I wouldn't take heavy gauss cannons on the stalkers, I would either stick with the heat ray if you want to target vehicles or the particle weapon for anti-infantry, the heavy gauss is too expensive for me for a 1shot gun even if it is twinked. The heat ray is almost certainly going to serve you better anyway because the solar pulses should allow you to close to your optimum killing range without taking too much damage.

The problem with the heat ray is you get one shot, then your engaged for the rest of the game.

Err, two shots, and the problem with the heavy gauss is its not worth the same cost as the heat ray, let alone15pts more.

Particle shredder wins in any case IMHO.

Still I think I'd rather spend my cash on wraiths or blades to begin with. Zahndrek is a dead cert

The reason for the heavy guass cannon is the range and its ability. I want everything else to be twin linked. 36 inches is allot better then 24. I don't want anything near my stalker. For the melta to be work I need to be within 12 which I don't want to be. I want my immortals to have TL at range.

If you're bringing the stalker for twin linking give it a shredder, it can hit more than one unit, and most importantly it's anti-infantry. Bringing a dedicated anti-tank weapon to twin link your anti-infantry fire doesn't make sense because the targeting array only twin links vs targets it hits, great as it would be to get twin linked for all your gauss and tesla shots against the land raider your heavy gauss cannon failed to deal with...

Generally Necron lists don't bring enough ranged anti-tank to make it worth twin linking with an anti-vehicle weapon.

I don't know, a lot of players run lance chrono courts, and maybe some HDestroyers, which would benefit very nicely from twin linked. That being said, I'm not a fan of the spider myself, but I think it could work.

My hope is that 6th will allow walkers to walk out of melee or give the thing the equiv of dreadnought close combat weapons.

    Indeed.

Buying particle shredder to twin-link stuff is just WAAAAAYYY TOO expensive and there are cheaper ways to get HGCs. As it stands, heatrays are the best weapon on it. The problem is always the inevitable CC. Without DCCW or PW, it's terrible for 150pt.

Re: Tactica: 5th edition Necrons codex.

Hi guys, I'm starting a Necron army and am thinking of the following 1500pt list to start with.

HQ - Overlord; Warscythe, Semiternal weave,Mindshackle scarabs
Royal court - 2 Crypteks; Eldritch Lance, Solar pulse. 1 Lord; Warscythe, Mindshackle scarabs, Res orb
    HQ2 - Anrakyr the Traveller
Royal Court - 2 Crypteks; Eldritch Lance, Solar pulse
Troops - 5 Warriors; Ghost Ark (2 crypteks here)
5 Warriors; Ghost Ark (2 crypteks here)
10 Tesla Immortals (HQs and Lord here)
    Fast - 5 Wraiths; 3 whips, 2 particle caster
    Heavy - 2 Annihiliation Barges
    Total 1490

I thought the arks would give the crypteks some protection and allow me to target two vehicles if needed. The main blob should have plenty of hitting power and has Anrakyr to take over an enemy tank for a turn.
The wraiths could just follow the others and counter attack or ambush any juicy targets.

Any input or comments would be great.

surely the only real justification for including the stalker is that it looks cool? If you're using it for twin-linking then for 150 points you could get another unit of immortals/ whatever it is you would be twin-linking from?

This is the problem, it looks awesome! The problem people are having is making that model work for them. Most posters agree it being overpriced for what it does, I want one now I have seen the model, but making it at least work as best as possible is a bonus right? I am torn between all the weapons at the moment. The large blast seems to generate the better results/ synergy for my tesla immortals.

Tomb Stalkers are not for every list, but I like them. I play a semi-mobile gunline style list, and they fit a lot better than my other elite choice options. First rule for playing this kind of list is having good target priority. You pick the best/most dangerous targets, and you fire away at them until they are neutralized, and then pick the next target and repeat. This is what Triarch Stalkers excell at. A 2 shot MM is nice in and of it's self. But even if you don't get the melta bonus, firing at range to mark a unit helps ensure the stuff that has to die, dies. Land Raider? Fine, shoot the triarch stalker at it. I now have 3 tank hunting hvy destroyers that can fire at it. Odds are good it's either going down, or going to be in a world of hurt. I have a unit of marines about to assault my warrior squads? Light them up! Two rapid fire squads and the stalker should gut the majority of the squad. It's also handy to have a flamer against things like Orks and Nids, and AV13 can let it tarpit a lot of things when it comes down to it.

