    Tomb Kings in The Southlands

Getyrom have always fancied the place that is known as The Southlands, and all the magical mysteries and treasure that's been left there by the old ones. As peace was upon the land of Nehekara under king Settras' rule he no longer felt the worries of having to defend his necropolis, it was the perfect time. Settra himself shared Getyroms' urge to not only discover but also conquer what land they both thought was theirs to rule, and thus Settra bestowed Getyrom with the honor of being his first commander in the crusade against The Southlands. As such begun Getyroms' part of what would be the first golden age of nehekara.

The Southlands were however not easily conqured; already inhabited there was the race known as the Lizardmen. Even though they were an inferior race, according to Getyrom, they put up quite a good fight. Slowly, the war raged on, and slowly Getyrom managed to push back the opposition. However, as he pushed further into the lands of Lustria the gaining of ground became much slower as the little lizards, and to some extent savaging orcs and goblins, prayed on the smaller regiments of reinforcements sent from Nehekara. These were harassed and weakened so severely that sometimes they even disappeared to never be heard of again.

In order to ensure the safe arrival of his reinforcements Getyrom was forced to a small tactical retreat. He travelled west, until he could touch the sea. Here he built his great harbor city where future reinforcements over sea could safely aid his cause. It took many years to get the proper foothold, and of course a new necropolis had to be raised to show who ruled the Southlands, or at least the western seaboard. As the city started to flourish war again prospered.

Years past and the war never seemed to come to an end. Getyroms' death had been prolonged by his loyal mortuary cult priests, but it eventually fell upon him. His city, however, still flourished with life as his sons took command after him, continuing on a quest that was their fathers will. Generation after generation the war continued and the city expanded, untill the great plague outburst in Nehekara. Since the sea routes had a very close connection to the land of Nehekara Getyroms' realm in The Southlands was innevitably affected by the poison as it had stunk the food and beverage supplies that arrived with the shipments. Not many weeks passed before the kingdom he had built was taken of all life.

Even as his great city was empty the lizards did not enter; if they were simply afraid to enter or forbidden to enter for their wise leader slaans is unknown. What is known is that the slaans hated Getyrom and his city for the war he threw upon them. In revenge, and to make sure the poison that dwelled there would never reach their villages, they cast the great leveler on his city, forever burrowing it under water.

When Nagash then cast the Great Awakening Getyrom once again walked the forests of The Southlands, filled with rage for what had become of his noble kingdom he seeked revenge on the living. He Commanded his priests to raise his army and once again swore to conquer what was rightfully his.
And the world did tremble, as Getyrom walked to war...

Hello there This is my log of Tomb King Getyrom and his quest in the Southlands. At first this will be focused around the modelling and painting of my army, but as it grows I might also share some gaming experiance (in the form of battle reports & tactics) for those of you interested.

I intend to keep this first post updated with the latest army shot along with any army list(s) that I aim consctructing/currently have, along with army fluff and anything else I might find relevent and useful for the growth of this army!

I've got a fantastic camera, but I'm still a novice when it comes to photographing. Hopefully something I'll also learn in this blog!

It looks good. Your base looks particularly good. Very swampy.

Looks really good, I like the paintwork on the bow. What are you using for the bowstring?

I went through the sewing box in my home and found this beige/white sewing thread coil. It was the only one made of polyester, the rest were made of cotton, which won't do since it probably would just get unwinded or destroyed since its kinda fragile. I found the color to fit nicely anyway so without much figuring I simply took it and tried it. And I am please with the result (my first attempt).

Havn't been able to do much the last couple of days since exams have been beating me around. Tomorrow is the last one, however, and I might get something done. Anyway, I'd thought I'd share the inteded 2400pts list I'm building currently (I've been swapping around alot to get to use all the models I want in my army whilst not making it a weak list). Any tips or ideas are very much appreciated.

Bonus points for adding a string to the bowman. Great base too. Keep up the good work.

Re: Tomb Kings in The Southlands

So this is something that has played on my mind since I first got into WHFB (some 10+ years ago now)...just how fiddly is it to put strings on bows like this? And do you use a specific sort of string?

Good work so far. Looking forward to more pics.

