Inquisition and the Dark Raven's against Kar's increasing power and influence. Much of this secret conflict was fought upon the imperial worlds of the Altair Sector without anyone every gaining knowledge of it. Over time, the Inquisition fell more and more behind as Kar moved across the sector rallying her forces. As this occurred the Inquisition began to prepare to the war that was to come, but they did not act fast enough.

Simultaneously attacking from the borders of the Gorgon's Reach to the trailing edge of the sector, and from the rimward edge Void Fields, as well as from the turncoat forgeworld of Lillith, the armies of the archenemy drove into the heart of the sector. Just weeks after the first shots were fired on the Sector's borders, the Archenemy fleet was trading broadsides with the Imperial Navy above Altair Prime. When the defenses were broken, and heretic drop ships lowered themselves into Altair Prime's atmosphere, torpedo salvos and missile barrages plummeted past them.

The bombardment was heaviest at the Pilgrim's Stair, a famous landmark from Altair's history, where Saint Serra had risen out of the tide and walked among the beleaguered colonists. Since that time a great stair had been erected, which now lead from the shores of the Sea of Serra to the point where she laid a golden aquila in the grey sand, marking the birthplace of the sector. Each day, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims walk the stair, from the shore, to what is now the Basilica of the First Dawn. They day that the enemy attacked was now exception, in fact, even greater droves of imperial civilians took the walk that day, praying to their saint and to the emperor for deliverance. After the orbital bombardment had ceased, it was said that the ashes of the dead were so many, that they rose to the knee.

This space marine army is the Dark Ravens force that deployed from orbit to reinforce the beleaguered imperial forces on the ground.

So, here is what I have of the force so far. Most of what I still need to obtain is drop pods. The army list uses Wolf Guard, even though the icons and look are closer to that of the dark Angels.

I also have a number of photo's taken of individual terminators that I've painted. I'm not really very good at painting, and everything is an attempt to get things to tabletop quality. Of course any advice or criticism is appreciated.

    Hi!

Nice start, normally red and green suffer from the Xmas Factor but you've pulled it off quite well! Also loving the little bit of background, the thread title drew me straight in- so intriguing!

Tips wise I swear by washes, they're such a quick fix it's rude not to use them. In your case you could use badab black on the green and Devlan mud on the red. Follow this with a highlight of snot green and blood red respectively and you'll be really pleased, trust me!

    Keep up the good work

Re: The Battle of Pilgrim's Ashes

Thanks Memnon. I'll see about getting the washes and paints i need to do that highlighting. A few questions, since i don't know much about painting. For the highlights, should i paint thin line's around edges or do really light drybrushing? And for the washes, do I apply those everywhere or just in low/indented areas of the model. I think I'm going to get the whole army painted before I move on the experiments with more advanced stuff.

Here are a few more pictures of the terminator's I've painted. This time we have some special weapons and the sergeant. I'd like to do lighting on the sergeant's sword, but I don't currently have the colors for it. I'm thinking Ice Blue followed by Skull White.

What would people think about dipping these models? (/Brace's self against artistic retribution.) I know its kind of lame and frowned upon, but the idea isn't so much to have gloriously painted models. I love building them, and I love playing the game. Painting has always kind of been a horrible chore that I've only recently found the will to struggle through. Would these models benefit from a dip, or should I bite the bullet and learn to highlight?

Thanks for any help and advise.

    Hey

Washes are an all over job. I'd badab black all the green and silver and devlan mud the red and cream. Wait till one is dry before doing the other! This is basically controlled dipping but you won't get such extreme shading; I'm not a fan of the dipped look...

Once dry get a fine detail brush and go round all the edges with snot green, blood red and chainmail respectively.

Check my log in my signature for what you can do with washes. I promise you'll never look back!

I think that actually taking the time and painting the shades and highlights would be a far better alternative to dipping the models. Having a fairly basic base coat, shade, highlight technique would make them look so much better and having a better looking army might make the painting seem like less of a chore when the compliments start rolling in.

