Tale of Terrain Builders month 9 (and November's WIP)

The Tale of Terrain Builders 2011 – 2012 Month 9

This is the thread to post your work finished in October. After a week it becomes where you post your WIP for November. Hold off commenting about others work until then, as we want a bunch of shiny pictures , but we also want many comments later on. There is no dice roll mechanic for commenting, you should comment on each entry and share your thoughts.

    What is it all about?

The aim of The Tale of Terrain Builders is to help motivate those involved to start and complete enough scenery to fill a gaming board in the next twelve months.
Because not everyone can spare the same amount of time for various reasons, there are different levels of commitment. The standard, or Mens, level of commitment is to create a single, reasonably sized piece of terrain per month*. The lesser level of commitment is for the Boys category, and requires the completion of a piece of terrain every other month, but with the commitment to show progress each month!

The builders do this each month for the next 12 months, starting with their first post on the first day of March 2011, and finishing with their last post on the first day of February 2012. So we have this month, whilst everyone signs up, to gather scrap, parts, tools and otherwise get yourself ready to go with the first work in progress starting in February.

    * A single piece of scenery at least the size of a hill of building will be considered one piece. A barricade, tree, rock spire or similar would be considered too small on its own to count as a whole piece of scenery, however multiple such pieces would count as a single entry. If in doubt, terrain that covers a diameter of roughly 6” is what we are going for, but this is a loose definition. We certainly aren’t going to chide anyone because they only built an outhouse and a tree! After all, getting stuff done is the name of the game! Obviously, larger projects can be broken up over multiple days.*

A note on building whole Tables and Dioramas: Both building the actual playing surface for playing games on and Dioramas count for this tale. Dioramas can use the Boys level of commitment (unless they are truly large), and will count each month as long as appreciable progress is made each month. Tables, on the other hand, can range from a simple coating of flock to very elaborate set-ups. For these, if your planned table is pretty simple, use the boys category. If it is complex, use the mens. In either case, entries are judged on whether decent progress is made. Again, none of us are too anal about this. Just build and have fun and everything should be OK!

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with 1 piece of completed, usable scenery. That is 1 piece for 10 of the next 12 months.

At the beginning of each month a new thread will appear for the builders to post your previous month’s construction efforts and the rest of the builders to offer words of encouragement.

In twelve months we will all end up with enough Terrain to cover a table, which is awesome! (Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end will... it's harder than you think!)

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q : Am I too Late? Can I still join in?
A : No you are not too late. Yes you can still join in. Just post on this thread saying you want to join, but it will be very hard from now on.

Q : Can I build more than one piece per month?
A : Yes, you can build as much as you like. However, please only post one of your pieces in the monthly thread to keep pace with everyone. Save one for the next month... take one off even. Of note though, is the * point above stating small scenery items count as 1/3rd of a whole piece. We would expect 3 of these as a single entry.

Q : What happens if I build a GIANT piece (like a huge defence laser)?
A : If you create a truly epic piece of scenery, then you're welcome to post it as s single months entry. However, you could (based on how many 'buildings/hills' in size you consider/count it as 2 or more month’s entries and post it at the end of that time.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Re: Tale of Terrain Builders month 9 (and November's WIP)

    And here are the participants:

WIP is for work in progress.
bigWip is for work in progress that counts as a full months work (Mens) or two for Boys
done is for finished pieces. This counts for two months work for Boys
done (+1) counts for two full months for Mens (4! for Boys)
Joker is a joker and J's are for default (not requested) jokers.

Please check for any mistakes I made.

Happy terrain building and go, go, go. There are just four entries left so 75% should be done by now (since this is number 9).

Re: Tale of Terrain Builders month 9 (and November's WIP)

    Little Joe: Mens

    THIS MONTH:
Goblin Mountain part one or the whole thing as a big WIP as it still needs a few tweaks. This piece will be for the pass scenario with a dwarven counterpart planned or even a vampire mountain retreat, it also can give the deployment zone some interesting new options by effectively blocking one side of it.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Finishing in time of course, but more importantly I really like the mountain. I did a few impassable terrain pieces before in the old days and they where a lot smaller and didn’t look right. Now with the new WYSIWYG for terrain in Warhammer a tree is a tree and a mountain can be a mountain. This of course is just a very small part of said mountain but still it is pretty large.
As you can see in the picture where I used a few of my old trees, the new ones are of another size. I also like the snow effect but will add a few more layers when the other part is done to make it look even an a bit thicker on the top. But I do not want too much snow as I want to go for a "retreating snow the goblins are good to go" kind of feel.

Lows: Well not finishing the whole thing yet of course, but that will be for next month so no real low this month.

    NEXT MONTH:
This mountain needs a second part, and the tunnel at the back will be populated with “the chase”.
And some adding of grasses to the pieces already done…
And thinking of what to do next for a watchtower and some barricades…
And two goblin themed forests would be nice while at it…

    Heya all

Admittedly this has become a bit of a struggle to keep up with. I've been caught up with loads of stuff outside this and only recently decided to paint up some barricades! I don't plan on bailing but its unlikely I'll tackle any big projects any time soon.

I should have these finished soon, but proof that I have done something!

I'm doing a bucketload of terrain for both fantasy and sci-fi and I think I will be able to finish 12 in the remaining time.

Here are 3 forests for my winter-themed board:

Comment time! Hope there will be some late posters!

@ Xasil: Nice stone circle, would have liked the standing stones with less angles, but that is only my taste.

@ Narcissus: Great work! Love the weathering and the posters.

@ Little Joe: looks great, will be interesting to see what will come next.

