We are the necrontyr. We are legion. We claim dominion of this world... Surrender and die.
I'm thinking zahndrekh is good for sub 2k games, while imotekh might be better for over 2k, z's abilities ate better for smaller amounts of units while imhotekh's lightning gets better with more enemy units on the field. Anrakyr is pretty much always good.
So the FLGS is having a weird herohammer event, with a special character + one unit totalling up to 500 points played on half-tables (3'x4').
It's pretty clear most people are going to bring some form of melee deathstar, and it would be easy to take my Daemons (Fateweaver + 4 Bloodcrushers = derp) but I think it'd be more fun to do something with Necrons. It'd be a decent chance to try out the Counter-Deathstar (Court Lords with MSS/Scythe) but I feel like that would get rolled over in this context, because all it takes is a couple models passing their MSS and everyone will die.
Instead, I think I'd rather try to make a Shooting Deathstar with the Lance/Chrono Court. My first draft is this:
The only real problem I have is that if I'm presented with something that can DS next to me (like any Terminator Deathstar) I'm only going to get about two turns of Shooting.Originally Posted by 500 Herohammer
So instead, I think I might trade one of the Eldritch Lances (and a Warscythe and Sempiternal from one of the Lords) for a Veil of Darkness Cryptek, which should make the unit borderline unkillable. I've got a Res Orb, 2+/3++ on Zahndrekh to eat wounds, constant Stealth, and a Chrono re-roll to keep me alive against whatever pitiful shooting these deathstars can put out. That looks like this:
I mean...worst case scenario, Grey Knights DS right next to me with Storm Bolters and Psycannons, and all I've got to do is weather a single turn of that and then--barring horrible scatters--I'm untouchable for the rest of the game. It really seems like it would take another Shooting Deathstar to deal with it, of which only Tau can really do--in which case you just go offensive with the Veil, DS in their face, and let the Lords go to town on them with Furious Charge.Originally Posted by 500 Herohammer
Mostly, I'd hope I don't have to play Orks. Killing 2-3 models a turn out of a 30-blob would get boring fast.
Wife and I have been running this exact thing in team events and one on one games. We took it to the Wild West Shootout 2 team tourney last weekend and came in second, drawing against a very brutal SW/IG combo and utterly crushing an Ork/Daemon and IG/SM list. It works great with Trazyn (for scoring so people cannot ignore it) and one Solar Pulse to get it safely across the board, but JotWW and Weaken Resolve are huge problems. Against anyone without the ability to manipulate LD or snipe a res orb, it can walk through a hail of fire and still wreck just about anything in close combat.
Of course our list works differently than what most people are talking about here, but you can find both the list and my discussions on it earlier in this thread. To date, counting team games with the wife, the list is (with very little alterations to it) 29-3-1 with two losses to SW and one to vanilla marines in a wierd game. Of that sampling, I would say about half the games were against high quality generals. Only one game against GKs, using a hybrid build so not a good sample there either. Three trouncings of IG are in there, though, but thats down to wraiths more than anything else.
One quick question.... Has anyone tested the effectivenss vs survivability of Wraiths using wound allocation shennanigans vs going straight coils? I am interested in hearing about your experiences with them.

No vehicles allowed.
The hypothetical MSS counter-deathstar is more applicable to a real game scenario, where you can weaken it with other things prior to engaging it, and losing the fight isn't losing the game.
In this unit vs. unit game, you'd basically be getting your HQ + 5 models with no invul saves that then have to go and engage the meanest deathstars in the whole game, with no shooting whatsoever. Like, the most basic thing conceivable would probably be Vulkan and 7 TH/SS. So say you get your 5 MSS into base contact with them (assuming a perfect move, where 5 MSS end up in base with 5 different models) and say you make three of them attack themselves. The other five will still wipe your unit, easily.
I mean, I'm still taking MSS on my two Lords, just in case something weird happens--I just wouldn't attempt to do MSS Lords as an actual theme in this sort of event. Pretty much everything you could go up against would kill them even if they operate at peak efficiency.
I think that goes without saying.
10 Lychguards with a MSS/Scythe/Resorb lord and Trazyn is a good unit to just walk at your enemy. With that said though - for 600pts, I don't know whether this is a prudent investment at all. Only if Lychguards were cheaper or has other utility (Pariah, here's looking at you, kid)....
I've tried Zahndrekh + Oby + Chrono + Lychguard to good effect, but it lacks the protection and anti-deathstar capability of the MSS.

@DJ3 You will OBVIOUSLY have to face at least one seer coucil on motojet, and i don't think veiling around is here the best idea. It would go like eight warlocks on motojet, few powers on them , just the necesary, with a farseer with fortune and mental war. I know that you cannot counter everything with one unit but just make sure you have an overall tactic to counter as best as you possibly can this unit.
(and,by the way,Eldar OP !!!! XD )
@DJ3, You said vehicles are not allowed. I would recommend dropping that Chronometron and stick with just plain HoD's. Chronometron is super effective versus armor, but you won't be facing any. Good luck with it, sounds like some fun!
Lol... For giggles in that tournament, Old One Eye and a Brood of dakka fexes would be fun. At least until you ran against Draigo and some paladins.

I'd really rather have Obyron, all things considered, but he doesn't unlock a Court.
The Chronometron is always more valuable than a Lance, unless your Lances roll perfectly. The more Lances you have, the more unlikely that is, making the Chrono pretty much always better.
If a single Lance misses against Infantry, your Chronometron instantly equals a Lance by granting you the re-roll. If all Lances hit and one fails to wound, it's a Lance++ that gets to roll to wound without needing to roll to hit.
For five more points, it's going to essentially be a Lance, while also giving me a re-roll on a save once per phase.
It's technically an overall ban on vehicles, not specific to the characters. I think the intent was to avoid Transport vehicles as well as something like "Marbo + three Leman Russes!"
What about Obyron + 3 spyders with particle beamer and a gloom prism? Like Obyron, Spyder w/ beamer and prism, Spyder w/ beamer and prism and fabricator array, spyder w/ beamer
You'll be short on the 500 pts, but 3 MCs, teleporting, shooting attacks, and psychic defense sounds like a solid plan. You could even use Orikan instead of Obyron to be funny.
Another funny thing is to use a court with 2 tremor staves to make the enemy walk towards you sloooooooowly and shoot them with 3 lances the entire way. Take Zahndrekh too.
I'd thought about Obyron and the Spyders, but they kinda exist in a middle-ground where they aren't good enough at Assault to actually threaten any of the stuff I'd expect to show up--and if they can't do that, not much sense to bother. They'd have to just teleport around and fire Particle Beamers the whole game. And needing 24" on their shooting rather than 36" makes them incredibly vulnerable to Assault from a lot of things.
Plus, I don't have any Spyder models at the moment.
Hi, just starting necrons back up, but cant make a decent point list. Right now im wanting to field a foot sloging list, and the first thing im stuck on is, immortals or warriors for on foot? Right now im looking for 1850 pts. My opponents are typically spacemarines(usually GK or BA) or nids.
soon, when you walk into GW you won't ask what race you're playing against, only what chapter...
It's possible to win with Necrons, as with any other army. It just is an uphill climb through thorn bushes, rabid cats and listening to your little cousin explain why Twilight is such an amaaaaaazing boooook.
