Thread: Sons of the Mountain (Ogre Kingdoms)

Re: Sons of the Mountain (Ogre Kingdoms)

Finished the butcher, but I’m not happy with the blood and am debating redoing it, hence why there’s none spattered over the skin. I didn’t want to go overboard with it, but I messed up the initial spatters and fixing them meant enlarging what was already there, which still didn’t look right and so on . . . I’ll leave it be for a while and either redo it or add some gore to the rest of him. What do you guys think?

I’ve also made some good progress on the lead belchers, so hopefully I’ll finish them before Christmas.

Still looking good laborius! I always get a chuckle from that butcher, he looks so sad and gross.

Here is a link to my favorite blood technique!

Here's a unit of 5 Sabretusks, using the new Fenrisian Wolf models.

Yes, another example of the fenrisain wolves on cavalry bases !! They seem to rank up quite easily.
Your work on them is brilliant, that brown-yellow scheme fits them quite nicely. Keep it up !

    Thanks guys.

I had a bit of a pleasant surprise this morning. I'd ordered one of these with the intention of using it as a champion for my mournfang unit, but despite coming on the same size base as them it's, well, see for yourselves. . .

As you can see it's pretty much an exact match in height and length for the Stonehorn, save for being thinner at the shoulders. So I'm faced with something of a dilema. It ranks up perfectly well with the mournfangs (though it's head does jut out most impressively) so do I mount it on it's standard base and use it as I'd intended, or stick it on a larger base and use it as a thundertusk/stonehorn stand-in? Or make it two detachable bases and have the best of both worlds?

I love your army, especially the painting on the tyrant.
    As for the "mournfang" model-
I think it looks alright for a unit champion.
In addition, didnt the older background say that ogres used a whole range of mountain monsters for riding?
As long as you paint him up the same way it will look great.
On the other hand I am not so sure about using him as a thundertusk stand-in...but have to see him on a base for that.

    Cheers! Glad you like him.

Luckily the stonehorn is currently pinned but not glued, so I removed him to see what the scibor model looked like on it. What do you think?

Like I say, they're pretty similar in proportion apart from the fact the Stonehorn is broader at the shoulders and he has those massive horns.

Looking at this- yes, definitely big enough (or even bigger!) as a stonehorn stand in!
    That thing is massive.
I also have to admit that this model looks more realistic than the mournfangs-
the huge fat ogres in the mournfangs just look as if they will squish them under their weight.
Are you planning on adding some banners and extras to it? I think then it would really look great.
Go for it in using it for both (unit champion and stonehorn).

I've got loads of bit left over from the stonehorn and ironblaster kits, so I’ll certainly bedeck him with gnoblars and random bits of junk.

I'd go for the bigger base. It will certainly do him justice.

Yeah, that's the way i've decided to go. Anyone know of any bitz stores that are selling the giant monster bases? Everywhere i've looked have stonehorn (or whatever) tusks and riders and crossbows etc. but no bases? What the hell do they do with all the bases? Paint spots on them and have giant games of dominos?

    Thank you too btw.

Anyway, a few new pictures for you. Here’s where the iron guts are atm. Nothing terribly exciting. The metal is mostly done, though looking at this I think I’ll go over the iron with the lighter shade of rust again in a few places. The trousers have been base coated and washed and I’ll start highlighting them up tomorrow.

I also finally got around to taking some army shots.

    Hope you like.

Well gosh, that’s really very kind of you to say so. Try and be inspired to paint faster than me though, or you'll never get them all done. Spent this afternoon base coating the skin on the ogres, and when I finished and looked up at the clock 4 and a half hours had gone by. I really am baffled how everyone else seems to be able to paint so much more quickly than me. Better or worse, that's understandable, but surely there can't be all that much difference in how quickly two different people actually apply paint? Anyway, I digress. Here's where the unit is at now.

Metals done. Trousers are done. Boots are done. Stone is done. A lot of the leather has been done, save where it's on the skin like armour strapping etc. Left to do is the skin (which has been basecoated with tallarn flesh and washed with ogryn flesh atm) then any items of bone, leather and cloth and finally the non-metal areas of the shields on their shoulders. I probably should be able to finish them within a week or so, but I've given up trying to estimate how long stuff will take me. Still, it was the tortoise that completed his project log, not the hare.

dude... don't leave those snow bases out in the sun too long!

I like the scibor mini more as a stonehorn/thundertusk than the mournfang... it'd be fine if you had the 5 of them, but he's just too different imo... don't get me wrong though.. different is good.. I think that he's just a tad too big to really fit in.. love the model though!

I know! I looked in my display cabinet this morning and my yhettes are gone! Just 3 little bases and some tufts of fur. Yeah, I'm definitely going to use the scibor rhinox thingy as a thundertusk stand in. It does rank up with the mournfangs, but it's far too big and badass to be consigned to being part of a unit. I'm actually really glad I got it now. It was an impulse buy on maelstroms sale last month, and after I’d ordered it i did have second thoughts as I thought it was rather expensive for what it was, even with the discount. But given it's actual size I think it's quite a good deal at the same RRP as the GW kit. Just a bit surprising that scibor sell it with a monstrous cavalry-sized base and not something bigger.
