I'd love to paint a hive Tyrant, I was completely intiidated by the model though: went for these guys instead (apologies for the many forthcoming posts, stupid picture limit...


It turns out the TWC are very nice to paint (wolves at least, working on the riders), here's some step by step pics or how I went about them; I'll edit in the text when I've got a bit of time tonight or tomorrow.

Lovely wolves you got there, the life-like pattern of their fur looks great.

Thanks mate, they are perfect for playing around with the airbrush, but ore importantly the fur takes washes and drybrushing even better! I must say the guys on top aren't quite as fun to paint, but I just love monsters

Superb work Byron. These look grear and the blood effect is a great touch. Any chance you can explain how you get your snow effect so good?

I bought and magnetised the hive tyrant at the weekend. I've magnetised it so you can use every single option. However i'd suggest no one magnetises it unless they are absolutely mental as I was swearing at that model for hours and hours. I think you definitely made the right choice with these.

Sure bud:

To make snow you will need:
Baking Soda
Pva (white glue/elmers for our US readers)
Water Effects (Optional, makes it dry faster, promotes 'clumping'
A container
A stick
A clean brush
Models!

Step #1: Baking Soda!



Step #2: Pva (mix it in before next step)


Step #3: Water Effects **Optional, see above I tend to use without**


Looks like:


Step #4: Put it on your bases


Don't forget where snow would collect!:


Step #6: If you're using 'tufts' brush a little pva/your snow mix on top, then scatter on some soda to make them look frosted:


Example:




Mix it with PVA, slowly adding more soda until it's really thick (unless you want melt snow, see below). That's it, slop it on your bases, google snow drifts if you want realistic examples, and don't forget those footprints! (Blood + snow = good also)

Fluffy 'Fresh' Snow
Do the above, but after putting your 'snow mix' on the base and waiting 10 mins carefully sprinkl some bi carb on (I drop it from the back of a flat sculpting tool) and blow off the excess.

Brighter than Bright snow - Often combined with fluffy fresh snow.
Either:
Paint white underneath where your snow is going (I use vallejo foundation white because it only needs a couple of coats)
Mix a little white paint with your snow mix, you won't need much.

Meltsnow
Just add more PVA, if your pva is thick add a little water (before or after the bi-carb, not as the same time)

N.B When doing anything to do with snow clean your brushes before! If there's even a trace of red in it for example your scary ogres are now going to look like fat fairies on candy mountain...

No worries bud They were painted to sell; I don't even play 40k! However the ebay market didn't seem to like them as much as the forums so the second lot is still up there for a bargain

Really nice Annihilation Barge! Can you explain me how you did the metallic parts on them, I looking to do something like that with other main color on mine but I'm struggling on the metallic parts.

Hi bud, I've had a quick look at the guys on your blog, they're really neat and crisp, I'd just say there were lacking a little in depth so far, the easiest way to achieve this is with washes without a doubt.

So for both metallics, silver or bronze I followed the same pattern:

Base: achieved with a couple of thin coats, maybe three, this is by far the most important stage, take your tie, get it right (smooth!)

Drybrush highlight, lighter colour, not very much on the brush, this takes a while but it's worth it.

Wash: straight from the pot, (black for silver, sepia for gold) with a 10:1 ratio of wash:vallejo glaze medium, which keeps it smooth
