The Daemonettes attempt to confront the Dreadnought, but the Astartes pilot is immune to their titillations.

The remaining Nurgle Daemons secure the bunker complex…

…while the Daemon Prince continues to flee across the desert sands.

    Extraction Mission Alpha-1
    Tau vs. Imperial (Aeronautica Imperialis)

A Tau Orca and fighter escort approach a desert outpost to extract a forward Pathfinder team. The Imperial Starfire Skybears squadron move to intercept.

Tau escorts break formation to engage Imperial gunships.

With its path now (mostly) clear, the Orca begins its final approach.

    Tau Victory (Objective)

    Pirate Raids
    Tau vs. Orks (Aeronautica Imperialis)

Tau air patrols engage a previously undetected Ork presence on Shale.

The Ork raiders succeed in eliminating the Tau, but at the cost of all but one of their aircraft. This is believed to be an isolated raid.

    Aggressive Negotiations
Necron Dynasty of Hy’kos vs. Necron host of Kethla the Enduring (1000 points)

The Necron forces align at the perimeter of the Hy’kos tomb complex. Kethla, in his role as vassal for Anrakyr the Traveller, attempts to recruit the indigenous Necrons of Shale to their cause.

However the Necrons of Hy’kos are a fiercly independent dynasty and will not bow to the interlopers.

    Kethla’s host advances…

…but is hurled back by overwhelming Gauss and Tesla fire.

With the ranks of his infantry depleted…

    …Kethla calls for reinforcements.

Kethla performs a ‘tactical rearward advance’ to carry news of the ‘negotiations’ to Anrakyr, leaving his minions to cover his escape.

Better late than never. The Triarch Praetorians arrive to bolster the Hy’kos position, but the battle is already over.

    Liberation of Tortuger City
Lamb’s World 117th Imperial Guard vs. Necron Dynasty of Hy’kos (1000 points)

The Lamb’s Worlders come to the aid of the besieged citizens of the grandly named mining settlement ‘Tortuger City’.

The Triarch Stalker breaches the outer perimeter

The Phaeron leads his warriors from the front…

…while the Doom Scythe cruises overhead, vaporising Ogryns into fine ash with its death ray!

The Triarch Stalker continues its advance unhindered as the Guard are unable to bring enough heavy weapons to bear.

The Rough Riders move into position as the Leman Russ continues its bombardment…

…but it does little to slow the Necron advance.

Realising it’s all down to them to check the Stalker’s advance; the hardened veterans reach for their krak grenades and throw themselves at the towering war machine…

…but their puny attack has little effect.

The Rough Riders lead a brave counter-charge against the Phaeron, but the Cryptek’s lightning field devastates the unit, leaving the survivors easy prey to the bludgeoning blows of the Necrons.

The Necron advance continues, but in their haste to demonstrate their superiority in battle over the younger races, they fail to secure their objective…

…and fail to dislodge the Imperial Guard from theirs. Tortuger City holds. For now.

Hah, true. We don't really have and 'tread heads' in the PCRC, although a worrying amount of Necron vehicles are starting to appear...

In between all the games this weekend I managed to finish my Slaaneshi contingent...

...so I now have a fully painted 1000 points. Here's a full army shot.

And here's Graham collapsing in shock after realising he'd finally finished the highlights on a 1000 points of Tau Battlesuits.

    REPORTS FROM THE FRONT

    Incursion at Alopecia Outpost
Lamb’s World 117th Imperial Guard vs. Gatrog Nurgle’s Cavalcade of Decay (1000 points)

The Lamb’s Worlders move to investigate the mysterious temple that has pushed its way up through the sands of Alopecia Outpost.

Without warning a legion of daemons tear their way into reality amidst the Imperial Guard lines.

Luckily Imperial reinforcements are on hand to counter-attack.

The Rough Riders gallop into the plague daemons…

…while Ogryns wrestle with hideous tentacled Beasts of Nurgle.

The Daemonettes emerge from the warp far from their intended destination (much to the relief of the Guardsmen), drawn to the power of the shrine.

Gatrog Nurgle butchers his way through the hapless humans.

Rough Rider reinforcements arrive, but it’s too late for Rip-Sergeant Dresden’s squad. Dresden himself is the only survivor.

    Lewdfiend Slaanesh confronts Delivery Service.

The battle becomes a series of sprawling melees as more Plague Bearers join the fray.

A few Daemonettes reach the Guard lines through a storm of lasrifle fire, but there aren’t enough of them to be a serious threat.

Lewdfiend Slaanesh is banished by sheer weight of firepower.

