Thread: The PCRC presents: Rehab of 8 Addicts

Re: The PCRC presents: Rehab of 8 Addicts

    here we go.
tried to combine both suggestions to have a wraithbone rifle getting sick and dying where the evil glowing hexes are burned into it. and sticking with the fluff, the bullets are supposed to look like glass vials.

what do you think, did it work?

    > Shale
    >> Imperial Reclamation Fleet: Initial Orbital Augury
    >> Evidence of Tyranno-forming: Nil
    >> Contact with Imperial Governor: Nil
    >> Contact with Adeptus Arbites: Nil
    >>> Hololith view selected
    >>> Points of note from Imperial records have been appended

    1. The last known location of ‘Platform 02’, the second mobile giga-rig designed to harvest precious metals as it crawls through the shifting mineral seas of Shale. Contact was lost several years before the Tyranid system invasion. The cause of its disappearance – and of its predecessor ‘Platform 01’ – remains unknown. A number of theories have been put forward, including Demiurg raids, fatal dust-static build up and attack by an as yet unclassified massive indigenous dust serpent. There is no conclusive evidence for any of these theories.

It is worth noting that both giga-rigs are likely to hold significant mineral and technological wealth if they can be located.

    2. The xenos artefacts known locally as ‘The Fingerbones’ are near-identical to numerous other examples found along the Eastern Fringe, and as they appear to be in a dormant state have never warranted any special investigation. The best account we have is an extract from noted scribe Howtopher Buxcraft’s encyclopaedic travelogue, The Long Way Round, or, My Travels Along the Eastern Fringe.

“As our sand-train crested the dune I got my first view of the so-called Fingerbones. Even at this distance it was obvious how they got their name – or so I thought. Silhouetted against the pale sky, the henge of Xenos artefacts looked for all the world like a giant skeletal hand clawing up through the dirt.
It was only when our path bought us closer did I learn the real reason for their name. As the desert wind whipped dust and scree against the structures they made a hollow knocking sound, like the rattle of dried bones. That chilling noise followed us across the desert for a number of hours as we continued our journey to the west…”

    3. Site of suspected Demiurg hostile contact. Prospector Team 4235 declared missing in 989.M41. A partial vid-capture of stout, diminutive warriors was the only evidence of Demiurg involvement.

    4. The entrance to the southern polar catacombs, a short distance from the planet’s current magnetic south pole. The catacombs are believe to be naturally occurring and extensive, but are largely unsurveyed. Orbital augury shows null results.

    5. The location of the infamous dust serpent “sighting”. Although the original holo-pic was exposed as a hoax intended to devalue the area’s prospecting rights in 749.M39, a small tourist industry has sprung up in recent years. Many wealthy Imperial citizens from surrounding systems travelled to Shale in the hope of being the one to finally hunt down and kill the legendary beast. So far none have met with any success.

    6. The planet’s capital city, First Dig, is found in the northern hemisphere. Built around the original mining settlement, First Dig has grown from shanty town to sprawling city over the course of several millennia. First Dig exists as several levels both above ground in the desert sun and below ground in the old mine workings. Due to ample space it has spread outwards rather than upwards over the years, unlike many other Imperial settlements.
Although self sustaining algae vats can provide the city with enough nutrient paste to indefinitely feed its population, First Dig is dependent on off-world supplies to supplement all but the most rudimentary living conditions. Wide spread civil unrest is suspected following the system annexation by the Tyranids. It should be noted that the Imperial Governor’s control over the lower levels of First Dig has often been nominal at best.

+++Neca eos omnes! Imperator suos agnoscet+++

+++Kill them all! The Emperor will know his own+++

Unfortunately for those inhabitants of Shale with nothing else than absolute faith for His Divine Imperial Majesty, a prospecting team has unearthed a foul artifact of Chaos, the very mirror of that which nearly transmuted the desert world of Tallarn into a unspeakable daemon world of Chaos.

Procogniscators of the Grey Knights have foreseen this deadly peril to the Imperium of Man and the Grand Masters have seen fit to dispatch a force of rare size and mettle.