The only thing I'd criticize about is the quivers. The straps are far too wide for these new skeletons, they look absolutely overwhelmed by them. Another option would be Beastmen Ungor quivers, smaller and look better. The only problem with those is that they don't have straps, so you'd have to tediously sculpt your own. But it would add 200%

I like the bases and the bone, although you could paint on some moss that the bones have gathered over time. The jungle isn't as dead as the inhabitants

    @tarrym
Yeah, it's amazing how something as small as a bowstring adds so much to a model. I think you can use a great variety of materials, as long as it's sturdy enough. I found a 100% polystyrene sewing thread laying around the house, in beige/white color so I was rather lucky. All other sweing thread coils I found were in cotton and I'm pretty sure that cotton will break/unwind after some time. Oh well, I guess time will tell! For being my first bowstring, and second attempt at water effect, I'm very pleased.

    @Goat of Yuggoth
The bone is also extremely simple! Skull White undercoat with a basecoat of dhened stone and then devlan mud wash, and that's pretty much it. I choose to highlight a few choosen smaller areas (elbows, knees, teeth) with just dheneb stone after the wash but essentially you could skip it if you want to save some time.

As for the quiver straps, it hasn't bothed me really, at all. Not untill you said so I started to think about it and you might be right. However, I think the overall result is so stunning (compared to the normal dull TK archers, VC skeletons are just sooooo much better looking) that it won't bother too much. Especially as I got half of my archers built already I don't feel like swapping halfway. Thanks for the tip though.

I also think I'm swapping around the army list some. The new idea I have is based on that a certain Instant Mould plan I have works (which I recieved today!!) so I'll wait and see how it turns out tomorrow

No sweat mate, just wanted to share some insight

And probably it will come handy in some point, I've found out that many of the advice I've been given turns up in an unexpected way onto my projects! (ie. the more you know!)

Anyways, I'd love to see another painted model, I'll settle for PiPs!

    Cheers,

Absolutely love TK armies using VC skellies. I am building one myself (tomb Kings of Babilux on warseer) and I can personally attest to the trickiness of the archer conversion, but as you demonstrated, the results speak for themselves. I'm loving the jungle theme and hope to see it develop. I will be watching in anticipation. I would love to see if you can find a solution for cavalry based on VC skellies. Im still working out that issue myself...

Re: Tomb Kings in The Southlands

Yeah, I'm currently contemplating if I want to include some horse archers in my list or not. I'm very much for them but in that case I need some good base for the models. I think I'll wait and see what we get with the new VC minis comming in january/february!

I had my first test game today (vs my pals very interesting Ogre Kingdoms, who's got his own project thread here). I ran a very similar list to the one you find in the OP, but I swapped the tomb guard for 8 ushabti with great bows, the death mask for some armour and the two units of skeleton warriors for a one unit with spears + light armour and a small unit of horse archers.

No pictures, since there was a lot of proxies

Overall it was a draw (with 500vps or so in my favour) and it got me thinking alot about what I really think about my list. I was very disappointed with the lore of light overall, and the casket was a total disaster (though it did survive). Ushabtis were actually very good, but I'm not convinced on them, since their performance is kinda dependant on wether I get smiting or not (which I did this game). The hierotitan was fantastic.

So I got a lot to think about. The archers will stay however and so I guess I'll continue painting them. I've got the first unit filler about done, only last touching up steps of water effect and bow strings left. I'll show you in a day or two when it's ultimately finished.

Re: Tomb Kings in The Southlands

    Just a small update

And a preview of what I have planned to be next

I plan to extend their bodies and make a head swap since the one that comes with the box looks ridiculous. I'm trying to figure out what to use to get a more real snake look, any ideas? Closest thing I've found that is of similar size is kroxigor heads, but they come 1 per blister and are in metal (which I hate working with). I'll try making my own sculpt but sculpting is not my strong side so I don't count on it.

I've also tinkered alot with my army list and will update the OP with it.

Hmmmm... would a river troll head work on the giant snake ???
Should be about the size of the kroxigor head.

Or maybe one of those 5th edition plastic Saurus heads, those look kinda snake like.

Actually I think that river troll heads will fit perfectly, thanks for the tip! I've got a friend who got a pair and I will "borrow" them to see how well they fit before I order some. Unfortunately, they are remodeling his house so I have to wait untill mid december before I get them.

I've had lots of school work and I've been rather ill the last few weeks, so activity has unfortunately been very low.

    Anywho... This showed up today

I thought I would be done with my archers before my order would arrive, but I guess not. They're turning out great though.

Hmm pictures are a bit blurry... damn...

I've entered a doubles tourney with my ogre friend, at 1200pts a piece in february so I guess you'll see some more painting from me in the near future.

    stay tuned!
