Hey guys,
I was wondering how I would go about weathering Eldar vehicles. The thing that has stumped me is that they are not made of 'metal' hence chipping and rust probably wouldn't be appropriate.
So how would I weather wraithbone objects?
An off topic fluff question:
Would they even weather? Being organic materials and an extremely advanced race would they self heal?

They'de still accumulate dust and muck over the course of a battle and Wraithbone can crack as well if hit hard enough.
I do wonder if it might bruise....that might be a rather cool way to "weather" them?

I can't imagine why you would want to weather Eldar vehicles- doesn't seem to fit their aesthetic at all to me...
battle damage if you must, but weathering? I wouldn't...
Do they have anti-dust/dirt/rain mark/fading armour and paint?
Weathering doesn't just mean rust, paint chips and battle damage.

Look to aircraft weathering. Exhaust "soot", oil/lubricant stains, worn paint where technicians and crew walk on the craft to get to where they need to. The Eldar keep clean craft and maintain them perfectly, but they aren't going to focus on them looking good in the middle of a campaign. They're too pragmatic for that.

Fluff contradicts fluff.. go with what looks cool but id refrain from rust effects but stuff like dirt, snow, etc would look cool

Personally, I like to see Eldar all shiny and sparkly and clean and impervious to elements (which is part of the reason I really like Harlequins). But some of the weathered stuff looks pretty damn good, I have to say.

In stead of metal the underlying colour would be the colour you use to paint the wraithbone. Probably a bone colour. Make's sense doesn't it?
@spekkiebig: I've been thinking about that for quite some time now. It is one possibility to have the wraithbone structure become visible under the chipped paint, but then on the other hand, if Bonesingers are able to shape wraithbone, why shouldn't they also be able to change its inherent colour? In that case, there would be no bone colour underneath, as the wraithbone itself had adopted another colour.
I think we would either need to know how exactly bonesinging works, or simply do as elbacone suggests: do what looks cool.
But there's certainly no metal under the paint!
To echo an above comment, look at aircraft weathering, particularly the scorch marks around exausts, and the way dust streaks across wings.
While Eldar vehicles arnt going to rust, just like aircraft they're still going to accumulate dust in the air by zooming around a lot.
While Eldar probably go to great lengths to keep their vehicles pristine, there will still be some build up during the course of a battle. Thing is to make it subtle.
Would have thought they would accumulate dust and dirt like any other vehicle, aircraft would probably a good model to adopt as has been said. Maybe exhaust stains would not be appropriate, but chipping on the underside and around the intakes would be apparent. Perhaps wraith bone chips to a bone colour or if of uniform colour then the surface might fade/darken on exposure to the atmosphere making the chips show as darker/lighter patches of the base colour.

Personally I wouldn't chip the paint (I assume they have awesome sealants) but I'd go with the usual grime and dust. Only one campaign's worth, but even a few days of action would show.
It should be noted that Eldar vehicles aren't made entirely of wraithbone. It provides the basic mainframe and energy grid, but engines, armour, weapons etc are made from a variety of other psychoplastic substances. It's a common error.
If that's not enough, then note how Marine armour is made from "ceramite" which presumably isn't metal, but that doesn't stop almost everyone from putting rust on it.
Ceramite is one material used, along with plasteel and adamantium, so similar to the point made about eldar using other materials aside from wraithbone.
Which is interesting in itself. Eldar make a lot of use of wraithbone... but it stands to reason they might make use of other conventional materials too. Dark Eldar dont make extensive use of wraithbone (given the lack of psykers), but presumably they took the existing Eldar expertise in conventional materials with them. It wouldn't surprise me if the Craftworlders used eldar sci fi alloys alongside wraithbone. Afterall, there could be utilities that wraithbone isn't appropriate for.
Even living creatures get 'weathered'. Dust and dirt build up, some parts fade or darken and damaged areas show scars. Personally, I'd go with chips and cracks painted using darker and lighter variants of the base colour, so it looks like there is some texture, but not like there is a layer of paint to be peeled back.
In my mind, if it looks appropriate for something formed from solid stone, it's probably cool for an eldar vehicle.
Having forgotten about my plans, I think it would be best if I used the color or closest approximation to my basing color(Calthan Brown or a nice milk chocolate brown). Put some dusty stuff on the underside and leading edges, soot/discoloration from exhaust (As I see it even the most advanced races would still be having the same issues with gas turbines operating at different load cycles, altitudes and in ground level conditions sucking dust and what have you) and I wonder how the skin material would behave after a glace from a lascannon or an autocannon (would it heal and leave a scar?).
I see the material in use as similar to our current plastics where the color is part of the plastic.
Now a wraithlord would be an interesting concept, what would they look like after a campaign?
