Iron Warriors 5th Grand Company - to mark 10 year collecting, Now with Chaos Guards

    Iron Warriors 5th Grand Company
This is where we hold them! This is where we fight! This is where they DIE!!!!!!!!!!
    Hi everone

Though I get a project log going on my Iron Warriors on these fourms. This will be marking 10 year of collecting Iron Warriors (17th Nov being the date I started them back in 2001).

I've alway been a big fan of Chaos Marines thanks to John Blanch art work from WD 202/2nd Ed Codex Chaos & have been battle with Chaos for 15 year now. From my second army in 40k being Black Legion, to my Iron Warriors & my Chaos Daemon in 2008.

For the Iron Warriors it all started when 3rd ed came out. One of my friends converted up some really nice Obliterators for his Thasound Son army, before we had the current models we have today. Also gaming wise Obliterators where complete diffrent from the way they are today & your able to take up to 6 in a single unit.
Also back then, Index Astarties where being release in the White Dwarf, given us a wealth of background into some of the famous Chaos Legions & Space Marine Chapter, even with some rules to field these armies. Like White Scar make great use of bikes, but not allow them some other chose with in codex Space Marines. The Index Astartirs also had a lot of cool art work inside as well, for me I really like the art work base on the Iron Warriors.

Since then my Iron Warriors have been battle it out against many oppents, fought in many tournaments & winning some honour from a few player chose award for best army

I though the best way to mark ten year of collecting Iron Warriors would be, to start a brand new army, well my 6th Iron Warrior force. Few of the reason is down to, I'll need to move from the old GW Inks to the current wash which are brillaint (Badab Black wash is the future!!) & also Games Workshop release a lot of cool kits over the years to further convert models which I really enjoy doing, it rare if any that I have out of the box armies, everthing got a conversion in some shape or fourm.
Chaos Marines offer a lot in term of being one of the most convertible (sp) armies out there in the 40k world along with Orks.

With the Iron Warriors I am aim to have the army ready for the Throne of Skulls April tournament down in Warhammer World. Like my IW, ToS April going to mark ten years of attending tournaments as Conflict Scotland 2001 was around April time.

First Iron Squad - Iupatus Proeliator

My test model before starting project - Iron

I've also been trying out the Eavy Metal Medium on stubble. During ToS I ask Nick Bayton (GW Hobby, now events) how he done his which was - Chaos Black, Codex Grey & Scorched Brown.
While I was suggested the Medium when it was shown in the current WD by friend

The Autocannon arm Iron Warriors - Back Pack

I'll be useing the Yellow & Black Hazer strip as spot colour in my Iron Warriors force.

Re: Iron Warriors 5th Grand Company - to mark 10 year collecting

    Damn you four photo limit

A lot of stuff will be play a big role in term of give me idea from - John Blanch art work shown there. Graham McNeill Iron Warriors novels. Bloodquest comic Black Library use to do base on a Exile Blood Angels Captain in his quest in the Eye of Terror to claim a relic. Wade or know as Teethgrinder on these fourm (Games Workshop staff memeber) Khorne Bezerker army. Christian Byrne Black Legion. Andy Chamber Iron Warriors from 2nd ed era.
Codex Chaos Space Marine 2nd ed & 3.5. As well as a lot of conversion work George Dellapina done back when he had his models in the WD.

I've roughly base my IW Marine arm with Melta on Cadaras art work from the Black Library web site, from Graham McNeill limited ed novel "Iron Warrior"

I've just got two models left to finish the first unit off being my Chaos Champion & the Icon Bearer

I'll be adding Servo skulls though out the army. The head is from the Raven Guard Forge World Captain. It not glue onto the model, this is due to taken off another model from a project I'll no longer be doing.

Finial little preview into my Second squad

When ever I start a army, I alway like to get my 2x Troops & HQ built & painted first. That way I got my legal force. Also give me that time to make any change to my planned army list.
Just the last thing you want to do is buy say a unit of Assault Terminators, start them first & ended up not need them any more in your army.

    That it for now.

This is a great looking army! I mean, you can never go wrong with a minigun.
IWs are easily in my top three legions, so always happy to see more of these guys.

Re: Iron Warriors 5th Grand Company - to mark 10 year collecting

    Thanks for the comments

    Just a quick update

As said I've collect Iron Warriors for just over ten year now. As such they fought in many battles (to count from 2004 up current they fought in 590 games, only ever keep count on my Favrout armies). I'll be adding trophies base on armies I enjoy battle over those ten years from past to present & here one base on a Black Legion

I though I would do the Chaos Star as a spot colour & hopeful to just be enough to draw people attesion.

So though out this army, exspect lot of trophies & with a story being it. It like my Space Wolves, each model has there own saga thanks to the games though fought in over the past year in the tournaments.

Also a little preview into some Obliterators I am trying out. I really like the current Obliterators models, but just carry the metal models + all the stuff I need when going to a tournament. Also just wanted to try this out with the Chaos Terminators.

