Sons of the Mountain (Ogre Kingdoms)

Hey guys, recently started painting up an Ogre Kingdoms army for the Tale of Fantasy Painters, and I thought I may as well start a log of my own as well to document my progress. Everythings assembled and mostly based, so I have a nice shelf in my display cabinet full of little grey men staring at me reproachfully. I'll be posting more detailed shots of the completed models, and WIP's, as I progress, but I thought I'd use this first post to put in placeholders so you guys can see what's going to be in the army, and hopefully as the months go by they'll one by one be replaced by fully painted minis!

@Morten C - Thanks very much. May take a while to get to the mournfangs, partly because i want to get the bulk of the infantry done first with perhaps a character in between for good behaviour, and secondly I’d quite like to do them in a snow leopard scheme, which I'm slightly afraid to tackle atm.

    @colonel kame trine -

    Astronomican Grey base

heavy Assurman Blue wash all over

Heavily drybrush Astronmican grey back over it

More lightly drybrush a 75/25 Astronican grey / skull white mix over it, leaving any areas of heavy shade

Apply another wash of Assurman blue all over

Reapply the 75/25 grey & white mix again, leaving even more in the shade

Very lightly drybrush a 50/50 mix of the grey and white over areas which will catch the light.

Apply a 25/75 mix of grey and white to the ends of the long strands of hair in the mane and across the shoulders

Apply a very dilute glaze with Assurman blue to blend in the stages a bit more where needed

Apply pure skull white to the very tips of the strands on the mane and back

That's roughly how i did it, although you should however be told that I did initially airbrush the yhettes vallejo model air pale blue, but i pissed about with the fur so much that once i settled on the final scheme I'm sure that initial layer has been pretty much drybrushed and washed out of existence on the final models. You should be able to forgo that step and get [nearly] the same effect.

Sorry, didn't see your post. Thanks very much, Dark. Given how awesome your own ogres are that's really flattering.

Not much of an update, but I've been working on a unit of 6 bulls and thought I may as well post a progress picture. Hopefully I'll be able to finish them within a week or so.

Absolutely beautiful work - feeling very jealous here! I really like that AOW Tyrant, though I'm toying with the idea of the Scibor one myself, both are great minatures and you've done a cracking job with yours. Great job - keep it up - I'll definitely be following your plog!

Thanks. I really like the AOW tyrant, apart from the skirt, but i wasn't to keen on the scibor one when i looked at it. The feet look weird. Having said that, I had my misgivings about the scibor butcher as well, but i really don't like the GW ones so i took a gamble. Really glad i did as it looks great in the flesh. Maybe the tyrant will be the same? Hopefully you will get one so i can wait to see it painted before making a decision, as the pose would make a great BSB!

Anyway, some more progress has been made on the bulls. I’m on the home straight now. The wood and leather both need a final highlight and some touching up, but once that’s done off all that’s really left is the skin and hair and then random bits like the skulls and lookout gnoblar.

Well, took a fair bit longer to finish then I’d thought, but that was mainly down to me alternatively blowing stuff up in Battlefield 3 and setting fire to stuff in Skyrim. Anyway, finished just in time for this months Tale, so all’s well that ends well. Hope you like.

Your army is looking great, the basing technique works wonders for the army, and your stonefish looks so cool! The butcher model is crazy, just how I'd expect one to look! And your freehand on that banner is perfect!

Thanks a lot. Yeah, I’m really pleased by the basing, first time I’ve ever done anything more adventurous than sand and static grass. By stonefish do you mean stonehorn? I was worried I’d made his base too big, but he needed the lift to keep his silhouette proportionate to the rest of the army. Think he’ll look pretty terrifying once he’s painted up. I’m glad you like the banner, though it hasn’t come out brilliantly in the pictures. The next sunny day (which may take a while) I’ll try and get some better photos of all these guys as no matter how many lights I shine on them my photos are still coming out quite dark.

Finally, funny you should mention the butcher as he fell into a pot of paint this evening and here’s the result so far:

Fantastic stuff still, Laborious. The banner looks good, but the photo does seem to wash out the contratst between the colors. I can't wait to see a better photo.

What type of snow flock are you using?

Thanks guys. No great secret, I just use micro balloons instead of flock. It's much, much finer. Once painted I mix the microballoons it up with some pva and water and use that as a base layer, then once that's dry I randomly spot on watered down pva and sprinkle on and shake like you would with flock until I’m happy with the result. Finally, once I've varnished the models and that's dried I give the base and feet area another light coat of varnish and quickly dip a dry brush into the microballoons and then touch that lightly to the soles of the feet, boots and vertical surfaces on the rocks etc.

I picked up a big bottle of the stuff on ebay for about £8. Like i say it is very, very fine so be careful you don't breath it in.