As the air hums and crackles with the unearthly voices of the damned, one once denied the waking universe, returns to lead his brethren. He will be sorely needed as the machinations of Chaos have filled the planet with a tide of genetic refuse and xenos filth, all of whom must be purged with flame and the sword before the artifact can be rendered quiescent once more...

Re: The PCRC presents: Rehab of 8 Addicts

I'm very fussy about the poses of the models in my armies, so buying second-hand normally isn't ideal unless they're metal. However, I've been collecting Elysian models second-hand for a while now, from Warseer and ebay, and I've struck lucky price-wise on a few great deals, which rather make up for it!

It's a bit of a faff reposing assembled models, but by-and-large people building Elysians know what they're doing, so the ones you get second-hand are rarely caked in paint, damaged or otherwise undesirable.

Anyway, I've been chopping and changing the models I've received, and the 117th are starting to come together. Here's an example squad:

To fit in with the light infantry background, the squad's got a single flamer upgrade, and the 'Rip' (sergeant) is equipped with a shotgun and marked out with a cap.

The conversion work is pretty straightforward – replace the head with the Forgeworld Cadian respirator heads, and remove the chest-mounted rebreather (as it's redundant).

As a general rule, the ones with bare heads or without a rebreather keep their chest rebreather, but the Lamb's World regiments are supposed to be a fairly typical Guard regiment: if you lose something, tough! Lamb's World breeds its soldiers stoical, and the officers will overlook a few personal changes to kit (leaving off shoulder guards, 'acquired' targeters, personal trophies and the like), so there's a little breathing room for individualisation, something I think is very important to creating a believable 'in the field' feel to a Guard army.

    A typical Lamb's World legionnaire:

Lamb's World is my favourite little planet in the Antona Australis sector, as I've been collecting armies from there for over ten years. The regiments, like the world itself, are fairly 'normal' – there's no super-equipped elite regiment; no weird fighting style; and it doesn't have special access to Inquisitional/Astartes/Navy support. They rely on good old fashioned soldiering to get things done – and given my win record with them, they're not very good at it!

A 'Lief' (officer) and a pair of Rips.

Good stuff Apologist; I'm looking forward to crossing swords with some Lamb's Worlders again.

Any chance of some close-ups of the Lief please? Does he have a weird mutant head, or is it the light playing tricks?

Bugger – I've just taken some photos and forgot to get one. He might look odd because he's got a respirator on, but no helmet, and looking across his body? (this head)

Re: The PCRC presents: Rehab of 8 Addicts

    Lamb's World Light Infantry
A rainworld, whose main export is liquid water, the inhabitants of [Lamb's World] have altered over recent centuries from nomadic tribes to forming permanent dwellings. Three large cities are the Lamb's Worlder's happiest boast – the capital Myrffn, cosmopolitan Pant-y-Gyrdl and Little Haven.
The planet harbours a strong feral ork presence in and around the equatorial mountains and deserts; and the Imperium conducts regular firesweeps to control the swelling and dangerous population. Recent Imperial development means that the booming planetary infrastructure is making this considerably more achievable, and some projections see the ork tribes wiped from the planet within fifty years.
An extract from Perigrinations through the Lamba System, the Marquesa Zuzen Barabar's celebrated travel documentary; Ca.M38

Lamb's World regiments are traditionally drawn from PDF regiments that have served in the ongoing Equatorial Culls; a campaign that has continued intermittently against the stubborn Feral Orks of the region since records began. Never numerous and hemmed in by the rocky terrain, the ork tribes pose little true threat beyond the equatorial belt. The Culls, while dangerous, ensure the orks never reach critical mass. That said, they have proven intractable; popping up years or even decades after at least four Imperial Commanders have declared final victory and the extinction of the tribes.

The Marquesa's closing comments on the backwater agriworld were not entirely accurate, and while an extermination campaign saw some success in the closing years of M38, the orks have proved intractable and have seen resurgences over the intervening years as experienced PDF Regiments are sent to do their duty elsewhere in the sector; most notably in M40.333, when Little Haven was sacked.