I'm hope to go a bit further with future conversion. Just wanted to test out some idea on this model for future Obliterators.

So right now my first Iron Warrior squad nearly complete. Current trying to build my Rhino for this first unit & also make a start onto the second unit.

    Rhino so far

Yes I like to paint the inside of my tanks. Just some great detail & just look cool be honsty.

So that it for now. Aim to try get a update during the weekend, as aim to get a bit done painting wise on my second squad.

Also I think one of my friends has lay a hobby challenge down to paint a 1500pts Necron force in a single day during the Christmas holidays. Money premitting, if it gose ahead, I'll try get a log on the go for this.

Re: Iron Warriors 5th Grand Company - to mark 10 year collecting

Back to where it all began eh IP ... looking good can't believe its been 10 years, my own Chaos force in its first incarnation (IW/NL) is 15 years old this year. Still got a stack of spare CSM's and and a new termi lord ready for the Legions codex.

I'm with you on the Heresy look rather than the usual horns and spikes of Chaos. As the books are showing a lot of what we came to know as 'Undivided' Legions aren't massively Chaosy. Any plans for Dark Mechanicus elements to the army? I've been thinking about a few Apoc sized units for my own IW themed on them rather than the regular silver Baneblade with hazard stripes.

Devlan mud over badab black is much more grungy on IW IMO

May I recommend the 'Bulky Cyborgs' from bitspludio.com for Termi bionics, I bought a set of these with enough bits for two full models but easily enough bionics for a full Termi squad very Iron Warriory

    Iron within Brother F ...

Quite nice paintjobs and decent conversions you have there. Very likeable models, hope to see more soon and wish you good luck for the future of your Grand Company. Iron Within, Iron Without!

Aye I can't belive it been that long collect IW, for my first tournament - Conflict Scotland. Still have my old Metal Chaos Dreadnoughts which I will aim to build that some stage. While everone may not be a big fan I think it alright the old 2nd ed metal dreadnought.

Same will happen, in term I am going to bring back a lot of stuff in this new IW force that was included though the years like Sorcerer (hope there great in the new codex & we pick our power like Space Wolves, Blood Angels & Marines)

I'm with you on the Heresy look rather than the usual horns and spikes of Chaos
For some reason I've alway hated the horn look to Chaos Marines. I peffer the spiky look to them. In my view the spike make for better weapon, when your Bolter ran out of ammo & your close combat weapon is lost. Spiky helmet or for exsample the spike on the shoulder pads make for a great weapon.

Any plans for Dark Mechanicus elements to the army? I've been thinking about a few Apoc sized units for my own IW themed on them rather than the regular silver Baneblade with hazard stripes.
Not right now. Aim to get my Iron Warriors to 1500pts, then to get element for my 1750pts list.
After that I'll hold off, as apprently rumour are floating around on a new codex.
Though one thing I would like to do is a new version of my Chaos Daemon army be honsty. Might do some sort of tech feel to it. Be nice have a Bloodletter with some sort of Daemonic Bionics.

That & I am current replace stuff in my Daemon army. Trying to get ride of the Metal model elements due to the weight of carry that army & just getting annoyed with the Metal Bloodcrusher breaking/chipping.
So I am temp by a new Daemon force, but we'll see. Focuse is to get the Iron Warriors ready for gaming as soon as possible.

Going to get a update later on tonight. Currently just finish off a few models & waiting on a servo skull to dry.
Also going to re-work some parts on the Rhino I shown before I get this built & hopeful get that crusifed Black Templar on the front armour hull as my tradmark. It became well know in tournament when people are trying to find out my army, they alway look for the cursifed Space Marine.

Re: Iron Warriors 5th Grand Company - to mark 10 year collecting

    Update time

Just finish off the Champion & two Iron Warrior Chaos Marines. The Champion I wanted to try get the servo skull onto the base. I converted up a lot of Servo Skulls on my Mk5 army, all from undead skulls & Scout Sniper, so would like to keep this going with my IW. I see them floating around the battle feild, give my Iron Warriors that vital information during there seige warfare.

While the two Iron Warrior Chaos Marines, I wanted to get some of GW water effect onto there base see how it all look

1st Iron squad - Iupatus Proeliator

Just a few bits of detail to finish off.

Re: Iron Warriors 5th Grand Company - to mark 10 year collecting

Now onto the 2nd Iron Squad - Be Graphicus

I wanted to try some yellow & black strip on the T face plate so that each Iron Warrior will stand apart as there own anti hero's.