The Colonel comes to the rescue of the Rough Riders, banishing Gatrog Nurgle with a mighty blow from his power fist. The horsemen in turn move to shield the wounded Colonel from the tide of approaching Nurglings with vengeance in their eyes.

Desperate close combat continues across the outpost.

The Nurglings gleefully overpower the Rough Riders and close in on the Colonel…

    REPORTS FROM THE FRONT

Classified Location, approximate 375 miles south west of First Dig
Lamb’s World 117th Imperial Guard vs. Tau Hunter Cadre Shas’ka Nan (1000 points)

Orbital telemetry has identified an isolated Imperial outpost of curious design. All the defences point inwards towards an underground complex. The Tau are moving to investigate…

Cadre Shas’Ka Nan sweep into the apparently deserted outpost…

…as the Lamb’s World 117th move to intercept.

A statue of a might Astartes hero stands in eternal vigilance, towering over the outpost’s defences.

Missile pods and railguns cover the Tau advance from the rear…

…while burst cannon and plasma rifle fire peppers the Imperial vanguard.

The instillation is soon in Tau hands.

A surprise cavalry counter attack sweeps in from the flank, catching a Tau Crisis team completely by surprise and wiping them out.

Tau Fire Warrior teams advance under mortar fire to secure the central bunker.

The Lamb’s World heavy armour rolls in…

…under fire from the Broadside team. The human crews expert use of cover prevents the Tau battlesuits landing a telling hit.

Long range mortar and battle cannon fire decimate the flanking Tau gun drone squadrons.

The Tau seek a vantage point atop the complex from which to target the Imperials.

The battle becomes a dual of long ranged fire power, with neither side willing to break cover of give ground.

The Imperial Guard finally succeed in driving the Tau survivors out of the complex and into the desert. Its secrets will remain undisturbed.

Hydroponics Facility Epsilon, approximately 50 miles north of First Dig
Dark Eldar Kabal of the Perfected Flesh vs Lamb’s World 117th Imperial Guard vs. (750 points)

A Dark Eldar raiding force swoops in across the hydroponics facility, catching the Imperial Guard defenders by surprise.

The Ogryns guarding the comms bastion shout a warning to their comrades, alerting them to the approaching Xenos.

The Raiders skim through a barrage of artillery fire, nimbly dodging the explosive ordnance.

A pack of warp beasts followed close behind the Raiders, howling under the whips of the Beastmasters and slavering at the sight of human flesh.

Dark Eldar warriors arrive at the comms bastion…

…while the Wracks and their Haemonculus master arrive at the opposite end of the defensive line…

…and quickly break the will of the defenders with a barrage of liquefier fire.

The defenders outside the bastion are quickly overwhelmed, but the Ogryns inside hold fast.

Re: The PCRC presents: Rehab of 8 Addicts

Thanks for posting all the reports, Bob_Hunk – the shots look great. Definitely shows off Graham and Sam's awesome terrain and boards

...and I can stop posting unpainted models, as I have completed over 1000pts. Woo! The original intent for this blog was for us all to complete 250pts a month, but I've been a bit slack. Luckily, the Jubilee weekend gave us all a great excuse to meet up, hang out, drink beer and paint, so most of us have now nearly caught up with the 1250pt target we set ourselves.

Here's Delivery Service all painted up, and neatly set amongst Graham's cool desert terrain.

I was dreading painting this tank, as I just can't get enthused about painting such large models, and on top of that, to get a good result on mechanical items requires a neatness of touch that I find a bit fussy. However, once I got stuck in, I really enjoyed it. The extra detail of the Forgeworld hull and turret, plus the extra little bits like the guy hitching a lift and the unfortunate cow give it a bit of character, I think.

    That unfortunate cow:

    Chap hitching a lift.

Rusty exhausts. Delivery Service obviously needs some replacement parts in his next visit to the Enginseers! The Imperium's armed forces are so superstitious about technology, I don't see the grunts performing anything but the most basic maintenance, and much of that is going to be following a very strict 'hymnbook' of guidelines. Luckily, Leman Russ Battle Tanks are almost preternaturally rugged, so I see them running well even though parts of them are all but dropping off.

Left to right: Cycloptic Necron of the Amaranthine Dynasty; Grigori, Haemonculus of the Perfected Flesh; Daemonic celebrant Marroseraph Ngdrassuf; Team Leader Kor'hui of the Brightsword Protectorate; Rubricised treacher-legionnaire of the Thousand Sons; Corpsman Llw of the 117th Lamb's World; and Acashverosh, congregant of Kethla the Enduring.

Missing from the pict-capture are a representative of the Vlka Fenryka. Rest assured this newsrag will continue to hunt images of the warriors to keep you informed!
...and now a bit of background. We've got a story building up for this campaign, so I hope you enjoy how it's developing.

