The Kabal of the Shattered Mirror - Game 2 - Necrontyr Awakening

”This isn’t right,” spat Arianys petulantly.

“Thank you, dearest sister, I am aware of that,” replied Kuras is his most withering tone. She simply glared back at him. Ignoring the Succubus, Archon Kuras turned back to the circle of figures around him, his bodyguards and officers. “Yesterday there was a Mon’keigh settlement here. Now there is a ghost town. Ideas?”

Dracon Silkaro shrugged his shoulders. “I’d have said that they simply left, maybe warned by prognosticators. But,” he continued, “All of the buildings are damaged. And it looks like battle damage.”

“But who would annihilate or enslave an entire village?” Kuras asked, realising the irony of his own words. A rival Archon? Always a possibility. Then his comm-bead came to life. The voice of one of the scouting Razorwing pilots came through, high on adrenaline and drugs.

“Kyahaha! I’ve found the proble-,” The message immediately cut off and there was a simultaneous flash of green light on the horizon. Kuras’ head snapped around, his eyes wide. “That was gauss fire! Mount up, now! Splinter weapon users, load acid rounds!” he roared.

At last the age old enemy made themselves known. Flashes of green light gave way to hulking skeletal forms as they teleported up from ancient tombs miles beneath the surface where humans had innocently built their cities.

    The Necrontyr had arrived.

    Overview

Hello there! Today’s game is a 2000pt game with my Dark Eldar against Orlando’s new and improved Necrons. I have kept on top of the rumours, but overall, am not hugely aware of all the little bits and bobs that the Necrons will be throwing at me, so this should be interesting.

There will be two games. The first one is an annihilation mission in dawn of war.

BTW, I had an older camera today, and consequently the photos are not very good, poor cameraman not withstanding!

The Kabal of the Shattered Mirror

Archon Kuras – Djin Blade, Ghostplate, Blast Pistol, Clone Field, Combat Drugs, Haywire Grenades
Succubus Arianys – Agoniser, Haywire Grenades
4 Incubi – Klaivex, Venom w/ Splinter Cannon
5 Trueborn – Dracon w/ Venom Blade, 4 Blasters, Haywire and Plasma Grenades, Venom w/ SC
9 Blue Wyches – Agoniser, Blast Pistol, Shardnet, Haywire Grenades, Raider w/ Flickerfield
10 Red Wyches – Agoniser, Blast Pistol, Shardnet, 2 Hydra Gauntlets, Raider w/ Flickerfield
10 Blue Warriors – Venom Blade, Blaster, Splinter Cannon
10 Purple Warriors – Venom Blade, Blaster, Splinter Cannon
5 Red Warriors – Venom Blade, Blaster, Venom w/Splinter Cannon
3 Reavers – Venom Blade, Heat Lance
Razorwing – Flickerfields, Disintegrators, Splinter Cannon
    Ravager – Flickerfield
Talos – Liquefier Gun, Heat Lance

    Silver-Level Secondary Awakeners

Phaeron – Warscythe, Sempiternal Weave, Res Orb, Phase Shifter
    20 Warriors – Cryptek w/ lightning field
10 Warriors – Necron Lord w/ red orb
    10 Warriors
    6 Immortals
    Triarch Stalker
    Annihilation Barge
    Tomb Stalker
    Tomb Stalker
Destroyer Lord – Sempiternal Weave, Res Orb
    2 Destroyers – 1 Heavy Destroyer
3 Canoptek Wraiths – 2 Particle Casters, Whip Coils

    Deployment

The Phaeron joins the Warriors with the Crytpek in the forest on the left flank, while the immortals deploy in a ruin in the centre.

The Blue Wyches deploy in their Raider with the Succubus as far forward as they can in the centre. The combat drug roll is Painbringer, granting the ability to re-roll wounds in close combat.

    Necron Turn 1

Apart from the Tomb Stalkers buried beneath the ground, the Necron army moves on, the Barge and a squad of warriors joining the others behind the forest, as everything else moves on to support the Immortals in the centre.

Shooting is poor, and between night fight and flickerfields, the Raider is not damaged. The Wraiths ghost forwards.

    Dark Eldar Turn 1

Apart from the Warrior on foot, the Dark Eldar sweep on, the Talos, Bikes and Red Raider moving down the centre. The heavies move on the left, and the Venoms moving in formation appear on the far left.

The Blue Raider lands in the central building, the Succubus and Blue Wyches rushing to get at the Immortals.

Not a lot of shooting finds range this turn, but the Venoms put out a lot of hurt on the Wraiths, killing two and wounding the third, but the two injured ones stand right back up.

Then the Wyches hit the Immortals. Succubus Arianys , who has been nigh useless for the four games since I got her, finally finds her stride. With the re-roll to wound, she fells 5 Immortals herself, before the last is brought down. Despite the boring, painless opponents, they nonetheless gain power from the slaughter.

    Necron Turn 2

The turn starts poorly as a Tomb Stalker mishaps, destroying itself.

The Wraiths move into the central ruins, and rip the Dark Lance from the Blue Raider. The Annihilation Barge misses completely, but secondary arcs lick against the hull of the Red Raider, shaking it. The Destroyers fail spectacularly.

The Triarch Stalker kills three wyches with its dispersed heat ray. Using the twin-linking this provided, Warrior after Warrior pours fire into the Blue Wyches, until finally, even the Succubus falls.

    Dark Eldar Turn 2

The three Venoms turbo-boost around the right flank, as the damaged Raider lands in front of them to shield them from assault.

