Spikyjames does Marines (just a few!)

Hi James,
Awesome work as ever, the Fire Hawks are (in my opinion) one of the more characterful Chapters from the Badab War books and this looks like a great intepretation of their colour scheme. I hesitate to ask (because you must get these requests all the time) but is there any chance of a tutorial on the colours used? I'm still using your original receipe for my Ultramarines, and damn fine it is too.

One other question, is that a freehand Chapter badge? If so how easy / difficult did you find doing it?

On the base issue, i actually think the one used is fine but difficult to make a firm recommendation based on one model.

I'm hopefully going to be able to develope the knightly character in them as the army progresses, really looking forward to it.

The red is done this way;

Mechrite Red base
Orkhide shade, watered down
Blood Red
Solar Mecharius Orange first highlight
Lyanden Darksun final highlight
Baal Red wash

Yellow;

1/1 Lyanden Darksun/Sunburst Yellow base
1st highlight Sunburst Yellow
final highlight 1/1 Sunburst Yellow/Skull White

All old paints so I'll have to replace them at some point.

The chapter Symbol is pretty difficult at the minute, I've only done it twice so far, hopefully I'll get better at it soon

On another note I'm considering selling my Space Wolves, some of which have featured in this log, if anybody's interested just shoot me a pm or they may end up on EBay.

Can't wait to see more of the Fire Hawks! The Detail is outstanding, especially the little flames all over the mini. How many of them are going to paint?

It'll be a full army of them, so at least 1500 points worth, I've got 2 full tactical squads, a command squad(including commander), some close combat terminators, assault marines, a couple of rhinos, a razorback, a land raider redeemer, some sternguard and at least one of the new storm talons planned, there will more than likely be a bit of Badab influence in the shape of the SC mentioned in the book and some units to go with him.

So yeah quite a few, I've not done a standard marine army for a while and am really looking forward to getting stuck into it.

For the bases, I'd probably advise a darker/duller scheme rather than lighter browns. A darker brown (P3 Battlefield Brown is excellent as a base color, not sure the current Citadel equivalent tho) with greyish hilights would work nicely in my mind. For grass, the new Citadel tufts (or their equivalent from cheaper companies) would likely work.

In the end, the bases won't matter half as much as the quality of the paintjob. Yours look great. Will be cool to see whether your Firehawks or Rev's Deathwatch style GK's look nicer in the end

Thanks buddy, I may well pick up some of the GW tufts as the ones I have aren't the best.

I've finished the 2nd of the marines, I've decided to change the eye colour as I think blue works a bit better, still got a way to go with these until I'm 100% happy with them though.

I see you are doing that thing where you replace the mags of the bolters again...very nice...it does give them a bit more brutal look

Thanks mate, yeah, I was quite surprised at how many of the storm bolters I still have lying around for the mags. Hopefully I'll be finished number 3 tonight.

Fire Hawks marines look great. I've always liked seeing chapters that don't get much exposure. You should paint up a small force of these guys

Hi, nice work on those marines. I love the scheme and especially the grim look of der sergeants face. Personally I would do them with greyish bases, but those are fine