It's not to say that they don't have their faults. The heat ray should have been broken down into 2 guns, one for the melta, and one for the flamer. They could also use power weapons or DCCW's. Heck, I would settle for rending, lol. They are probably priced 10-20 points to much for what they are, but over all I don't think they are that bad at all, and have always been useful in my experience.

You are talking about the Tomb stalker, or the triarch stalker? I'm assuming the triarch right?

The tomb stalker is going to be really cool in a Canoptek themed list for a kind of march of the mechanical insects, it's a shame you can't take canopteks in a troop slot

Re: Tactica: 5th edition Necrons codex.

So Lets assume I was dropping both Stalkers from my list. What do you guys think would be best for those 300 points.

    Zahndrekh

    Telsa Immortals x 10

    Telsa Immortals x 10

    Telsa Immortals x 10

    Stalker ( heat ray )

    Stalker ( heat ray )

    Wraiths x 6 ( 3 with coils and 1 particle )

    Wraiths x 6 ( 3 with coils and 1 particle )

    Annihilation Barrage ( telsa )

    Annihilation Barrage ( telsa )

    Scarabs Swarms x 10

    Spyder x 3 ( 2 Claw aray and 1 Partical Beamer )

    Exactly 2000 points

My vision is to have the wraiths and scarab farm rush threats while the immortals and barges stay back and unload. If i play an opponent with a fast army then I bubble wrap my troops and play the army as a solid unit of destruction lol

Re: Tactica: 5th edition Necrons codex.

get a lance/chrono court? all the good slots are filled
cut back on one of the immortals squads and get them a ghost ark to ride in too

Re: Tactica: 5th edition Necrons codex.

    a bargelord then?
and with the extra points get 2 destruction crypteks with solar pulse

Re: Tactica: 5th edition Necrons codex.

I have been waiting for the stalker models before I started finalizing my lists. This tactica has been very helpful so I just wanted to throw out a thank you to everyone.

One thing I am seeing for the stalkers is the potential as a screen as well as a tar pit.

Now I am not talking strict damage potential or anything like that but for board control I see it being pretty powerful. I have not seen the models in person yet but from the pictures I could see them shielding your troops on foot from assault but is still high enough that they can shoot under it. Sure they could melta the stalkers down but then they cant target another unit for assault. They cant assault under them so they would need to get around them to get to your troops. Unless they have something like lascannons they are going to have a hard time breaking with missiles or other spammed abilities that are usually in the strength 7 range. Combine it with their ability to twin link your troops(heck with the blast template you might be able to even hit two vehicles if you get lucky). I can see it being a good tactical addition. I was planning on running it before I saw how big it was in a similar role. Now it is just better at it.

Also in this role it has the potential to tie up most units for the entire game. Grenades need 6s to hit and a powerfist has two attacks, 1/6 to pen(cause a glance effectively does nothing in the tarpit scenario). Same thing for a horde. It is not just in the damage it does but in the damage it prevents.
Ahhh, the internet, where people lose all social inhibitions and somehow everyone gets compared to the losers in WWII

Re: Tactica: 5th edition Necrons codex.

Not stalker related, but just finished a 8 game toruney at 1500 points and came 4th in general manship.

    Generalmanship was:
    1. Draigowing
    2. GK Inquisitors
    3. GK
    4. necrons (me)
    5. necrons (he missed a game due to watching the rugby on the field).

There were 5 GK lists and 5 necron lists out of 26 players.
    Took a WW+orikan list+3 quake guns.
    Wins:
    GK
    SW
    Necron
    Marines
    Marine biker list

    Draw:
    IG

    Loss
GK Pure optimised netlist Draigo Wing...slow clap
    GK inquisitors

Am very happy with the WW combo so far. next tourney am taking an optimum firepower list for a 6 game 2000 pt tourney.

    i took:
    Orikan
Olord, 2+/3++, scythe, MSS, barge (MVP)

    1 desto cryp, solar pulse
    3 tranniecryps,

    Ctan, pyreshards, WW

    6 warriors, ark
    5 warriors
    5 warriors

    4 wraith, 2 whip, 1 pistol
    monolith

very flexible and took it to the enemy.

    cheers