Two IW in the wash stage. I give the models a basecoat of Boltgun metal, then wash with Badab Black, then purple wash, the more Badab Black before being drybrush with boltgun metal

I just built this Iron Warrior Marine a few hour ago

With the Skull, I done this again on my Mk5 army. Again it just added to that tech theme, about Iron Warriors getting that tactical data during a battle/siege warfare. This was orignaly inspired by a bit of Art work, I belive it was a Dev drawing on a Techmarine taken back during the rumour leding up to the 4th ed Space Marine codex with Traits, it was on this fourm - warseer that much is all I can rememeber from a few year back

Re: Iron Warriors 5th Grand Company - to mark 10 year collecting

    Update time

The Iron Warrior with the Servo skull/scanner thing has now been fully painted

Right now he the only memeber of 2nd Iron Squad - Be Graphicus, as there was a hobby challenge over on Bolter & Chainswords, in the Chaos area by Brother Nihm to get a single Chaos Space Marine painted over the past few days & have them all finish for today.

I'm trying out some glow effect on my Iron Warriors. Due to the tubes being red on my models, I was unsure what to do with the eye lence (sp) of the helmets. But have chosen to go with blue

Hope this turn out alright. Once the model is varnish, I'll be getting some gloss varnish on any glass area of the models.

Three more Iron Warriors just built a few moment ago for 2nd Iron Squad - Be Graphicus

Hope to get these three Iron Warriors painted in my local GW tomorrow moring/afternoon.

    My IW army right now

As seen in the Photo, I now have my Rhino built. I'll be aim to spend the weekend getting the plasticard extra armour built & also get a Iron Warrior icon made from plasticard for the Rhino hatch.
After this, think I'll also get the second IW unit, there Rhino built & to get my Warsmith Abhorred Riddick built. I've also got enough bits now to start work on my first Terminator unit, got a lot of trophies (thanks to friends that look out those parts) to show them as the Champion/chosen of my Iron Warrior Grand Company who are worthy of wear Terminator armour.

    So that it for now.

Great looking army! IW seem to be popular these days, which can't be a bad thing. As for the eyes, I'd suggest red instead of blue, as blue looks too nice for Chaos. I don't think it will clash with the cables, rather complement them. If you're still worried about the cables, do orange eyes.

    Keep it up,
    BTB

I like the blue eyes, but I go green for my IW The chevrons on the face plate are very cool.

    Thanks

Good to see people like the blue glow effect on the eyes. Once I get some of the GW turft grass on Sat, I'll be able to finish the models I current have, basicly just getting varnish on them.

Since the post. The Three Iron Warrior chaos marines have been painted, but still need to be finish off.
Mail order been place for the 2nd Iron Squad Champion so he'll not be getting done until next week.

Also currently working on a unit of Terminators & hopeful get some work done on my Warsmith (Daemon Prince) soon.

Try get next update on Fri.

Re: Iron Warriors 5th Grand Company - to mark 10 year collecting

    Update

While I shown photos of WIP painting models, I never really shown WIP models being built/before undercaot hit them.

Been working on my Terminators (one of two squads that will be in the army) during the lunch hours yesterday there

    Squad 7: Tormentia

I've use the helmets from the Bodyguard kit from Forge World for the Red Scorpian Librarian. I bought the Librarian last year for my Blood Angels force & because how cool he was. Oringaly I was save these bits for my future Black Templar army (new codex permit). But they just look really cool, just need to take ot the Red Scorpain icon from the helmets.

While the Mace head come from Arch-confessor Kyrinov from the Sister of Battle range (HQ area).

Since this photo was taken. The models have now been base & just undercaoted a few moment ago.

Re: Iron Warriors 5th Grand Company - to mark 10 year collecting

    Update

I've spent today in my local GW just trying to get some time & tidy up my first of the two Terminator unit in my army. Still got a fair bit to go until the unit is finish but here what I have so far

    Then some recently buys today

GW Turft Grass - Now I can finish both squads with the base. Alway get the static grass on the base, then varnish to help seal in any flock/grass. I look forward to trying out the Truft grass to add a bit more to my Iron Warriors force.

Blister - This is Bile backpack, ether going to try this out on the second Iron Warrior squad Champion or I might possible try useing bits from it on a Obliterator.

Abaddon finecast - Trophies going to be use on the 2nd IW unit Champion & other parts will be use on my Obliterators.

So right now I am planning on finish my second Rhino, get the inside painted & then get that all built. Tomorrow try get the conversion for my 2nd IW squad Champion done.
Like wise I have a Chaos Terminator lord box I bought a week ago? so I'll be trying another idea out for my Obliterators as I am unsure on my orignaly conversion I shown a while back.

Then this week try get some bits for my second Terminator unit & for more Obliterators. I'll also need to think about model some Object Marker soon as well. Then Christmas time, I will have my last squad of Chaos Marine along with there Rhino, these will have a Bezerker theme, but there not Khorne Bezerker, just IW who really like close combat, so just work out some idea in my head right now to make them stand out a little from the other two IW units.

The Red Scorpain Honour Guards + Librarian is a really nice kit & I would recommend these models. Librarian really nice model to paint, while the honour guards come with a lot of great bits as well.
I'll be useing some of the power armour for my Uriel conversion for my Ultramarines.