Re: The Battle of Pilgrim's Ashes

Today we've got some pictures of the army's current commander. Each member of the command squad is going to be one of the detailed terminator characters that are available. Logan Grimnar will be represented by Marneus Calgar's body (Ultra marines symbols removed) and Lysander's arms. The thunderhammer will be converted to a flail, and the arm that should get a storm shield will be given one of the Grey Knight terminator storm bolters.

The heavy flamer terminator will use Huron's model, with the lightning claw converted to be a power fist (probably from the FW character upgrade set).

Arjac Rockfist will use the terminator captain model. The sword hand will be replaced with a Deathwing storm shield, and a thunder hammer will be obtained from a regular assault terminator.

The two storm bolter and sword wielding member of the squad are will use Commander Culln and Lysander. Culln was a very basic conversion, as the following images show. A deathwing sword icon was used to cover the chest scorpion, the scorpion on the storm bolter was simply removed, and the right shoulder pad was replaced with a Dark Angels one. Lysander is a bit more complicated, and i'll go into details on him in a post later this week.

For now here are some pictures of the model using Culln. At the moment he is my force commander, but as the squad gets filled out he will work his way back to a mere terminator of the first squad.

I also have a very lame question. How does one post pictures without using thumbnails? I'd rather just have the full sized pictures in each post, and I've seen people do it in other project logs.

Thanks for any advice or criticism.

Re: The Battle of Pilgrim's Ashes

Hello! It's been a pretty productive week. I finished painting the two terminator squads, as well as my dreadnaught. I'll try to get pictures of those (I don't own a camera) and post them up some time next week. For now i have some pictures of two of the command squad guys that are in progress.

Lysander will have the Deathwing sword and storm bolter as shown in the first image. The Imperial Fist icons on his shin and chest plate have been removed. The piece on his shin is a forge world Dark Angels icon. I folded it around the shin by heating it in water and then pressing it against the model for a few minutes. It doesn't fit quite perfectly, but the picture makes it look a little worse than it is and i kind of like that it doesn't conform perfectly. I'm thinking that I'll probably put a small sword on the chest piece, but i want to wait until I've replaced the head. I haven't yet figured out how to do this. I need a cavity large enough to put the robed company champion head in, so if anyone has ideas on how to accomplish that I would really appreciate it.

Also pictured is the model I'm using or Arjac Rockfist. Nothing fancy, but at some point I will need to get rid of his helmet-less head as well and replace it with something less susceptible to sniper fire.

As always, advice and criticism is appreciated.

Great stuff! As stated before, good work on the green and red without making it look like the north pole is invading. You going to dedicate all those guard to the Emperor, or might the call of the gods pull a few of them into the Chaos logs?

Re: The Battle of Pilgrim's Ashes

I have always been tempted by the dark whispers of interesting modeling opportunities, but every time I come close to staring a traitor force I think about how all that money could go into an Imperial army and I could play apocalypse games that have a more cohesive narrative (thought they tend to be my guard vs six different non-imperial non-sensical allies). I've been thinking about starting a terminator army for years now, and it was just this last summer that I finally made the first purchase.

To get big pictures, you have to reference a img. code from a phto in a Web based photo album, I use Photobucket.com which is free, there are many free ones out there. Just open an account, upload your pics and then copy and paste the image code into the plog page and it will do the rest for you. Photobucket gives you the image code amongst others so give it a try.

Re: The Battle of Pilgrim's Ashes

Big update. First we have my dreadnaught. Painting him was kind of exasperating, I have a very hard time getting paint to spread evenly over large spaces. It's especially apparent on the dreadnaught's left arm.

I've also put some work in on one of the sergeant's sword. It's not the finest lightning but I'm happy enough with how it turned out.

And work in progress on the assault squad.

Re: The Battle of Pilgrim's Ashes

I've also got some pictures of my Death Korps army. It's a combined arms unit of the 1098th Siege Infantry Regiment and the 1099th Armored Regiment. These regiments weren't actually at the Battle of Pilgrim's Ashes, but participate in the Seige of Lillith, a Forge World in the Altair sector that fell to the Archenemy just before the assault on Altair Prime.