The Bikes and Talos move to the Wraiths, but the shooting is shrugged off. I meant to assault with the bikes, but forgot.

The Razorwing fires everything into the twenty-necron block, felling ten. They are unfortunate and fail their morale test despite the Phaeron’s presence, preventing any repairs from happening, but only move back three inches.

In the centre, the Red Wyches disembark and assault the Destroyers, who had previously lost one from the Ravager, killing them all except for the Lord.

    Necron Turn 3

The Phaeron rallies his unit, stunning the Red Raider. The other Warrior units immobilise the Blue Raider.

The Annihilation Barge destroys the Ravager, arcs of energy dissipating into the ground. The Canoptek Wraiths destroy the bikes easily.

The Triarch Stalker charges into the Wyches, who kill the Destroyer Lord before surrounding the walker.

    Dark Eldar Turn 3

One Squad of Dark Eldar Warriors move on, killing the Wraiths in a hail of splinter fire. It’s chosen target dead, the Talos moves towards the enemy lines.

Bereft of its missiles, the Razorwing kills only a single warrior who stands back up.

The three Venom move in, showering a Warrior squad in splinter rounds, and due to poor saves, wipe out the full ten Necrons.

The Wyches and Triarch Stalker engage in a futile contest where the Wyches can’t hit and the Stalker can’t kill.

    Necron Turn 4

The Tomb Stalker erupts from the ground in the central building.

The Annihilation Barge badly damages the Red Raider badly, but cannot make a kill. The remaining Necron Warriors fail to make a mark.

The Phaeron leaves the forest, his Warriors stunning the Razorwing and blowing its cannon off. They assault it, but cannot touch it after its high movement. The Triarch Stalker rips two Wyches apart.

    Dark Eldar Turn 4

The Trueborn debus near the Tomb Stalker and with the Venom, score two wounds on it. The Talos piles into it, but loses a wound for no return. The Tomb Stalker uses hit and run to break away.

The other Venoms kill five warriors, causing the rest to flee off the board with the Lord. The Wyches lose a member, but Immobilize the Triarch Stalker.

The Phaeron and Warriors destroy the Razorwing in close combat.

    Necron Turn 5

The Phaeron leads the Warriors back across the board, but are –still- unable to finish the Red Raider. In A massive arc, the Tesla Destructor hits two Venoms, the Trueborn and the Triarch Stalker, causing minor damage to the Dark Eldar units.

The massive Tomb Stalker is only able to account for a single Trueborn in assault, and the Triarch Stalker kills another Wych.

    Dark Eldar Turn 5

The Venoms continue their long journey, killing five warriors, three of which stand up.

The Wyches and Triarch do nothing to each other.

The Talos barrels into the Tomb Stalker again, this time killing it.

    There is no turn 6.

    Dark Eldar win!

    Thoughts

Well, that didn’t go well for the ‘Crons. My Archon and his Incubi never even had to touch the ground…

In fairness, a lot of that was bad luck on part of my opponent. He failed multiple Ld10 tests, and lost a Tomb Stalker to a mishap. It also seems that the Dark Eldar aren’t too bothered by Necron anti-tank. Auto glance? We’re AV10 anyway. AP-? Negates our open-topped. Dark Eldar may simply be a bad match up.

At this point, I’m finding it hard to see the ‘Cron’s killer edge. Maybe that’ll become clearer with time.

I’ll upload the second game in a day or two.

Archon Kuras stepped onto the ground as the remaining Necron forces phase out. He was mildly disappointed not to get some exercise, but the painless machines were dull opponents indeed. He turned to Malathys, his Klaivex.

“This place was our kill, and the Necrontyr took it from us. We will repay that debt. We will retreat and re-arm and take…a present from them. Necrontyr tech can fetch a good price.”

The Wyches were recovering their lost from the ruins behind them, and he could hear a familiar voice bellowing orders. Kuras didn’t bother to turn around.

“Are you alright, dearest sister? Do you require aid?”

He was answered by a violent curse. He smiled, and made for his transport.

Nice to know the new crons arent too good
    lol
Lord Vect , he said "more". They increased countlessly. He then whispered into the mortals ears "MORE". The helpless people, turned to snakes forced to bring more or else.Victims were brought. Vect turned them into snakes hunting for more. Within a few hours, all was left was snakes and Vect. The SupremeLord went to another island showing no mercy nor understanding. To show this, he made the snakes into knives that were disguised as berries. He made all the supply in the village berries

    Good write up.

One rule I got wrong was the wraiths; they do not have RP and so cannot get up.

Makes an orb with a Destroyer Lord a poor use of 30 points.

Still early days with an new codex and my Necrons are footslogging.

Honestly, that Necron list is missing pretty much all of the "auto-includes" for anti-tank. Eldritch Lance Crypteks, Annihilation Barges, Scarabs.

It looks like an army from the previous codex, with tomb stalkers. (I'm pretty sure it is.)

So, don't use it as an inclination of the current codex's capabilities.

You are of course right; I only use fully painted models; got a barge done in an evening.
I am working on a few models to use as cryptechs.

Lightening field is useful vs DE since they really want to assault.

Thinking about two overlords and two Royal Courts; can extend the use of the crypttechs.

Woundering if the Lord option list is a botched cut & paste; same costs as a overlord for a one wound model???

He may be a 1 wound model, but he is our 'sergeant', so he could have anywhere from 5-15 ablative wounds in a warriors/immortals squad.

So, the same costs makes sense to me.
