Barbarians from the Mountains of Mourn

I decided I would start a separate plog for my "count as ogres" barbarians. They were the original inhabitants of the Mountain of Mourn together with the Sky Titans. Most were wiped out soon after the Ogres arrived. However, a few tribes managed to adapt by copying Ogre warfare. The infantry will be made of cave bear riders and I'm planning to include a range of prehistoric animals.

This is the test mini for the colour scheme. I've repainted and rebased this guy so many times that I'm surprised there's any detail left. I finally found a colour scheme with which I'm happy.

The same guy surrounded by a bunch of buddies at various levels of completion form half sculpted to half painted.

A WIP mammoth (counts as Thundertusk). I'm reasonably pleased with how he turned out but would welcome suggestions on what to add/change. However, I intentionally avoided Chaos bits and chains as I don't want him to look chaosy.

That is some impressive greenstuff work mate - I wasn't sure what was going on with the Mammoths eye in the first pic, but the second shows off that armoured cap a lot better.

I don't think you need to add too much more to it to be honest, maybe a few more shields but I like the simplicity of it.

Awesome mammoth. The only thing I'd add is paint.

Re: Barbarians from the Mountains of Mourn

    Hi guys,

Thanks a lot for the fast and positive feedback.

@mdiscala - the bears allowed me to practice my greestuffing. It's also a bit easier to sculpt such a big piece.

@JackDaw - I agree it's probably best to keep the mini simple. I thought about shields but don't really see where to put them. The face plate around the eyes is also my least preferred bit; it's a bit oversized. But as you know, there's no second chance with green stuff.

    @Student - paint and a crew!

There has just been a ray of sun here and I took a few better pictures. I also added two straps on the trunk (visible on the first pic).

I reckon just one extra shield on the hanging armour plates would do it mate, just below the middle noose. It'd help to break those sections up a little

@ Jackdaw - thanks for the suggestion. Is thid what you had in mind?

I also tried with two shields.

I'm not sure which option I like better.

BTW, I resculpted the face plate around the eyes. I managed to keep the damage to a minimum, and I'm pleased I changed it.

Spot on mate - I reckon the single shield looks better, it doesnt clutter that section up.

This is a fantastic counts as idea. I wish I had thought of it! I hope you decide to model some leadbelchers as I would love to see your take on them!

First off, like the new paint scheme on bear rider. To me the fur just looks a little better *maybe because it feels less Red and more brown*. I think the blue shield was also a right move as it moves the color in a different direction. The tattoos still look good too.

Now the mammoth. I like it. You got the carriage balanced very well on it and the model has just a good vibe in appearance. The greenstuff armor helps alot too. I am guessing for its range stone thrower like attack it reaches up, takes a barrel, and throws it.

My one thought is though, how will the Driver control it? I am guessing when you add the driver you will handle that but I am curious which route you will go.

Well I suppose some crew might be useful. That armour around the eye is better than the first go. I look forward to seeing the crew.

I was doing a tl:dr and thought "what big eyelids"....Looks much more like leather armor now...

Did you really sculpt all the bears?

Re: Barbarians from the Mountains of Mourn

I made some good progress today. Within a couple of hours I've nearly finished a new unit. I should add that it is a one mini unit and that it won't add many points. Anyway, here's my first WIP sabre tooth tiger. It was my first attempt at using the new liquid green stuff from GW, which I found interesting. In particular, I discovered it allows adding very fine texture on smooth surfaces, which was nice for this mini. Anyway, C&C welcome as always.

@JackDaw - thanks again for the suggestion, I agree the single shield version looks better.

@Kirth - thanks a lot. I don't claim copyright on the concept and please feel free to do something along similar lines if you feel like it. I would be interested in comparing our takes on some units. Besides, we need more men to cleanse the Mourn Mountains form the Ogres invaders and reclaim the land that is rightfully ours. I've considering different concepts for the leadbelchers but haven’t made up my mind; they are one of the last units I'll deal with. BTW, I had a look at your 40k armies. I really love them, in particular the Cilix infantry regiment. This is really the type of unique and fluffy army I'd like to build myself if I ever play 40k.

    @Grain Weevil - thanks

@EnternalVoid - thanks for your comments. I didn't add the barrels for that reason even if your idea is excellent and after reading your post I wondered whether I couldn't add some chains or ropes between the tusks and put barrels on it. However, I enjoyed building this mammoth and I now want to build a second one. I may use this one as the Thundertusk with a bigger howdah with some stone thrower on top (if anyone has a grudge thrower at hand, I'd be grateful if they could let me know about its exact dimensions). I could then use this howdah for the new more heavily armoured mammoth that would count as a Thundertusk.

@Student - thanks, I hadn't fully realised myself how ugly the eyeguard was. I realised something was wrong but just wanted to move on with it. Getting critical feedback on such problems is really a big plus of posting WIP minis on Warseer.

@Maskedman5oh4 - I agree, as I said above I hadn't realised how bad the eyeguard was. I'm very happy I changed it eventually.

Re: Barbarians from the Mountains of Mourn

I've done another two bears like the ones I've shown before, and then I went for a bigger (more polar looking) bear that was meant to be the mount of a character. There are still a few things to do on him like adding teeth, fixing the claws and getting rid of some fingerprints (I spotted on the photos).

I'm pleased how he turned out. I spent far more time on him and I think it shows. The downside is that I now dislike the previous ones. I'm afraid I may have to go back to the drawing board, sculpt another three or four with the new improved design and try to cast them. C&C welcome as always.

Its good to see some one putting so much effort into each model. With so many fully sculpted models this log is full of originality. Keep up the good work.

Ah the pains of improving your skills. I had that problem a few times with the later projects making the older ones look bad *Luckly it mostly converted stuff rather than ones made from ground up*.

Well if you have any question about molds I might be able to help.

Perhaps on the older ones you could mix them with some of the new ones and hide them in second ranks and such.

That all said I can't wait to see your take on the leadbelchers and maybe a magic user.

    Awesome Mammoth!

It's what GW should have done with the model, not that cartoon thing they produced.