@ Thoume: If the day only has 24 hours, why don`t you take the night for painting???

@ juicytomatoes: love that winter theme! Well done!

Re: Tale of Terrain Builders month 9 (and November's WIP)

    Comment time!

@N810: That is because you build like a man and signed up for boys, nothing wrong with that. I think we will see some other participants finish in the next month or even this one: Xazil has finished as well.

@DAGabriel: Great sense of humour and a nice canoe (homemade?), nice paint job under the water effect. So I read you are the new dessert master.
I like the house you are painting a lot any chance of a scale picture with a model for my planning and the footprint if it is not to much trouble.

@Xazil: Nice and congratulations on being the first men do the job. It looks good though where are the bloody symbols and the dried blood.

@Narcissus: a great show of skill in that terrain piece, I think I already put it in the table for last month (will check on that). Make a few more like that and we will call you a very manly boy.

@Thoume: I think with the WIP walls and so on I can give it a bigWIP (three is a month’s deal so six might be called for in two and so on). Why not fry us some more of those steaks?

@MOMUS: finished month 8th can be posted here as well now so we can all see and comment. I just checked and the castle is progressing very well. I will add it to last month in my table.

@juicytomatoes: You got me puzzled for a while until I started reading. We welcome all, but meeting boys for this year is hard (not impossible). But anybody is welcome to join and try. Going for mens is insane but be my guest, I’ll handle the backlog in the table.
A great start there, is that paint or snow effect on the board? I cannot seem to get mine white, but love the shine through effect too much.

Re: Tale of Terrain Builders month 9 (and November's WIP)

@DAGabriel: I love the skellie and the water is superb but my eye is drawn to that canoe, how did you make it? Also are those fish tank plants?

@Xazil: Nice work! How about some magic symbols on the larger stones?

@Narcissus: Wow lots of emotion in this piece, what did you use to make the goop?

@Little joe: Showing us all how its done! I really like the 'balcony', and cant wait for your goblin themed forests.

@Thoume: I know how you feel, barricades look promising. Come on you lazy ork!

@juicytomatoes: Good stuff, cool winter feel. They look really bleak, like you would find a poor guardsman frozen to death somewhere on them I like!

And here is my own humble offering. Last month i finished the third wall, im currently painting the towers (which now have doors) hopefully going to get some home made 'jungle flock' next week and cover parts of the castle with it.

@ Momus: even if it is in German the pics should show enough, made a step by step here: http://www.gw-fanworld.net/showpost....65&postcount=6
Regarding the plants, original GW, started that terrain years ago in Nottingham.

    Comments time!

DAGabriel: Very nice! Poor ole lonely skeleton... what's he fishing for?
Xazil: I love how you did the circle. A simple yet effective method to give the feel of the thing.
Narcissus: The waste water reservoir is inspirational! I'll be stealing a little of the idea, if you don't mind.
Little Joe: You are completely right about the WYSIWYG thing about the hills! I plain forgot about it having an effect and it's true that something needs to be done for my hills now. I think part of it is that I've hardly rolled any hills in my games so far...
Thoume: Looking forward to seeing those finished!\
MOMUS: How did you get those walls and cuts so straight? Nice work!

    Replies:
Little Joe: Ah... but that's because I have a little 'cheat'. I think you will understand when you see what I'm doing. It's a simple project for something my buddy thought up to enhance our 40k games. It does need some dedication to finish up the project, so I thought I'd join the tale to do it.

MOMUS: Thanks! Yep, it's always the poor guardsman

    Comments

DAGabriel: Very nice water effects and shading for depths. Along with the fisherman who wont leave his favourite spot.

Narcissus: Superb use of the every day office items to make a great peice of terrain with lots of little details.

Little Joe: I like the mountain and how it sections off. The barracaded landing and cave screams for a scenerio (with dwarven artillery? ).

Thoume: Nice start on the barracades.

juicytomatos: Great winter forest stands, love the snow effect on the ground.

MOMUS: The fort slowly coming together, looks like a great base. Looking forward to seeing the jungle effect writhing over it.

    Reply to all:
Thanks for the comments, I held off on runes/blood because I wanted to keep the terrain simple in this case. Also its flexible for use in warmachine/warhammer or 40k. I almost didn't add the alter for example.

@Little Joe: One of my early months was three small items (as is suggeseted as an alternative) was awarded a month+1 by SamVimes. I don't feel like it was a fair extra and will submit another peice of terrain to finish off the mens tale if that is ok with you.

Re: Tale of Terrain Builders month 9 (and November's WIP)

Finishing does not exclude you from showing finished pieces; you are more than welcome to show us more wonderful terrain. Since you are done could you and N810 PM me with your thoughts on this tale. I want to use the last month and maybe one month to align to half time in the other tales but would like some feedback. I do not want to go and tell people how this tale should be so all participants and interested Warseers can have a discussion in those last month(s) about how this tale can improve.

    Some replies:
@MOMUS: Thanks, they will probably be (bright and colourful) fungus heavy forests. But as always my output is in constant flux, I go with the flow of my creative juices so no promises.

@juicytomatoes: I prefer not to roll but have one player set up a nice scene and the other one adds one or two pieces of his choice and then chooses where he wants to start.
Cheating is not allowed now as for bending the rules…

@Xazil: Well come to think about it I am able to use it in a Mordheim game as well... I'd just have to make some Goblin shacks as well, I might do something like Thoume did with his orc buildings, just with a chariot work shop, wolf pit, spider hive (think Arachnarok belly meets termite hill here), fungus farms,… ah damned now you did it, I especially want that hive.