So here is the full army shot, along with a bastion I finished last week.

Here's a squad that was painted by a friend of mine. I've tried to convince him to paint the whole army but he seems resistant to the idea of painting that many models that don't belong to him.

And two of my heavy stubber teams. The third one is broken and the base isn't very interesting so I chose to leave it out.

And heavily converted grenadier with a demo charge. The handle on the demo charge kind of sucks a little, but in real life it's so small that it doesn't look quite so bad.

Finally here are two engineers. They're among my favorite individuals in the army.

Re: The Battle of Pilgrim's Ashes

Here's my first run at painting a Krieg trooper. He's one of the gunners from the gorgon, I figured it would be good to start with him because he's less noticeable than his fellows. I made a few changes from the original scheme, which is most obvious with the lining of the trench coats being red. I tried to emulate the color of the helmets as best I could, but I have no idea how the original look was achieved. All in all I'm very happy with how he turned out. I don't have any brown, so i couldn't do his suspenders, or dry brush his coat tails but once I've got that I'll finish up the leather bits and dirty him up a bit.

I've also added a lot of background in to the first post, so if you haven't taken a look at that you should.

Side by side with the original scheme.

Re: The Battle of Pilgrim's Ashes

And now for pictures of the first, washed and highlighted terminator squad. This is squad Prayto, who were deployed to initiated the counter push to re-take fallen fortifications to the north east of the Pilgrim's stair. With the aid of squad Prayto, elements of the 5th Company, Altairan First were able to re-capture area and establish a formidable firebase where from Altairan artillery was able to lend its fire to the more desperate regions of the battle. Unfortunately, battle brother Iago (seen here with a simple heraldry pad) was committed to the Emperor's Grace in the storming of bunker complex PW-342-A when a lucky shot with a melta-gun struck him in the chest.

And here is a close in shot of Sergeant Prayto himself.

Re: The Battle of Pilgrim's Ashes

This week brings us shots of Squad Lekken and Brother Mordain. This squad and dreadnaught were dropped directly onto the Pilgrim's Stair and formed the bulwark that halted much of the Archenemy's armored units early on in the engagement until the truly massive war machines of Heritor Modai (A student of the late Heritor Asphodel) joined the battle. Brother Astarim, pictured here equipped with a cyclone missile launcher was credited with the destruction of ten armored vehicles in the the first day of the battle. This squad depended heavily on supply drops from drop pods and thunderhawk transporters as the battle raged on.

Here we see Sergeant Lekken, his power sword alight with electric energy.

And some more detailed images of Brother Astarim.

Brother Mordain has been interred in a dreadnaught for nearly two centuries. In a past age, he was captain of the Dark Raven's 1st company, and was grievously wounded in a boarding action against ork raiders while on patrol in the Void Fields.

Re: The Battle of Pilgrim's Ashes

Also recently completed is Cabel Morridan. At present, he's my force commander, but as time goes on he'll be downgraded to one of the terminator's in the squad that accompanies the chapter master. He was a real labor. I painted him in one sitting, while I watched the entirety of Lonesome Dove (6 hours) and I'm really pleased with how he turned out.

And here's the whole army thus far.

At present, everything I have that is going into the 1,500 point list is painted (The assault squad will not be featured in the list).

Very nice work there, but do you intend on giving your marines a chapter symbol? That would look nice and fill in that space on the shoulders you got there.

Re: The Battle of Pilgrim's Ashes

    Thanks igneous

Chaplain, I've considered a few things. One would be doing simple patterns like splitting or quartering the pads. Another alternative could be doing simple wings like the ones on Culln's storm bolter or sergeant Lekken's pauldron (really hard to see in the pictures).

    Another options is these:

The small one's are about the right size to go on a terminator's shoulder pad, but they look like they belong with the Raven Guard and I'm worried that the mixed iconography will seem confused on the models when they're presented in a group.