Nevertheless, the agri-world's tithe is paid in water and blood – Lamb's World continues to provide stolid, if unremarkable, regiments to the Guard. The planet itself has developed since the Marquesa's journal, and while the principal cities still stand, many more have sprung up. The various ethnic groups of the inhabitants still bear hallmarks of their cultural histories, but their traditional nomadic ways have largely been subsumed into settled, urban living. Trade developments mean that the equipment and materiel used by the regiments seconded to the Guard are visually very different to regiments from the Marquesa's era.

Of course, these differences are more than cosmetic; but such is the monolithic nature of the Imperium's technological distribution, that the operation of the different patterns of flak armour and lasrifles issued to the current Lamb's World regiments are quickly assimilated by the obedient troops.

    Unknown Legionary

This iconic image, taken by an embedded Agitprop Propagandist during the Fang-Nood Incident, shows a young member of the 117th Vultures, a light infantry regiment deployed to Shale. Seizing a moment to reload his Kantrael-pattern lasrifle, the Legionary's gaze is caught by the Agitprop's holopict-capter.

Cycling the holo-pict, the Legionary's standard equipment is shown. Bearing Yoke-pattern combat webbing, the Legionary carries a knife (traditionally, these were made by the parents of the Legionary; but post M39, this romantic tradition was subsumed by the need for standardisation, and troopers now carry a Braun VI-pattern redact combat blade), grenades; and has numerous addenda-pouches. Those on the helmet are supposed to hold emergency short-lasclips, but are more commonly used to store lho-sticks.

The Kantrael-pattern lasrifle, produced locally under contract by the Forgeworld Braun VI and its satellite, Yoke, is standard issue for Lamb's World light infantry regiments, though owing to supply chain demands, replacement lasrifles are more likely to be the longer, stockier Mars-Alpha pattern common throughout the galaxy. Specialist equipment is precious, as Imperial Guard troop transports rarely pass the same way twice; so supply lines need to be continually updated.

Even relatively young regiments such as the Vultures will commonly have slightly mismatched equipment among the troops as attrition builds – or simply owing to a misstroke by an Administratum Minuteman. As such, the weaker or less canny infantryman can find himself burdened by miscast carapace plates, short on equipment such as webbing, socks or blankets, or carrying awkward, heavier Cadian plate. This rarely impacts on the infantryman's fighting ability, so such problems are commonly ignored or ridiculed by overburdened Quartermasters.

The helmet is a pattern known the galaxy over, with variants used by regiments from Cadia to Lastrati. Combat on Shale was eased by respirators, which were also used to dose the troops with a supplemented oxygen mix. The supplement was reputed to 'calm and cleanse' the troops for combat; though as the events of the Shale campaign bore out, this claim became more suspect.

The helmet shown here also incorporates flash-suppressor goggles. The troops were issued with contact lenses and petroleum jelly that helped to protect the mucous membranes of the eye from the atmosphere, but many legionaries found this awkward, and preferred to undertake their duties wearing the atmosphere-sealed helmet, even though it taxed respiration and led to repetitive strain injuries on the neck.

cheers Apologist, tried to stick to minimal colours. can't have elaborate patterns on generic clone troopers.
now I have to figure out how to transfer it to their vehicles!

I really like the cammo scheme on your guardsman. with those kind of patterns its always difficult to work out how to get them looking effective and realistic, but yours is spot on.

the elysian lasguns are really nice. I don't know what they've done to them, but they are just so much cooler than standard ones.

A year or two ago the PCRC fought a large Apocalypse battle to determine the fate of Bothusion Prime in the wake of a Tyranid invasion; a battle that the Imperials narrowly lost. Ever since then I've had a few ideas for plot hooks relating to Shale (the only other habitable planet in the system), so I'm pleased to get a chance to air them now.

It's going to be interesting to find out if Shale was ignored by the 'Nids due to low bio-mass or for some other reason...

Actually I've got some photos from Bad Day at Bothusion Prime (as the game was known) somewhere, I'll post a few later if I can find them.
