And I have to say it's far better than the vampires in Oblivion. Haven't come across any Dragons yet Do I have to start up first, I'm level 6 edging into level 7 so shouldn't I have encountered yet??

If you've met the companions, then you should have the opportunity to have your first plot-related dragon battle (I suspect that the random dragon encounters won't start appearing until after the first battle).

    Edit -

Hmm seems blood dragons are the chomp insta kill type that was mentioned earlier.
The one that did it to me (multiple times...) was the second plot-line dragon that you kill.

@ Eumerin: Ahh thanks, I've actually been putting off that quest as it seemed boring, not any more

Finished the dark brotherhood quests :-) moving object to the companions and getting my char geared up in armor instead of leather pj's :-)

On a sad note my housecarl finally died on the last mission. Was with me from 3 to 16. Actually felt quite miffed when she died.

The gist seems to be that things have declined somewhat, and the continent isn't quite as orderly and the various regions aren't quite as willing to go along with the status quo.
It appears that the current status of the Empire is this -

The High Elves have successfully revolted, and they've taken control of the homes of the Wood Elves and the Khajit (cat people). The latter two are essentially treated as indentured servants.

The Argonians of Black Marsh have successfully revolted. More on them in a moment.

Morrowind, home of the Dark Elves, is in bad shape. The floating city of Vivec has fallen (possibly due to the actions of the PC in the third game...), and the volcano at Red Mountain has finally blown its top. The two disasters have devastated the province. And then the Argonians invaded.

Cyrodil is still the capitol of the Empire. It still controls High Rock and Skyrim, but the latter is in the middle of a civil war. Presumably it also still controls whatever portions of Morrowind haven't yet been overrun by the lizardmen.

Hammerfell is apparently independent, though I don't know anything more than that. But Hammerfell had always been more autonomous than the other provinces due to what happened in the game Redguard (the Empire's initial invasion successfully took control of the province, but the Redguards managed to liberate themselves; as a result, the Empire took a more diplomatic approach and successfully negotiated a treaty that brought the Redguards into the Empire).

    So...

Imperials - Still controlling what's left of the Empire
Nords - Still under the control of the Empire; engaged in a civil war between seperatists and loyalists
Bretons - Still under the control of the Empire
    Hammerfell - Apparently independent
High Elves - Building their own empire
Wood Elves - Enslaved by the High Elves
Dark Elves - In very bad shape; likely to soon be under the control of the Argonians - In the process of conquering the Dark Elves
Khajit - Enslaved by the High Elves
    Orcs - Still don't have a homeland

Am currently in the process of creating Logen Ninefingers, but with my Werewolf status as a substitute for the Bloody-Nine persona. Yes, this involves a lot of 2-handed skills and knives (can never have too many knives.) Oh, and sneak-skill. Say one thing about my Nord, say he can cut a throat or two.

Lydia is still with me, at lvl 31... But I tend to have Daedric backup running around as well as her.

    I got married to Aela.

She's... Remarkably domestic for a wild Werewolf lady who wants to spend eternity in a Daedric's lair hunting sheep.

argh this post really made me wanna know more about the background as a whole, they only way to do it i guess is to either read like a nutter or play the other games.

I'm yet to find a site that digests its nicely with medium detail. The wikis just obv have everything so you can get lost in detail .

Lydia died once with me, fighting bravely against three drugar in a cave. I actually think I might have accidently killed her with a shout...Needless to say I booted up my latest save, and started the cave again, and she's stayed alive and well ever since.

I've got a bit of a soft spot for my Lydia

Well, go for it! Arena & Daggerfall are free these days, but they have not aged incredibly well. My advice is to go with Morrowind, which can be found incredibly cheap these days (get the game of the year edition).

I have yet to take on a companion (have the whiterun housecarl but I leave her at breezehome). So far, the companion AI is still too incompetent to take around. Poor melbourne didn't make it out of the dungeon, and he wasn't even a companion lol

    Re: Elder Scrolls: Skyrim

Thats disapointing I was hoping they where at least as competent as the ones from fallout 3.

I think some of the disapointment is due to it having to run on a 5 year old platform
    *cough xbox*

Think is it had been desiged to run on high end pc's instead.

I haven't had too many problems with it personally, except when I jump off ledges when there isn't a physical path. Then it gets a little iffy. We still meet up eventually, though.

I currently have an ice witch following me around who I picked up in a tower near Riften, after I helped her destroy the coven she was part of. With nothing better to do, she agreed to come along. She has been rather helpful so far, both in combat and as a pack mule. The only thing that makes me leery about her is her tendency to leave ice spikes in very uncomfortable places (just on the enemies so far).

That'll be quite a surprise for your character to wake up to....
