Snow (will give a nice contrast to the browns on the mini)
Desert (Tomb Kings in space?)
Urban (will tie with my existing Space Marine army)
Lava
Nice start so far. Lovely rust effect and lava bases. I think the overall effect is a little bit spoiled by green rods. They look odd on those rusted bodies. Personally I think painted rods look much better. Keep it up![]()
thank you! I am kind of lost with the gold actually. Perhaps I should refrain from using it on the normal guys and just keep it for the elites?
Thank you for the vote
Well to be honest I never thought about how living metal can rust. I just liked the effect so I did it. If I had to explain perhaps I would say that something went wrong on the programming of the scarabs and these necrons accumulated rust.
I appreciate the kind comments! I agree with you about painting those rods but I couldnt motivate myself enough :P
well to be honest I have no idea how to do it... any idea?

and now for the tutorial :
first I undercoat everything chaos black (spray)
followed by a dark flesh drybrush
and when that dries a drybrush of vermin brown
next is a drybrush of boltgun metal
Now the fun part. Mix dark flesh with chaos black (3:1) and start stippling your model in random spots. For stippling I use an old citadel drybrush
once you do this your model should look like this

next take some vermin brown and start stippling again
then, take some chainmail and apply a few highlights on the edges of your model
finally wash the recesses of the model using devlan mud
I guess the trick lies in being careful when you are stippling. Too much paint on your brush and the effect will fail.
I hope this helps! If you have any questions please ask!
Now let me get back to my monolith....
Should I go for a turquoise/bronze combination or should I go for a more traditional dark green?
Alternatively I could go for a rust scheme but I dont feel like making the monolith appear rusty and old...
any ideas?

Black with extreme colour highlight to match your Gauss weapons. I love them with crop circles painted on them too to break up the large surfaces.
Interesting blog. Have you considered using the sponge from the back of a blister pack to apply the weathering? Maybe a macharius orange wash too? Just brain storming, feel free to ignore.

They're really nice.
Could you explain the stippling processs to non natives like me.
I think a better explanation might be 'coz it looks cool!'
Personally, I'm gonna paint up some verdigris bronze necrons. I doubt 'living metal' oxidises like bronze, but who cares - rule of cool
From the product description for the GW stippling brush "stippling is a method of painting where you load the brush with paint and then apply it to the model in gentle 'stabbing' motions. This creates a light, dusty, effect on the figure perfect for rust and weathering."
That sums it up, really.
Actually I tried the turquoise theme but it was an EPIC fail... I will upload some pics later...
I will probably opt for this colour scheme. First I have to decide if I will strip or repaint the Monolith
I actually thought about that but I have never done this before and I am not that keen on using the sponge method on small surfaces. Perhaps this would work better on smaller surfaces..
Merci
I think Baphomael explained everything already
Thx for explaining stippling for me
verdigris bronze FTW! Looking forward to seeing some of your models! I am actually considering to do the same for my elite Necrons ... still have to decide...
and now for a small update.
My first cryptek wraith. After having read the rules for wraiths in the new book I realised that having two was a big mistake... I really need to get my hands on as many as possible!
anyway here is the first one:

I like the lava bases, especially with the rusted look of the Crons.

Your necrons really got that ancient feel on them and the lava goes well with it,keep it up![]()
thank you!
here is a small group shot of everything I have painted so far
I still have 3 Destroyers and 1 Heavy Destroyer plus 7 scarab bases, 1 wraith , 8 more warriors and two monoliths before I move on to the new fun things![]()

Basing work particularly highlights the metals ...
It's really a neat army ...

Lovely minis and great tutorial.
Canoptec wraiths are really worth their points. In my last battle it took my archon and incubi (6) three hth phases to cut down a unit of 5 wraiths. Very unpleasant unit.
Also every time I see in the background those old HE spearmen, a tear falls down my cheek. Those were good old times![]()
@Pazuzu: merci beaucoup!
@Morthai: yes, the canoptek wraiths are too good to be true.. Problem is that they are not available to buy anymore... Perhaps GW is going to release new models as a 2nd wave?
and now for a small update: scarabs!
I hope you like them!