As the events on Shale began to snowball – if you'll excuse such a phrase being used of a desert world – Piotr Prosion, one of my more promising protegés, unearthed some startling news. With hindsight, and had the information been brought to me before events overtook us, Brother-Captain Aurellian and I may have been able to avert the crisis. Alas, it was not to be.

For quite some time, the 1st army had been advancing towards the last known location of the Giga-rig in the southern Polar wastes. Progress had been hampered both by the weather conditions, and the emergence of more of the curious rock formations.

These clusters of rocks had been a feature of Shale since time immemorial, emerging and retreating over the course of a few decades. They were locally regarded as an unusual tectonic feature of the world, much like the static storms or dust seas. However, recent months had seen them begin to emerge more speedily, and with distressing (but mercifully indecipherable) scrawling etched upon them. Some had even begun displacing buildings.

Prosion had begun to investigate these changes, which had led him to the Polar Wastes, where he had liased with General Vim Vishacre of the 1st army. Under advisement from Inquisitorial contacts in the Ordo Malleus, I had my suspicions that the so-called Cavalcade of Decay – curses be laid upon that name – had something to do with the events, but the appearance of traitor Astartes of the Thousand Sons legion around the pylons took us all by surprise.

The fortunate intervention of Astartes of the Vlka Fenryka – Throne alone knows how they knew the location, as they were singularly uncommunicative – prevented the vanguard of the 1st army being completely wiped out in the subsequent retreat, but little could be gleaned of the Sons of Magnus' intentions. By the time a counter-attack could be mounted, the area was deserted, and the giga-rigs' location – and fate – was confirmed. Caught in the updraw was the shattered cap of a cyclopean obelisk.

Prosion's investigation suggested the obelisk had been submerged beneath the shifting sands some three hundred thousand years ago (as an aside I suspect this may have been a case of Prosion's imagination getting the better of his sense, as he certainly never offered any evidence beyond the most mundane carboreadings, and Necrontyr devices have proven... uncanny in their makeup). The giga-rig had sheared the obelisk nearly in two; with a cataclysmic release of energy that had reduced the rig to a guttering ghost-city.

Many years after the events of the campaign, and under heavy guard by Inquisitorial veterans of the Saturnine regiments overseen by a member of the Knights' phratry, I was allowed fettered access to the Grey Knights' records on Iapetus. My suspicions were confirmed. The obelisk had been a warp restricting device of near-unimaginable power, seemingly aimed at keeping the Cursus of Müaphien firmly shut.

Of course, at the time we had no idea the Cursus – the twin of the annular ring on distant Tallarn – was there at all. Such a device posed a threat to the Segmentum, let alone Antona Australis. That the giga-rig had delved too far, too greedily, was an object lesson to us all. The one thing preventing a holocaust of warp invasion had been broken, perhaps irreparably, and the Cursus was now essentially a closed – though stout – door, its sturdy lock destroyed through ignorance.

As soon as Prosion had – urgently, desperately – communicated his findings to me, I began to move more of my assets to the planet. I had a feeling the knowledge of the Ordo Xenos would soon be needed...

Re: The PCRC presents: Rehab of 8 Addicts

    Rough Riders
Horseback cavalry? Whoever thought that would work? attr. General Rubra Henimon, 3rd Army
Rough Riders get a lot of stick. The models are shonky, and lots of players can't see the appeal of horse-riding in the grim darkness of the far future, where tanks, jets and gribbly monsters hold sway.

For me, warriors on horseback are the ur-example of humanity utilising technology. Horses can fuel themselves on the go. They can pick their way across broken terrain. They require little to no support, and are virtually silent compared to the grumbling of motor engines. These qualities make them perfect scouts, outriders and reconnaissance troops.

While cavalry charges are all-but-useless in the modern age, by the superstitious darkness of the 41st Millennium, even basic rifles are beyond many species' capabilities. I have no doubt at all that horsemanship is a respected and life-saving skill on many planets – and besides, the weird disjunct between different technology levels is part of the appeal of the setting.

Sure, a spaceship can set a world alight, assuming the dwindling knowledge of how to make it do so is preserved... Mankind rose to its current position of horseback, and I'd like to think we'll take equids to the stars with us.

Anyway, enough pontificating, here's the juicy pic of the painted Rough Riders. I'm really pleased with how they've come out, and I think another five will join the army soon:

Just read through all 10 pages and didn't regret a single second spent. What an amazing gathering of armies! Love the constant presence of fluff, and the ongoing narrative. As well as the armies themselves, of course. Can't heap enough praise upon this log, this is just the kind of spirit I'm in the hobby for.

    Subbed, obviously.

    Cheers,
